My wife bought me this watch last week as a 10th Wedding Anniversary gift. We were cruising New Zealand and Fiji out of Sydney and it was bought on our last night of the cruise. I absolutely love it. It's also my very first watch above £500. My father was a watch maker and I well remember sitting at the dining room table 'watching' him make components, cleaning them, reassembling them. He also had a Longine watch as a gift from his parents for his 21st birthday, which I have. Think I may visit my 'Evil Wicked Step Daughter' who currently works for Swatch in Switzerland and visit Longine whilst I'm there....

I have this watch for some years now, with leather strap, AND I LOVE IT. In my opinion, if you want a truly technologically advanced watch, this is the ONLY one that comes in an 'earthy' price, everything else similar is much more expensive. Aesthetically IT is fabulous and its thickness (the only weakness from a design point) goes really unnoticed. I can list numerous pros but let's stick to the cons for everyday usage: First, the brown alligator leather strap is great but when it wears out or get damaged (which is a matter of 2-3 years at the most) replacing it with original is a very costly (comparatively) matter (more than 200 euros, strap cost only), a very similar looking (decent quality but certainly inferior to the original) leather strap can be found at one tenth or less of the price and is a much more sensible solution. Second, regarding practicality, as correctly mentioned in the video , seeing the time might be a little (not too much) confusing sometimes. The reason for it is actually the date arm which can be confused with the minutes ' arm. In my opinion this problem would have been resolved if the date' arm was of a different colour (eg margenta, this would have probably made its looks a little less 'classy' but with the right alternative colour this would have not been an issue). Also, the 'Longines' logo could have been in 3-D and not 'printed' - a visible improvement at negligible cost. Coming now to the main con, maintenance.... The watch was working flawlessly (very accurately) for 4-5 years when suddenly it started to 'stuck'. I got it to the local official service and they told me it needed 'upgraded' cleaning necessitating dismantle which means it had to go to the factory in Switzerland. Cost 400 euros, waiting time 4 months ... . They also noted that this is not abnormal , the watch collects dust and I should have been taking it for preventive cleaning every year or so.... To me this is absolutely bullocks... we are talking about a waterproof watch, I can not understand how can 'dust' go in that easily but ok this may happen... but if I have to take the watch for 'cleaning' every year, this means I would essentially be re-paying for the watch every 6-7 years, it simply does not make sense... May be I was unlucky, which can happen, but if this is 'common' it is not nice at all (the watch was handled with care, it is not that it fell down or anything, which is why thay did not find any 'damage' as such...). In any case the above issues are essentially minor, this is trully a GREAT watch and it comes at a very very reasonable price (it is actually very very cheap for a swiss hand-made automatic multi function watch...)
@saymyname218
@saymyname218 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the dust problem being bollocks. My Aunt worked in a Omega shop for 45 years and she told me that the servicing recommendations are a well known "scam" within the industry. She told me that people should wear their watches (without fear of not servicing) and simply wait for something to go wrong. when it does, (And this could take 30 years)...."Get it fixed!!" It may cost you £1000 or more but think much it would have cost you in servicing costs over 2 or 3 decades. At the end of the day, they are businesses and their servicing scams are a way of getting their customers to pay again and again for the same watch.
@SigaSigaJohn
@SigaSigaJohn 2 жыл бұрын
@@saymyname218 Thank you very much my friend for your comments.I fully agree with you, despite my aforementioned experince I would not be taking my watch for 'cleaning' every year, it is pointless and bad vfm, I would rather take my chances and in any case when you buy such a complicated mechanism you do expect that if something goes wrong it would not be a quick or cheap fix... and the money they asked may be significant for the price of the watch but it is very reasonable for getting the watch fixed by the manufacturer in Switzerland (and I do understand how much a technician's wage is in Switzerland...)

@@SigaSigaJohn Quick question. Does this include the annual calendar as well, or do I have to adjust the day and month every month too? I feel that this would have been the perfect “complete” watch if there is an annual calendar to it, especially at the price point. 🥲
@SigaSigaJohn
@SigaSigaJohn 2 жыл бұрын
@@eugeneteehee As in every mechanical watch, you have to adjust manually the date at the end of months that do not have 31 days, ie when the month has 30 days you have to advance the date manually one day ahead to change the month. This is quite easy, one click through the crown. Otherwise the watch follows calendar / days, months, moon phases etc on its own. If you let the watch out of operation for a long period which means you have to adjust all parameters manually (ie time, day, date, month, moonphase) then this will take more time, a couple of minutes but is not difficult. Nevertheless, if you let the watch out of order too often which means you have to make full adjustments very frequently, my feeling (is just a feeling...) is that the related springs etc are somewhat sensitive and they may need maintenance. I hope I helped!
@eugeneteehee
@eugeneteehee 2 жыл бұрын
@@SigaSigaJohn Thanks for the reply. You sort of did answer my question with your confirmation for this watch, but I believe you may not know that there are annual calendar watches, and then there’s perpetual calendar. Let’s start with perpetual calendar. As the name goes, it’s perpetual, so you won’t have to change the date (day and month) at all, even for February (both non-leap and leap years). It’s a very interesting mechanism. This usually applies up until the year 2100, then you need to adjust it just once for the next 100 years. There are also some high end ones that are do up until year 2499 or so. Annual calendar is like the middle ground (between the typical date watch and the perpetual calendar). You don’t have to change it every month, but you must change it every year, because it is able to adjust accordingly for 30/31 days based on the specific month, EXCEPT February, so you must move it to 1st March, ANNUALLY. See what I mean? This was started by Patek Phillipe in 1995, which is fairly new in the watch world. Longines has annual calendar watches in their master collection, by the way, but it’s just that. My dream watch is having annual calendar and a chronograph combined. It would have been the perfect “complete” watch for me. 🙂

According to the instructions from Longines, the "danger zone" for this watch is 7:00PM to 6:00AM. Plus, the chronograph should not be running when adjusting the time or other complications. I have a Frederique Constant Perpetual Calendar that cost 3 times this watch (though that watch does correct for variations in month length and even leap year). This watch is an incredible bargain with all those complications for under $3,000USD. Great review, too!

Great video and a very fair review. I’ve owned this watch for 10 years with the black face and totally agree it can be a little busy and even difficult to tell the time, this is however offset by the detail and complexity of the movement as described. Although this is not one of the big luxury brands, Longines has fantastic history and is a much more affordable option into the realm of watches.

This was a target watch for me when I first saw it at a dealer showroom 3 or 4 years ago. They had only leather band models, and I only wear bracelets. I finally found a used model with bracelet in Tokyo at a used watch shop for $2000 US equivalence with box and papers in early 2020 (before covid shutdown). 2017 date, and dealer said he's had it on trade for over a year. It's been my travel watch, and was daily wear until a couple of months ago. I love the look. Main downside is that it can be hard to read the time at a glance when the hour or minute hand are overlapping the date hand. I have seen this watch new advertised for $2K on some websites in the recent past. Currently loses 1 minute every 3 days.

I bought this watch three years ago and it's fantastic. Love the moonphase and the fact that it has day, month and date - great for working if you need to know these quickly. I recently changed the strap to a Longines dark brown leather strap with light brown saddle stitching and I actually prefer it as it's still elegant but because the watch has 'more going on' and thicker, it's a lot more sporty and I now tend to wear it with more everyday outfits but not formal or evening suits or tuxedos. Also, it keeps pretty accurate time. It would be awesome if they could have the hands and large Arabic numbers with lumino for seeing the time at night, however that's just my wish - but I would definitely pay more for that feature. Fabulous watch all around though and I would definitely recommend it.

This watch has been on my radar for a long time now, but I just cant get past the two different fonts on the dial it just looks off to me. Id love this watch with the courier typeface font combined with the font they are using for the hour markers, I think that would look much better

My wife got me this watch in 42mm as an engagement gift in 2014. The one major downer to it is that my model does not have the column wheel version of the movement.

My heart is set on this one. My grandfather had a Longines and I am currently saving for this one. There is a black dial with Roman numerals that I enjoy but I’m not sure it’s the same movement in the 42mm. Maybe older.

I bought this watch 3 years ago for precisely the same reason. It packed so much complication for the price of a Black Bay. The only down side for me is it has so much information on the dial, sometimes it’s hard to read for my old man eyes…

Can you talk a little about the sea-gull ST1908 caliber, it’s an insane movement based on the ST1901 from the 1963 sea-gull military watch you reviewed earlier, the st1908 caliber has a mechanical chronograph, a true moon phase, and a date complication… for less than 200$

I do like the Dial, altough there are other Variants that are less noisy, but i love the classy white Guilloche. But i cant stand this watch on a SS Bracelet, to me this Watch belongs to a good Leatherstrap, which changes the Character of the Watch a lot.

I have a Maurice Lacroix Chronographe Phase de Lune which I purchased in 2018 which is exactly the same. I looked at this watch but in my opinion the ML looks much better - anthracite dial, guilloche finishing and rose gold accents - which is why I opted to purchase that instead of this Longines (plus I’ve had a bad experience with a Longines watch and it’s inferior build). Effectively both watches have the same ETA/Valjoux 7751 movement which incidentally Omega used in their now discontinued Speedmaster Triple Date watch - but both ML & Longines modified the 7751 adding moon phase. I love my ML. It Looks great and very good value considering all of the complications and features. Anyway - that’s my two pence worth 🤓.

I don't think so, this one is an exclusive modification for Longines. The ML has no column wheel, no silicon balance spring (so no anti-magnetism and shorter service time) less power reserve and bigger price tag, and I guess, but not sure, the ML doesn't come with a 5 year warranty. Longines is just unbeatable in this price range.
@visi5649
@visi5649 2 жыл бұрын
@@mommi1979 - I think so - the movement is the same - other than the fact Longines change some parts to give it different features - like you say adding silicon spring makes it anti-magnetic etc etc - but the core movement is the same in that is displays exactly what the ML does e.g. day, date, Chronograph etc etc - and it had a 5 yr service interval

I am the happy owner of this LONGINES Master Collection. This watch is close to perfect . I only get one problem but due to my age (63 y.o.) . Even with my corrective glasses, i cannot see all the informations given by the watch. I need the day light or a very powerful light to read all . Anyway, it is a full pleasure to wear it every day. I wish to buy a REVERSO but today i cannot by a 15 000 $ watch. I still hope.

I wouldn’t want to take it swimming, but 30m of resistance would likely restrict whether I would even want the watch around if I were to, say, go to the lake. That issue aside, I absolutely love this watch. Not sure if I will ever get it, but I am a fan.

Interesting modification to column wheel operation. Have a Sinn 6026 ST with the standard 7751 movement or not actual standard- a nicely decorated one. More practical, higher water resistance.

I had a big struggle deciding between this Longines and the German Union Glashütte Belisar Chronograph Mondphase. In the end I chose the Union Glashütte, mainly due to the dial being more eligable and, not unimportant, the price being a couple hundreds euros less.

I've been seriously considering this watch for some time. It is a kind of white elephant, I think. It would be nice to keep it on display, or hidden in a drawer at home, for sure, but it's not very practical to wear. First of all, the month/day windows are so small, that seeing the letters in real-life situations is difficult. The same goes for the seconds hand. It is too tiny, in fact, almost invisible. It would have been much more sensible to put a nice sun/moon dial with a seconds scale around its perimeter and larger seconds hand at the 9 o'clock position. Instead of the date hand and the printed numbers, a date window would have greatly simplified the main dial, and not just the date reading, but the quick and precise reading of the time, too. The marking of the stopwatch subdials is too faint to enable a precise reading, and all three subdials, in fact, could be a tad larger. The logo sits in the middle of a huge empty area, whereas the rest of the dial is overcrowded with numbers. Very unbalanced, indeed. I'm not too happy about the size of the letters/numbers and the chosen fonts. This watch is a very good, solid watch technologically, but the design of its face is, clearly, far inferior to its movement. OK, the designer's hand was tied by the geometry of the movement, but still, the dial could have been executed with much more care and attention to detail. After all, it's a top category watch of a prestigious Swiss brand, even if it is one with a more affordable price. Asking merely 3000 dollars for it shouldn't mean a poor face design, it ruins the fame of the brand, I think. I was a potential customer, but they have lost me because of these details. So, in my opinion, it's a nice collectors' item, but for daily, or even occasional wear it has not much more use than showing off a complication watch. And then, it is only suitable for people with a relatively gentle lifestyle due to the mere 30m water resistance.

Very true. I have this on a leather strap. Wore it for a few weeks, but then went back to my minimalist Nixon quartz watch. Unless you have it on an auto winder, just the effort to set the time, date, day, moonphase is enough that you ignore it for something simpler.

I bought a Longines Master with date and Moonphase. This one was too clunky, it's a pitty. I would have considered this one if it would not have the chrono, it overloads it for me... Cool feature would be to replace the 24 hour with an am/pm indicator (sun/moon), like on the retrograde. Longines is also nice for being the cheapest brand with a crocodile strap, blued hands, the luxury features.

Great video Teddy and wonderful shots of the watch 👏. This is a model I always keep coming back to, although yet to buy. Yes, it isn’t perfect - no watch is - but it is incredible value for money with its number of complications. I’m always flipping between this barley corn dial, the black with the Romans and the beautiful sun-ray with applied markers - can never quite decide 🤔🤷‍♂️👍
