Fun Fact: There is another version of the myth where Daedalus didn't kill his nephew. In this version, his nephew was actually his apprentice and they were both praised in Athens. However, Daedalus' nephew died falling off Acropolis, where he had gone with his uncle to work, by accident and Daedalus was devastated. The Athenians without knowing what actually happened blamed Daedalus for his nephew's death and thus they exiled him to Crete. So in this version, Daedalus is not only not malicious, but even more of a tragic figure since he experiences the death of his beloved apprentices twice in exchange of his skill and freedom. The more you know!

The story of Icarus may be, but the story of Daedalus most certainly isn't. If you've read (or translated) this specific part of the metamorphoses by Ovid, you'll notice that the story isn't about Icarus at all. The kid's death was merely a punishment for Daedalus.

In the original telling of the myth by Ovid, the Latin actually refers to the fact that Daedalus wasn't really watching his son fly and wasn't even worried about him. He was watching the wings that Icarus was wearing and marveling at his own genius. (Also sidenote: In the Latin, it's hard to judge how old Icarus is. It's possible that he was as young as 7 or 8 when his dad entrusted him with this immense responsibility.)

People take this story too literally, it is about not aiming to low in life (flying low, near water) so that a persons mindset does not become increasingly self-disappointed (wings dampening due to flying low), and at such a low state that they can not climb again (wings to heavy), but also not flying to high that when you fail you feel crushed (flying to high - wings melt) and putting you in the water (wings disintegrating = fall into water), the aim is to 'fly' through life at just the right 'height' so you may successfully make it too the other side. Just my 2 cents.

Icarus and his dad's story is very interesting to me, there's a lot of different versions, and they're all so interesting. There's also one where, as Icarus fell, he laughed. He felt like a god, and as he fell, he laughed. He didn't seem to care he was about to die, he just laughed.

I stand on the cliffs with my son next to me This island our prison, our home And everyday we look out at the sea This place is all he's ever known But I've got a plan and some wax and some string; some feathers I stole from the birds We leap from the cliff and we hear the wind sing a song that's too perfect for words But son, please keep a steady wing And know your the only one that means anything to me Steer clear of the sun, or you'll find yourself in the sea Now safely away, I let out a cry "We'll make the mainland by noon" But Icarus climbs higher still in the sky Maybe I've spoken too soon Oh son, please keep a steady wing And know your the only one that means anything to me Steer clear of the sun, or you'll find yourself in the sea Won't you look at your wings They're coming undone They're splitting at the seams Steer clear of the sun, for once won't you listen to me? O, Gods! Why is this happening to me? All I wanted was a new life for my son to grow up free And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me I will never fly again, I will hang up my wings O, Gods! Why is this happening to me? All I wanted was a new life for my son to grow up free And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me I will never fly again, I will hang up my wings! O, Gods!

Bright enough for you to walk out at night, the only possible reasons they wouldn't have went out would be because it was constantly raining, snowing, or some other type of weather messing with the wings. Or because they would've been too tired to fly at night.

The rest of Daedalus’ story is actually really weird. He pushes his own nephew off a tower and a god turns his nephew into a bird. The bull was actually a gift from Posiden who wanted the king to sacrifice it to him, but the king kept it instead. And the Minotaur was eventually killed by a guy who got out of the labyrinth with a spool of string.

For any Tolkien fans out there I just had a little epiphany about Gandalf. When he was imprisoned on top of the tower of Orthanc he escaped with the help of the eagles. Does anyone else think this is symbolic of Gandalf's angelic characteristics or is this just a coincidence. My thoughts are that maybe Tolkien got inspiration from the story of Icarus and Daedalus.
@FinaleCadence7 жыл бұрын
George Frangoudes I think it might be a coincidence. Gandolf didn't distort the world around him (build fake wake wings) he merely called upon the Eagles for help. I think it says a great deal that the eagles were willing to help Gandolf, as opposed to Gandolf taking their feathers to make wings.
@matthewhecht92577 жыл бұрын
I know Tolkien was mostly inspired by Anglo-Saxon stories, and part of Lord of The Rings was to show that their elements were not inferior to the Greek stories.
@snowwonder98147 жыл бұрын
Maybe... but Tolkien was big fan of other mythologies, so maybe not. Gandalf's appearance and his wandering for instance were in part inspired by depictions of Odin, from Norse myth, and his name comes from Norse myth too. ;) Gandalf is literally an angel in Middle Earth though so that's right on point.
@ian32367 жыл бұрын
The Rohirrim too were inspired by the vikings. Look at their helmets and weapons. Plus the speeches given by the king was very much like going to Valhalla with death as the main source of motivation,

Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned in the labyrinth, not a tower, as punishment for Daedalus assisting Ariadne, king Minos daughter, in helping the hero, Theseus, slay the minotaur, not enabling the extramarital affairs of the queen. This was done by the use of a thread. Theseus used the thread or ball of yarn to find his way back out of the maze after killing the monster who had been feeding on the young people of his city. Interestingly, thread is the original meaning of the word clue. Daedalus and his son used wax from bees, not candles. Otherwise great animation and narration.

myths are told differently and have many interpretations as the greeks often didn't know how to write.

@evichryssou57967 жыл бұрын
iLike2watch exactly! I live in Greece and this is what we are taught so since it's Greek mythology I think it's more accurate:3 and what you said about the word "clue" coming from the word "thread" it's true because the Greek word for "thread" is very similar to the word "clue". Glad to know there are people like you outside Greece:)
@Blorboy7 жыл бұрын
Evi Chryssou Still though, about every myth was passed on orally, so many mythological stories have different versions. There isn't necessarily a "right" or "most accurate" version. 3×5 and 7+8 are both 15, neither are wrong and neither are more accurate than the other.

The story was like this: The king asked the god Poseidon what animal the god would like to be sacrificed, Poseidon then sent a beautiful white bull to be sacrificed. But the bull was so beautiful, it would be shame to kill it, so the king kept the bull and sacrificed another normal bull instead Poseidon then said "If you love that bull so much, how about I make your wife to fall in love with it!!".

1. The author wants us to be content with what we have. To be smart and knowledgeable is not enough if we are not content with it. 2. I learned that I should listen to my parents and their warnings because they want the best for us. Just like how Daedalus warned Icarus but when Icarus didn't listen something bad happened. 3. I would recommend this work in my younger brother for he doesn't listen to anything my mother was telling him that's why he encountered many accidents at such a young age.

a lot of people see icarus's story as a cautionary one, one that warns you about being consumed by ego but i like to think of it more as a story of passion. here's a poem about it that i found I am Icarus Many people see my death as a tragedy That is very wrong In my opinion, they did not tell you when Apollo gave me wings They did not tell you I knew I would burn in flames I knew, you see I knew the agony I would face And as I fell, I knew I did it for the sun As hot burning wax slithered down my spine, as seductive kisses of agony peppered my skin and muscle I laughed I laughed as where I saw beauty others saw pain I loved it you see, it was addictive And even Dionysus would marvel at my insanity There is no beauty without pain And now as I wait for judgment in the land of Hades I ask myself, was it worth the fall for the sun? And I answer yes Yes it was
