It is being manipulated by the ADs. A random consumer walks into an AD would be told he needs to be in the waiting list that might even be over 10years. But there are people who know the staffs in the AD, getting their orders met within weeks or months! Heck, a friend gets calls from them every month offering the sports models and Datejust! So, consumers like me are disgusted with these manipulation and switched to other brands.

A sales associate at a Rolex boutique (Mayors owned) recently told me that now “the list” is centralized and controlled by Rolex. According to him they put you on the list, and Rolex decides allocation, and will send your watch specifically to your AD. He also mentioned that per Rolex policy you have 2 days to pick it up once informed of arrival, if not they can sell to anyone. I imagine they’re doing this now to reduce the game playing reported from ADs.

I love Rolex. It was my first high end time piece I ever bought. The fact that you can’t walk into any AD and purchase a Submariner completely turns me off. It’s not like the AD’s aren’t getting watches. It’s that they are selling all their watches off to Greys who double the price and rip us off. I wandered into the JLC boutique in BH’s a couple of weeks ago and ended up buying a Reverso tribute duoface calendar. One of their most popular watches. The experience was every bit as good as Rolex. I pass by my local Rolex store on a weekly basis and to see the bare display cases just makes me shake my head and look elsewhere. And that is exactly what I did.

The reason I started getting into watches was because it felt tangible. It has the potential to last decades and be passed on to new generations. Do I NEED a watch? No, not really when I have a smart phone in my pocket. It might not be as accurate as a smart watch or phone, but I would rather have a mechanical watch over a smart watch anyday because it gives a sense of feeling real and in the moment. It feels permanent and honestly it just feels good having a nice watch.

I love that this video is posted today, I went to the Scottsdale fashion Center today. I was looking at the Tudor watches.(their booth is right next to Rolex store) and I overheard a conversation between and AD and a Russian with a thick accent. I ease dropped on their whole conversation after I heard the authorized dealer tell the man that he needed to buy some less desirable watches to earn favor with their location if he ever wanted to get a sub mariner, and get on their “exclusive” wait list. Not only did the man say no, but proceeded to chew the sales person’s ass out. I have definitely lost a lot of respect for the Rolex brand.

Hate to break it to you but if you have no purchase history with the AD, you have absolutely zero chance of buying the watch when there are thousands of customers who have spent thousands before and will be ahead of you. I’ve bought four Rolex’s in my lifetime, one for myself, two for an ex wife and one for a serious girlfriend that didn’t work out…recently I’ve contemplated buying another Rolex for myself but had no idea about the “List” until watching vids like yours on KZbin…I recently visited a Rolex dealer just to experience this in person and the feeling I left with was, well I’m not a big enough customer to probably have a chance to get the watch I’d like…turned me off completely as it sounded like I’d be forced to buy whatever watch they threw at me next to be able to maybe buy the one I want some time in the future…rather than play such games I’m looking at brands like Glashutte Original, IWC, Zenith and Cartier to name a few who would seem happy to serve a small customer like myself…Rolex can take their watches and…well you know…🤣

The problem with Rolex is not having to wait (something perfectly reasonable), it is not knowing how long will you have to wait and if you are ever going to get the watch. Rolex are not innocent. They know full well what happens at dealerships and there are many ways they could intervene but they don't. Equally,if people are going to be stupid enough to indulge the outrageous dealer actions then they get what they deserve. The consumer is always in charge. Walk away and take your business to someone who actually wants to sell you a watch. If people did this en masse the practices would stop overnight.

@@periscope7731 You are incorrect. Cartier designs and makes many of their own movements in house, including the REF 1840MC/1847MC, as featured in the Santos. The movements are artistically decorated, which is in contrast to Rolex, who do not feature display-backs on their models, as Rolexes are machine-finished. Furthermore, even in older models, Cartier featured the Frederic Piguet Column-wheel chronographs, that shame the Rolex movements. If anything, Rolex makes bulky, inartistic movements, pumped out to over 1 million/year, that are reliable and accurate to a point. Omega and Cartier play exactly the same game, you just don’t know it because the pieces you are buying from them are not high in demand in comparison to the supply. To buy a 321 Speedy or a Snoopy, you need a purchase history. To buy certain limited editions from Cartier, you need a purchase history. Now that the 40mm version is available, I haven't heard anything about the 36mm from my authorised dealer. So, I thought, why not put my name down for the 40mm as well? It might be a better fit for me since I'm tall. But they said that without a purchase history, I can't get the latest release. I see the staff wearing Daytonas, which doesn't make sense. That's what we all grew up having be the norm right? Now you go into the AD and are told to give the sales guy a handy behind the store, buy 50k worth of Jewlery you don't want just to get the watch you want, told to get out of their store because you're beneath their elite client base, or put your name down on a fake list for half a decade to never be called back. Add that into the fact that every loud d-bag, influencer, crypto brah, or drug dealer is now rocking a Batman, Pepsi, or Daytona and you have to seriously question if you want to be associated with this brand anymore to begin with? It's not what it once was and Omega, Glasshutte, IWC, Breitling, Grand Seiko and Panerai are all creating equally incredible timepieces with actual good customer experiences and want to earn your business.

You must really struggle with maths if you think getting an Omega saved you money... Omega are over priced by 40% so you lost 40% of the cost of the watch the moment you bought it, and you will keep losing hundreds each year. On the other hand, Rolex Explorer 2 is priced MSRP below its value so you would of made thousands if you just waited ha.

For traveling I found the best way for someone like us that loves watch is to wear a “heavy hitter” specific to ur collection ur fav watch even then bring the lowest one single mechanical or like I do a Casio and a g shock in the roll I don’t normally go away for long periods of time normally 2 weeks and sometimes I wish I brought a dress watch and a couple other nicer watch but if you pick ur one watch correctly (I bring my 16610 from 2007 bought by my grandfather and wore maybe 5 times by him when he sadly passed) you bring *that * watch, if you know you will be safe if 15:07 not you bring just something you strongly enjoy and love. then the low ends if needed iv been on amazing vacation to the Bahamas, Japan, Australia, Italy, Greece and to 38 states domestically. every time I’m happy I brought my Casios (my gf wears one of them 99% of the time) and I’m happy I brought my Rolex at specific points. It is nice to have a little trinket worth 10k that if done right won’t cause any problems and will provide security within resource procurement rather quickly for example my dad and his best friend pawned their seikos in Daytona beach to get enough money to bail out another friend, I believe this friend also on another trip ate bread and cheese sandwiches all trip because he bought a seiko, this is all in the 70s😂😂 I’m not joking at all either, my dad is a rather serious person but the things that happen in his life and my grandfather life also they he tells me need to be in a book.

Excellent content here (again), Teddy. On the subject of servicing, my experience with Seiko has been very good, not just in regard to transparency regarding cost, but also breadth: I have a 6139 "blue eye" chronograph dating from 1977. Not only does Seiko still service that movement (Yes, it was one of their groundbreaking achievements, so that probably helps), but the quoted price is *quite* reasonable in light of what a clean example of these watches go for now. This makes for a brand I'm compelled to stick with.

You nailed it with your comment about loving our watches because they are that rare thing built to last in a world of disposables. I still love my hand-wound mechanical watch I bought 50 years ago when I was 16, an Omega Geneva, that still runs very nicely. I have a question though. I was willing to pay for servicing my Omega by a local reputable service, but had quartz watches that have come and gone because the repair price equals the price of the watch. Where do we draw the line between watches that we fix vs ones that we abandon? I’m sure sentimental value is part of the answer.

You have essentially just described why companies invest so heavily in brand awareness and value. Brands like Rolex, Apple, Dyson, Nike etc. just do it better than everyone else, whilst offering a quality product. There is such a salty "boo hoo" culture surrounding Rolex. People really need to just grow up about it 😂

People that treat watches as a hobby (as we do) i.e. subscribe to Teddy/other KZbin herology channels, enjoy detailed videos on movements, attend red bar events, geek out on technical specs etc. make up an absolutely tiny percentage of watch buyers. Ask Teddy, he will tell you exactly the same thing. You highlighted this by saying "ask any 'guy' on this channel" and "grail watch". The best selling Rolex is a ladies DateJust; how many girls are active in this comment feed do you think? I'd guess maybe 2% of the comments are woman, probably lower. Ask the general public what a "grail watch" is, they will have no idea. The average person is not a watch "enthusiast", they just want to buy a good watch, so look to the big brands. And if they have the money, they'll be after a "luxury" model. It's like attending a car rally for Mini Cooper or GTi enthusiasts; are they a true representation of all Mini Cooper or GTi owners? Well, of course they are not. Most people that buy a Rolex are the general public and will have no idea who Teddy is and if it's their first watch, probably won't know what an automatic movement is before the sales rep goes through it with them. And I don't have a problem with that at all. The snobbery and self-righteous nature of the "watch community" is so off putting sometimes.

Though one thing to be aware of when travelling internationally. If you travel with multiple 'expensive' watches then there's a chance that customs might give you a hard time. Most countries have rules about how much 'cash' you're allowed to bring across the border, and since watches can be fairly easily sold they can be considered 'imported merchandise' and subject to an import tax/duty charge! For instance, the USA won't freely allow most people to enter the country carrying $300,000.00 in cash, so they don't want people circumventing these rules by wearing a $300,000.00 wristwatch and then selling it ;)

Of course, if it is a special event get your special event watch on the trip with you. Finally, I don't recommend hesalite watches on airports/planes, especially if you have to do connections or it might get hectic, I unavertedly deeply scratched my DPH200M and had to service it with less than a year of wear, so unless is a Casio I rather wear a mineral or saphire

There's a difference between having to save up/wait for a desirable product and what Rolex and their ADs are doing. When I hear grey-market dealer YTers talk about "keeping your spend up" like it's the most natural thing in the world to spend four or five figure sums for watches you don't really want just so you'll be eligible to spend four or five figure sums later on a watch you *do* want, I can't help but wonder if everyone's hasn't gone a bit bonkers. Just imagine walking into any other high-end, luxury store with enough money and being (politely and indirectly) told that you cannot buy, say, a pair of pants or a leather jacket because you don't have "a history" with the store. And that you'd then have to buy a sweater, two or three shirts and perhaps a bra and fur-coat for your girlfriend and then... maybe ... you'd "qualify" to buy that pair of jeans or leather jacket. A bit mad, right? IMO, Rolex isn't really a normal retail-business at this point. It's more like the door of the currently hippest night-club in town. And before anyone blames the ADs and their greed for this: The ADs don't produce these watches and they can't get them anywhere else but from Rolex. So if Rolex wanted to do something about this, I'm pretty sure they could. One good indicator that they're not too concerned with any of this is the way they've been increasing their MSRPs every single year for quite a while now. A Submariner Date now sits at over €10,000 - used to be around 7 or 8k not too long ago, IIRC.

@Matthew Choate great choice on the GS. Their iconic watch. I was wearing my SBGE255 which is the GS version of a Explorer II while in a local Rolex AD. They had a GMT blue/black on jubilee on display. I have one on the oyster but still wanted to look at it. I slipped off my GS and made sure that the woman helping saw what I was wearing and put on the GMT Master. I looked her square in the eye and took out my Amex and told her I would take it. Flat out refused to sell it to me. Wouldn't budge at all, no way. A month later we were in Edinburgh for Christmas and my wife was shopping on Princes st and I was watch shopping. I was wearing a Yema Superman 500 in black/white sapphire bezel. I was looking for a 42mm Pelagos and found on at the Tudor AD. Tried it on and bought it without issue or ridiculous hoop jumping. Treated well and they made sure to size it beautifully for me. I wore it out and they kept the box and my Yema in the safe for me overnight so I could pick it up the next day. Down the street I walked into another dealer who had Zenith, and other brands I was interested in. The manager was amazing to talk to. We talked watches and he showed me lots of great products. I told him I just bought the Pelagos on wrist 20min ago and leaving with my El Primero would be a bit too much to explain to the wife unit. But we exchanged information and when I am in the market for certain GS or Zenith I will contact him and purchase from him. Regardless of my being in Seattle. That's what a relationship in high end watches should be like. Mutual respect for the watches. Not being treated like slime for wanting to spend money with their brand.

@@JoeinPNW exactly when I bought my GS from my AD it was a great experience and I’m also looking at a Tudor either the black bay pro, BB54, or the black bay ceramic. I will go to the same AD I got the GS from and they are very nice and I will continue to shop at that AD. It just very annoying when I have the money for a Pepsi GMT but Rolex doesn’t dem me worthy. Unlike every other brand who begs me to buy their watch, Rolex wants me to beg them for no reason

@Matthew Choate same for me. A BB54 is suddenly on my want list. Just need to make sure it isn't too small. Otherwise a BB58 or the new BB with he red bezel will do very nicely. I'll be in Japan later this year and I definitely want to buy a GS in Japan. That would be fun I think. And like you said, buying from a dealer should be a experience you enjoy and look forward to. It's fine to buy second hand and I still do, but once in awhile, the dealer experience is a fun one.

@@JoeinPNW yea I will buy a GS in Japan when I go for sure, I want at least one of each movement. And will also buy a watch in Geneva when I go there maybe next year. My local dealer I think has the BB54 in stock I just need to swing by. Right now my plan is to buy at least 1 more luxury watch from that AD before summer 2024 to maybe help my chances for the GMT. I was looking at the BB Pro. But will probably wait for the GMT master for my GMT watch

Spot on in the Price On Request segment. I'd be bummed if I saw a watch online priced 450.000 USD/EUR/CHF and, at the AD they asked 465.000 for it.

I ordered an OP 36mm 8 months ago. I just got the call. I’m now inclined to believe that Rolex does its best to meet demand. No wonder they have 30% of the market.

That tip about sending your watch through TSA is great. I’ve put my Black Bay 58 in that plastic bin and had a heart attack the whole time until I saw it on the other side. Next time, I’ll definitely put it in a bag or watch pouch.

I refuse to be played by Rolex. Now I am building a collection of Cartier. They have good watches. Classy and full of heritage. I got excellent services at the Cartier store.

12:53 , Apple Watch was the one that got me interested in watches and even if I agree that it may have not have soul like mechanical one's I still enjoy wearing it and heck it even does come with story behind like regular watches carry with them ( Shortly ,It was a gift from my mom when she got her job ,It was with me when I was doing background acting (big deal cuz I love movies) ,whem I watched and read like there's no tomorrow about watches and more) so It accompanied me and created stories like regular one ,and mostly brought me here ,kinda showed me hobby that will last with me till the end of my life :) peace!

I have been confirmed on the waitlist for a D.J41. The new revise on the Tudor BB39/41 has me wanting to cancel that and grab the BB. Perhaps grab the new 40mm explorer instead. Yet would be reseting the waitlist with no purchase history, asides from a tudor. A very interesting predicament, as I know i'd love the DJ.

Speaking of the traveling piece, should you wear your watch while walking through the metal detector? Could it demagnetize your watch?
