We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

I do this weird thing where I smile when I tell the truth (and the other person thinks I'm lying). Only because I find it funny how they think I'm lying. It's really annoying when they say "You're smiling, which means you're lying"

The biggest flag I’ve seen when catching a liar, is if you bring something up to the person, and they deny it, and you act like you believe them and let it go, and then they act unnaturally upbeat and kinder than they usually are, that’s a big sign they were lying, and think they got away with the lie, and now they’re being overly nice because a: they’re happy they got away with their lie, and B: they’re still trying to trick you into believing their lie. Example: a cheater is being questioned by their spouse. The cheater isn’t usually over affectionate or romantic, but you accused them of cheating, and they came up with an excuse like “I had to work overtime” or “I was out with my buddies” and the girl is like “you’re right, I’m just over reacting” And then suddenly they’re like “it’s ok babe, I understand, you don’t need to worry, let’s cuddle xoxo” And they’re uncharacteristically being romantic and attentive. It may seem sweet, but in reality, if someone who wasn’t cheating were suddenly accused of it, they’d instinctively get mad or at least irritated. To the younger people here, look out for this ✋🏻

@@yespapa8102 The object isn't to interrogate. Besides, you might not know you're talking to a liar, so bombarding them with questions isn't what you'd be doing. The fact remains that nobody's capable of sustaining a lie for any length of time... they will say something completely contradictory to an earlier statement, because it's impossible to construct a wholly fictitious universe on the spur of the moment. That's why liars keep their relationships superficial.

Let me break it up to you: there is no consensus of when a person is lying. You either assume people don’t lie or assume people are always lying. You just never really know a stranger. It may be easier with friends/family because of patterns but even then you can never really be sure. Good book to read about lying is “talking to strangers”

The problem is that when someone tells a difficult truth, or one that seems unlikely, it will sound exactly as if they are lying according to this video. It does make it much easier if you question a potential unknown motive being the reason behind your lies. Example: I am limping because my leg hurts, but what if I have some unconscious desire for attention that is causing me to limp and feel pain. Therefore my leg mustn’t really hurt for I am only limping because of an unconscious motivation.

Kolin Martz Idem dito, it would seem to me that when attempting to cover a subject cautiously and precisely, convoluted language is a logical result. I would rather consider it quite the opposite of lying as you attempt to be as truthful as possible and lots of adjectives and adverbs tend to be a sound way of doing so. Myself, I find using language as such is received in very mixed ways. I do however tend to confront those who prefer simplified bite-sized information on the account of it not covering all the nuances properly. Reality is very complicated, it should be described with care...
@kolinmartz
@kolinmartz 9 жыл бұрын
Bavard I use convoluted language all the time, weather I am being truthful or being mendacious. This is my modus operandi and I am quite jubilant of the fact that a vast majority of what I orate seems to bewilder most of the people I converse with. Consequently, because they cannot decipher my utterance they simply belay their accusations.

@@philliprobinson7724 thanks for the AME references dude! But I have to beg to defer, Philip. How to you think religions have prospered so much despite so many "certifying engineers", like Russell or Bacon, critiquing them? It's because clerics are the best liars. They lie the biggest but do it so confidently that they start believing the lies themselves. Can you believe a big chunk of the American population, even among the educated ones, think Jesus walked on water?! Can you believe there are Muslims with Ph.Ds who think Muhammed flew to the 7 skies? So no, not even a certifying engineer has chance against a good lie. Btw, are you an AME?

The best liars are the ones that don't feel the guilt or the anxiety by doing it. They don't keep constantly thinking "I'm lying right now, can I do it, do they suspect me?" like what happens to the majority of people who try to lie. Also, when you really trust a person, and they have you sucked in, these "how to spot a liar" techniques don't even cross your mind. It's cool to imagine you catching every person that tries to lie to you, but reality is different. You get lied to most likely every day, probably multiple times a day without you knowing.
