It's not really a *super* power if it needs to conform to the laws of physics. The idea of a superpower is that it's supernatural, meaning above nature, which in this case, also means above the laws of physics. Superpowers, by their very meaning, don't need to conform to the laws of physics, so having a superpower comes with that added benefit.

Now think of flying as another muscle but more of a brain muscle. Flying could initially give off the sensation as if you're forcing a burp or a fart or something. You'd feel your body act and react in order to fly. You can't really explain something that's never been done. That was just my go at it.

Rapid movement speed, temperature resistance, physical resistance, rapid reaction speed, and extreme energy efficiency (You could need a very large amount of energy, and only need a little oxygen, and food for it) would solve all of these problems except for the bends, but you could still fly at a low altitude, or just increase your altitude very slowly. To solve that, I think you would need to be able to somehow control the air pressure in a small vicinity around you, or be able to create an airtight bubble around you, and have a filter that decompresses the air, and then puts it in the bubble. You would also need an exit filter to get rid of the waste gasses, otherwise the bubble would burst, or even crush you with the extreme density that the small space containing so much air would have, but you have physical resistance to stop that, so the bubble would probably burst first. With all of these additional abilities/tools, I think that you would be able to fly without any problems.

There's lots of physics in films that don't work out. For instance, I calculated Iron Man in The Avengers in the space ship fan restarting the rotor was seeing about 3,600 G at top speed (60 radians/second in a 10m radius fan = 36,000m/s^2). This would reduce Tony Stark to a pulp inside his suit no matter how tough the external suit was.

So given flight(floating isnt even a goddamn topic, if you can magically fly you can magically propell yourself), you'll get too chilly if you go up too high and have to be sensible about how fast you go up and down relative to pressures. You could go up in the air and fly somewhat high. Just not too high. And you have to know how fast you can ascend or descend. I do not see the problems here. I do not like this man.

So this video is trying to be serious about superpowers and then it talks about decompression sickness when flying for real? So decompression sickenss happens with fast RELATIVE change of pressure so when underwater, the closer to surface you are the more slowly you have to ascend. Decompression stop is done in 3-5m under water. Thats 130-150kPa compared to 100kPa on the surface, thats 25-35% change on very small distance, which you can pass in less than a second. Now to get the same change in air above surface you need to change your altitude from 0m above see level to 3000m above see level (70kPa), so what is your speed? Even at 340m/s the speed of sound it will take you 9 seconds to reach that level which shouldnt kill you and the higher you get the longer distance you will have to travel for same relative pressure change.

If you think you know about physics, read the second paragraph. The first paragraph is just explaining some thoughts of mine about the information in this video: If one person were able to float, then weight loss would also mean less inertia (which is why in space, you an push a small rock away instead of pushing yourself away from a rock, given your location according to landmarks, or well, space marks, or you can push yourself away from a huge rock, but you cant push the huge rock away from you according to space marks. For example, if an asteroid that weights 100 tons is next to the moon, you can push yourself closer to the moon, but you ant push the asteroid closer to the moon, the same way you an push yourself further from the moon, but you cant push the asteroid further from the moon), allowing them to push themselves off of the air more easily. Here s a bit of a brainer for the nerdies out there: Newton s first law: Action and reaction. If you throw two rocks against each other, the force of them crashing pushes the other in an opposite direction, which is the opposite reaction. But if you throw one rock at another, they both go in the same direction. So what s the opposite reaction? And if you throw a rock at a wall, the wall wont move, so whats the reaction? And is it an equal reaction? And if you throw a rock at a thick blanket, the rock wont move either. So is there even a reaction? And is it opposite? >;)
@cialibb10 жыл бұрын
This is going to be a rather long comment. Just hang in there as I address the scenarios. There is an opposite and equal reaction in the scenarios. For throwing a rock at the wall, as the rock pushes against the wall, the wall pushes against the rock too. Think about it this way: if two people pressed their palms against each other's, and if they use the same amount if force to do so, neither one of their hands would move; it would be stationary. Somewhat the same is here. The wall wouldn't move, because it exerts the same amount of force towards the rock. Now, the rock would most likely bounce back, because since it would be considerably smaller, it would have a faster acceleration. Since the acceleration can't go through the wall, it would bounce back. The same applies to the thick blanket scenario. Now for the first case of the rocks. If one rock was bigger, the acceleration would be less. But I'm going to assume that one rock has a smaller mass, preferably the one that is about to be hit by another rock. As they collide, they push force against each other. Before I go into detail, I'll give you an example. As a bird flies upwards, it pushes down on the air with its wings, right? Well, the air also pushes back on IT. This makes it possible for the bird to propel upwards, but why does it go in only one direction? Now, if the bird only pushed down on the air, it would cause the air to accelerate. For the bird to go upwards, the air must push back as well. In the case of the rocks, as one rock hits the other, the force is equal. But since we assumed one is smaller in mass, the acceleration of the smaller object is faster than that of the larger object being thrown at it, thus causing it to hurtle in the same direction. If the rocks had the same mass, they would be stationary as they collided. Now, I haven't actually studied physics in school yet, but my siblings have taught me plenty, and combined with some research, this is my explanation. Hopefully it helps :)

siralicia Its not about helping, its about testing. Well, thanks for the answer. Though, I think the opposite reaction is the force that is not absorbed is redirected. The equal opposite reaction is actually that the rock bounces back just as fast as it hit the wall. Tho its better with a ball. The ball bounces back as fast as it hit the wall, and as far as it was thrown. Or almost, because drag and gravity cancel part of it. If I have 2 balls of the same mass, and both go at each other at the same speed, both will bounce back equally, but if one goes faster, then one energy will beat the other. Its like if Im in outer space and I jump off an asteroid that weights just as much as me, both me and the asteroid would accelerate at the same speed. But if the asteroid is heavier than me, then Ill push myself harder and go faster, while the asteroid absorbed less energy and goes slower, plus inertia also makes it go slower. And that s the reason why I make this comment. Some people say that whenever we jump, we push the Earth down an insignificant amount. But I think the Earth has so much mass, giving it so much inertia, that it can cancel out the force of my weight plus my push. Maybe if I were able to jump with the strength of 100 supernukes, then I would maybe move the Earth, even though I d get blasted in the opposite direction faster than any bullet. The reason I made this comment was seeking more support for this observation.

Oh, I see what you're saying. That makes much more sense. And I side with you on the jumping comment, though it's still debatable. Thanks for the help though!

I always imagined the flying superpower as having telekinetic powers to push back a large volume of air or other matter to accelerate, to prevent suffocation and extreme temperatures create a forcefield that contains air at a nice pressure and at the same time let's in fresh oxygen.

There's a huge distinction between floating and flying. The ability of flight can be attained through various factors; Wings (like most animals use), Wind manipulation (Storm from x-men), and Psychic powers like telekinesis (which can augment flight) are just some factors that relate to flying. I think this video is missing a point butI don't know what it is.

Actually, if you gained the ability to fly at a snail's pace, then you could solve all the other problems relatively easily: - Pressure suit - An astronaut-style suit could regulate your temperature, protect you from minor impacts of bugs/birds etc. and make sure you can breathe consistently. It probably wouldn't have to be as bulky as a real space suit, since you just need to survive in atmo, and not in a vacuum. - Parachute - In case you fall. Even if you are unconscious, it could be set to trigger based on altimeter; say dropping more than a certain speed deploys it automatically. - An engine - To give you some actual speed in air. Now, perhaps you think this is ridiculous. "Why can't we already do that?" but most of the energy for a jetpack goes towards keeping a person aloft...if your superpower takes care of that, then even a relatively small, efficient engine for acceleration would likely be sufficient.

Flying in this video isn't flying at all, it just makes you float. Flying without wings is just controlling the energy around you propelling you in the direction you want to go. Or I guess I should say, its basically telekinesis.. Also, this video didn't mention the word "wings"..
@thebeginningofknowledge80678 жыл бұрын
Scientifically speaking, this is very inaccurate due to the many, many variables included in being able to fly.
@thewierdoneout8 жыл бұрын
Honestly even if I couldn't "fly" per say, and still had to walk most of the time, the ability to float would still be incredibly useful. Think about all the things you could do if you could guarantee you won't crash when you fall. Mountain climbing, extreme parkour, free falling, jumping up and down like you're on a trampoline. I'd be awesome.

There was this youtuber who came up with a theory about superman. When you see superman flying its seems like something is just pushing him forward while he puts his hands out, it's seems normal but when he lifts something, it always stays the way it was. For example superman lifts a truck with one hand, it should bend but it doesn't. The theory is that superman can control gravity or gravatons around him.

flight in comic books is more often attributed to a sealed similar to the type of psychokinetic field propelling your body through space while protecting you from Tiny dust particles and extreme weather that's not turning off a two-year-old Being Yourself by pushing out air instead it is taking a theoretical Field of energy and pushing your body through the air by moving this Quantum field creating slight as we see it in comic books

Okay. Say you could float. All you need is to run, jump, and use your ability (with a gliding device. Wingsuit, cardboard pane.. Once high enough, you could glide around using your wingsuit. If you ever needed to gain altitude you could simply pull up and become virtually weightless again, increasing altitude and repeating the process until you have your desired speed. Landing? Just go into a stall and before you go into freefall, become weightless. The weight of the wingsuit will pull you down and because of your surface area, wind resistance would stop your fall from becoming gruesome.

While many in the comments are criticizing the video by virtue of it contextualizing a super natural ability in the scope physics, the video is merely ~exploring~ the natural feasibility of the feat. That’s why it’s called “If super powers were *real.*” While the idealized super power would not be hindered by the laws of physics, the video is simply exploring what it would be like in physical reality since, frankly, it’s very unlikely flying by supernatural means is a graspable possibility. It’s just something to think about, some mind fodder for the viewer to entertain.
