Before the creation of humanity, the Greek gods won a great battle against a race of giants called the Titans. Most Titans were destroyed or driven to the eternal hell of Tartarus. But the Titan Prometheus, whose name means foresight, persuaded his brother Epimetheus to fight with him on the side of the Gods. Iseult Gillespie shares the myth of Prometheus.

So, let me get this straight - - Prometheus means "Foresight"? - He and his brother joins the Gods to defeat the Titans - Prometheus creates humans and later gives them "Fire" (Or the means to no longer need the Gods) - He is imprisoned and tortured - Later he is freed by the son of the one who locked him up - Centuries/Millennia have passed and humans almost no longer worship the Greek pantheon - Greek Gods now seen as nothing more than myth and legend Did this Chad just play the long game in bringing down the Greek Gods?

Fun fact:when Hercules had do his 12 labors, one of them was to kill the bird that attacked prometheus every day, after Prometheus was freed, Zeus didn't imprison him again since Hercules was his son and probably reputation, so Prometheus was saved by Hercules

fun fact: you are wrong, killing the bird wasn't one of the labors but rather a side quest he just happened to cross close to where prometheus was, killed the bird and unchained prometheus without knowing who he was later zeus informs him that he cannot let prometheus escape his punishment unless someone takes his place then the centaur chiron gives his inmortality away in exchange for prometheus freedom.

Prometheus also had the power to see the future. Hundreds of years later, Heracles happened to meet him on his way to the 11th labor. He killed the bird and broke the chains. Prometheus helped him with the labor in return. But when Zeus punished Prometheus, he cursed him to be chained on this rock forever and now he couldn't take his words back. He (Zeus) asked Hephaestus to make a ring using metal from the chains and put a little piece of the mountain inside. In this way Prometheus could now live free despite the curse :)

In Greece, this myth is part of what we have to learn to write in our uni entrance exams. Ancient Greek grammar and syntax is tiring but philosophy always calms be down. I guess I am thankful that we have such amazing stories to learn. Along with the cave myth or however it's called in English by Aristotle where the chained human got free and saw the beauty of the outside.

The story of Prometheus has been misinterpreted and modified in the last two centuries especially by romantic writers to make Prometheus look like a hero or benefactor. In short, for centuries since Antiquity Prometheus has been viewed by poets, writers and authors as a lowly, jealous trickster who did not help or benefit anybody by his actions. He stole fire by hubris and envy, he hid it or misused it without helping anyone, and he was justly held accountable and punished, and when the time was right he was justly released by Herakles/Hercules under the instructions or with the permission of Zeus.

Those similarities are due to cultural exchanges between different civilizations when they had contact with each other. Merchants, immigrants and travellers would likely share language, culture, religion, experience and general knowlege whenever they travelled to other places. So of course this would cause similarities and reinterpretations of stories and myths.

Fun Fact: In another version of this myth, Zeus does not get intervene to the creation of man. This version suggests that Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, wasted all luxury and enforcements to the other animals and when finally it is the humans' turn to be finalized, he has nothing left to give to them (Epimetheus' name means the opposite of Prometheus', thinking after acting). So, when Zeus throws heavy cold on humans to punish Prometheus for siding with them instead of the Gods, Prometheus steals a coal from Hephaestus' forgery and it is him who teaches humans how to use fire!

Ugh, people in the comments comparing Prometheus to Lucifer. First of all, those two characters' motivations are completely different: Prometheus rebelled to benefit humanity while Lucifer rebelled to benefit himself. Secondly, stop trying to fit stories that developed in pre-Christian cultures into Abrahamic cookie cutters. Not all mythologies are "Christianity dressed in a different skin".

I'm pretty sure everyone knows that the Greek mythos predated Christianity as we understand it by thousands of years. Most intelligent people also know where Christianity as we know it comes from, and that the Greeks were a major cultural exporter across the mediterranean area and far beyond. Many also acknowledge that the cosmos are a big part of early mythopoeia, and Venus is a symbol tied (though I'm not sure how tenuously) to both figures. This isn't about cookie cutters, or about making Abrahamic religion more relevant than it already is. It's about recognizing the transference of information, and the persistence of both archetypes and narratives. Do what you will. I'd like to read some good-spirited discussion on the matter. For your consideration, a quote from "Prometheus-Demon" by Henry Lanz, for the journal of Slavic Studies, 1997: "As it is characteristic of Christianity, in the development of this particular theme as in everything else, the ancient Greek tradition joins hands with Hebrew speculations concerning Creation, and thus gradually Prometheus is transformed into Lucifer, or Satan, or Mephisto, or Cain, or whatever other name he may assume." Also, in more depth, the book Lucifer and Prometheus: a study of Milton's Satan by Werblowsky.

It was after Prometheus had stolen the fire and gave it to mankind, he was forced to watch them burn down a forest with the same fire he gave them. Even tho he was able to teach them something new and provide something that made their lives better and easier, he could not control what they did with it after and he could not take back what he had given them.
