My wife bought me this watch last week as a 10th Wedding Anniversary gift. We were cruising New Zealand and Fiji out of Sydney and it was bought on our last night of the cruise. I absolutely love it. It's also my very first watch above £500. My father was a watch maker and I well remember sitting at the dining room table 'watching' him make components, cleaning them, reassembling them. He also had a Longine watch as a gift from his parents for his 21st birthday, which I have. Think I may visit my 'Evil Wicked Step Daughter' who currently works for Swatch in Switzerland and visit Longine whilst I'm there....

@@carsan9439 Yes, it is not an annual calendar but there is an annual calendar Longines Master Collection three hand which I would recommend over this unless you like the aesthetics of a chronograph/moonphase. It's also printed indices and I would suggest looking at the three hand blue Roman numeral applied indices variant, which is a stunner in person.

I have this watch for some years now, with leather strap, AND I LOVE IT. In my opinion, if you want a truly technologically advanced watch, this is the ONLY one that comes in an 'earthy' price, everything else similar is much more expensive. Aesthetically IT is fabulous and its thickness (the only weakness from a design point) goes really unnoticed. I can list numerous pros but let's stick to the cons for everyday usage: First, the brown alligator leather strap is great but when it wears out or get damaged (which is a matter of 2-3 years at the most) replacing it with original is a very costly (comparatively) matter (more than 200 euros, strap cost only), a very similar looking (decent quality but certainly inferior to the original) leather strap can be found at one tenth or less of the price and is a much more sensible solution. Second, regarding practicality, as correctly mentioned in the video , seeing the time might be a little (not too much) confusing sometimes. The reason for it is actually the date arm which can be confused with the minutes ' arm. In my opinion this problem would have been resolved if the date' arm was of a different colour (eg margenta, this would have probably made its looks a little less 'classy' but with the right alternative colour this would have not been an issue). Also, the 'Longines' logo could have been in 3-D and not 'printed' - a visible improvement at negligible cost. Coming now to the main con, maintenance.... The watch was working flawlessly (very accurately) for 4-5 years when suddenly it started to 'stuck'. I got it to the local official service and they told me it needed 'upgraded' cleaning necessitating dismantle which means it had to go to the factory in Switzerland. Cost 400 euros, waiting time 4 months ... . They also noted that this is not abnormal , the watch collects dust and I should have been taking it for preventive cleaning every year or so.... To me this is absolutely bullocks... we are talking about a waterproof watch, I can not understand how can 'dust' go in that easily but ok this may happen... but if I have to take the watch for 'cleaning' every year, this means I would essentially be re-paying for the watch every 6-7 years, it simply does not make sense... May be I was unlucky, which can happen, but if this is 'common' it is not nice at all (the watch was handled with care, it is not that it fell down or anything, which is why thay did not find any 'damage' as such...). In any case the above issues are essentially minor, this is trully a GREAT watch and it comes at a very very reasonable price (it is actually very very cheap for a swiss hand-made automatic multi function watch...)
@saymyname2183 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the dust problem being bollocks. My Aunt worked in a Omega shop for 45 years and she told me that the servicing recommendations are a well known "scam" within the industry. She told me that people should wear their watches (without fear of not servicing) and simply wait for something to go wrong. when it does, (And this could take 30 years)...."Get it fixed!!" It may cost you £1000 or more but think much it would have cost you in servicing costs over 2 or 3 decades. At the end of the day, they are businesses and their servicing scams are a way of getting their customers to pay again and again for the same watch.
@SigaSigaJohn3 жыл бұрын
@@saymyname218 Thank you very much my friend for your comments.I fully agree with you, despite my aforementioned experince I would not be taking my watch for 'cleaning' every year, it is pointless and bad vfm, I would rather take my chances and in any case when you buy such a complicated mechanism you do expect that if something goes wrong it would not be a quick or cheap fix... and the money they asked may be significant for the price of the watch but it is very reasonable for getting the watch fixed by the manufacturer in Switzerland (and I do understand how much a technician's wage is in Switzerland...)

@@SigaSigaJohn Quick question. Does this include the annual calendar as well, or do I have to adjust the day and month every month too? I feel that this would have been the perfect “complete” watch if there is an annual calendar to it, especially at the price point. 🥲
@SigaSigaJohn3 жыл бұрын
@@eugeneteehee As in every mechanical watch, you have to adjust manually the date at the end of months that do not have 31 days, ie when the month has 30 days you have to advance the date manually one day ahead to change the month. This is quite easy, one click through the crown. Otherwise the watch follows calendar / days, months, moon phases etc on its own. If you let the watch out of operation for a long period which means you have to adjust all parameters manually (ie time, day, date, month, moonphase) then this will take more time, a couple of minutes but is not difficult. Nevertheless, if you let the watch out of order too often which means you have to make full adjustments very frequently, my feeling (is just a feeling...) is that the related springs etc are somewhat sensitive and they may need maintenance. I hope I helped!
@eugeneteehee3 жыл бұрын
@@SigaSigaJohn Thanks for the reply. You sort of did answer my question with your confirmation for this watch, but I believe you may not know that there are annual calendar watches, and then there’s perpetual calendar. Let’s start with perpetual calendar. As the name goes, it’s perpetual, so you won’t have to change the date (day and month) at all, even for February (both non-leap and leap years). It’s a very interesting mechanism. This usually applies up until the year 2100, then you need to adjust it just once for the next 100 years. There are also some high end ones that are do up until year 2499 or so. Annual calendar is like the middle ground (between the typical date watch and the perpetual calendar). You don’t have to change it every month, but you must change it every year, because it is able to adjust accordingly for 30/31 days based on the specific month, EXCEPT February, so you must move it to 1st March, ANNUALLY. See what I mean? This was started by Patek Phillipe in 1995, which is fairly new in the watch world. Longines has annual calendar watches in their master collection, by the way, but it’s just that. My dream watch is having annual calendar and a chronograph combined. It would have been the perfect “complete” watch for me. 🙂

According to the instructions from Longines, the "danger zone" for this watch is 7:00PM to 6:00AM. Plus, the chronograph should not be running when adjusting the time or other complications. I finally found a used model with bracelet in Tokyo at a used watch shop for $2000 US equivalence with box and papers in early 2020 (before covid shutdown). 2017 date, and dealer said he's had it on trade for over a year. It's been my travel watch, and was daily wear until a couple of months ago. I love the look. Main downside is that it can be hard to read the time at a glance when the hour or minute hand are overlapping the date hand. I have seen this watch new advertised for $2K on some websites in the recent past. Currently loses 1 minute every 3 days.

I looked at this watch but in my opinion the ML looks much better - anthracite dial, guilloche finishing and rose gold accents - which is why I opted to purchase that instead of this Longines (plus I’ve had a bad experience with a Longines watch and it’s inferior build). Effectively both watches have the same ETA/Valjoux 7751 movement which incidentally Omega used in their now discontinued Speedmaster Triple Date watch - but both ML & Longines modified the 7751 adding moon phase. I love my ML. It Looks great and very good value considering all of the complications and features. Anyway - that’s my two pence worth 🤓.

The ML has no column wheel, no silicon balance spring (so no anti-magnetism and shorter service time) less power reserve and bigger price tag, and I guess, but not sure, the ML doesn't come with a 5 year warranty. Longines is just unbeatable in this price range.

@@mommi1979 - I think so - the movement is the same - other than the fact Longines change some parts to give it different features - like you say adding silicon spring makes it anti-magnetic etc etc - but the core movement is the same in that is displays exactly what the ML does e.g. day, date, Chronograph etc etc - and it had a 5 yr service interval

@@visi5649 So what you are saying is that if two watch faces show the same information their respective movements are basically the same. lol

@@mommi1979 - No! What I am saying D D is that some watches have the same movement with a few minor part changes

Great review as always. Like others, not something I’d go out searching for; but now that I’ve seen it, and at the price, I could see adding it to the collection.

Are there new iterations to change the polish parts to brush, make it thinner to 13.8mm, longer power reserve?

Great review Teddy. I'm waiting for a review of the Longines Hydroconquest Ceramic. I'm hoping for one for my birthday in December. (My wife is really good about bday gifts!)

I have the 42 mm version in blue with a blue leather strap, I love it and it’s a lot easier to read than my 39mm speedmaster triple date.

I bought a Longines Master with date and Moonphase. This one was too clunky, it's a pitty. I would have considered this one if it would not have the chrono, it overloads it for me... Cool feature would be to replace the 24 hour with an am/pm indicator (sun/moon), like on the retrograde. Longines is also nice for being the cheapest brand with a crocodile strap, blued hands, the luxury features.

I've always liked Longines. Don't know why. I've never owned one, but for some reason I just always get drawn in to the "click bait" when I see one on a thumbnail.lol

Beautiful watch, and great value for money. However, my money will be going for bicompax version this December (hopefully). Thank you for another exquisite review.

Can you talk a little about the sea-gull ST1908 caliber, it’s an insane movement based on the ST1901 from the 1963 sea-gull military watch you reviewed earlier, the st1908 caliber has a mechanical chronograph, a true moon phase, and a date complication… for less than 200$

From the 4:18 to 4:32 mark - isn’t the time at 10 when you are adjusting the day of the week? Isn’t that “bad” for it?

The more complicated, the sooner something will misfire. It is impressive looking though and Longines is a class brand.
