We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day. And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable. Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

@@ihategooglesomuch Dostoevsky was a novelist, and in this quote, he was speaking about a character in his novel, a man. If you think that the idea of lying to oneself is simple and if you consider analyzing this profound topic a 'convoluted expression,' then, in my opinion, you have a serious lack of understanding in this matter.

Let me break it up to you: there is no consensus of when a person is lying. You either assume people don’t lie or assume people are always lying. You just never really know a stranger. It may be easier with friends/family because of patterns but even then you can never really be sure. Good book to read about lying is “talking to strangers”

I think these tips only work in an argument or when caught in bad behavior. Otherwise, they tend to be very positive - but vague - and don't ever tell you bad news. They like to tell you how well the business is doing right before you get your layoff notice in the mail. But yes my spouse uses his techniques pointed out here whenever she is caught or losing an argument. She uses a string of interruptions, and deflections similar to pointed out here. And then wonders why I think she is lying... or more accurately know she is lying. I should have known better when I saw how she lied to her parents ever time caught doing the opposite of what she stated.

Ways to lie better: • think and plan out situations of which the person you are lying to finds out you’re lying to them. (E.g., instead of saying “my friend let me” as they could just ask your friend, say “my friend’s brother’s girlfriend’s cousin’s boyfriend let me.” They won’t know who that is. • if you don’t want to tell someone something, tell them something smaller that happened instead. Instead of just not telling them entirely which makes them worried and wanting to know even more, or just completely making up a lie that could backfire very badly and leaving them wanting to know more, just tell the, something you don’t mind telling them. • don’t lie often. People realise you’re lying and don’t believe you as much. They loose trust in you. • Lie over people. Younger siblings blame it on you? Blame them back. Parents are more likely to believe you if you’re the oldest in that situation. (Only do it on siblings, though. Anyone else and you’re losing some friends.)

@@yespapa8102 The object isn't to interrogate. Besides, you might not know you're talking to a liar, so bombarding them with questions isn't what you'd be doing. The fact remains that nobody's capable of sustaining a lie for any length of time... they will say something completely contradictory to an earlier statement, because it's impossible to construct a wholly fictitious universe on the spur of the moment. That's why liars keep their relationships superficial.

Also seems like the least useful/interesting one. Especially those politicians' qutoes. There are plenty of similar sentences that were truthful but sound similar to the lies used in this video, it's just how politicans talk.

It does make it much easier if you question a potential unknown motive being the reason behind your lies. Example: I am limping because my leg hurts, but what if I have some unconscious desire for attention that is causing me to limp and feel pain. Therefore my leg mustn’t really hurt for I am only limping because of an unconscious motivation.
