That's true, I am Spanish native speaker from Colombia and I learned Portuguese as well and now improving my English... But such a tuff process. My University rejected my MS application in Civil Engineering about one point below the require score in the TOEFL test... It doesn't make sense for me... anyway the best way to learn a language is living it, you shall dive on it and into its culture and it takes tim, effort and courage.

4:44 - 4:57 I was doing a research paper for my English class and I found a ton of sources in Spanish. My teacher said that I could use them if I could find an English version to cite and translated the Spanish one. Sadly I couldn't find it, but my class lost an interesting piece of info they'd probably have enjoyed but it wasn't in English.

My point is all languages contain ideas but the process of reaching that idea is different. Each language is important and contains stories that others don't.

It is silly to demand a translation of the source... A university should be able to employ a teacher who can read the source, as it is obviously relevant to the field. Outside of English speaking countries, such a demand would be ridiculous.

It is bizarre to me that the vast majority of people who pass through modern school systems in English speaking countries are not bilingual. I was told over and over again that learning Japanese is a waste of time because it is only used in one relatively small country. Most of the people who told me this themselves were Japanese. But it has completely changed my life, and every day I'm glad I did.

I really hate how English is becoming such a global language. I can see the benefits to having a language that we all could speak, but it makes the native English speakers ridiculously ignorant. So many other Americans and Britons have told me that I'm wasting my time studying Spanish and Mandarin because I already speak English, and they never learn another language. This shuts them off from the real world culture. You cannot understand a culture without knowing its language. No exceptions.

i like ur thoughts. I speak Mandarin and am learning espaniol. There are a lot of differences between two languages. Like, when I literally translate some classic chinese jokes into english and tell people, they dont get it. Likewise, there are so many english jokes that I dont think it is funny.

I think maybe the idea of "language" itself would be revolutionized in the future. we would have something better. something that's like a meta language that we could translates all known language, and have their advantages. maybe we stop using machine waves through the air to communicate that much.

Gatekeeping is a real problem, but tests like the TOEFL are rarely about ethics. They're about resources. A genius Dutch computer scientist would not be able to demonstrate his/her understanding in English to a monolingual English speaker, and a university isn't going to hire a Dutch computer science professors and general education course professors for a small handful of students. The fees are exorbitant and are a completely different matter, which I agree should be addressed. When we get to 8:00, we're getting into Sapir-Whorf kinda stuff. Any language can think any thought, and language itself cannot prevent the progress of thought quite so easily. Those scientists were just stuck. The reason we're afraid of losing cultural knowledge when we lose a language is because that knowledge has never - to our knowledge - been translated into another language. If you can't access a language, you can't access what has been recorded exclusively in that language, either. We should celebrate diversity, and for practical reasons, that embracing of language needs to look like schools practicing good, sensible English as a foreign language teaching and policies. Provide bilingual education whenever possible, actively promote home cultures and languages in the English-language classroom, be conscious of students' backgrounds, and be sensitive to students' linguistic and academic needs. The problem the US is facing with ESL, for example, is one of resources. We've got tons of different languages, and we can't provide bilingual education across the US to every student of every language because we simply do not have the human resources to deal with it properly.

Western Universities should change their lens when looking at International students since it's not fair that because they don't have the TOEFL or IELTS exams, they are deprived of the chance of pursuing their higher education. The way I see it, these exams were made to squeeze International students so they can make money off their butts. I have met people who are very qualified in speaking, writing, reading, and understanding English, yet, they just happen to be bad at taking long duration tests, 2 hours + i.e. On the other hand, I have also met people who are not very qualified in the foregoing areas of English but still, they do good on TOEFL or IELTS. One more thing to add is that topics in these tests should be regarding your major in University. For instance, why on earth do I need to understand or answer a text in biology or chemistry and I am studying literature ?

I love the diversity of human language and am an avid learner of foreign languages. That statistic Ryan shows relating to languages dying off is scary - the death of any language is so sad. But...I'm an English teacher! So I feel as if I'm contributing to the extinction of languages! I can't sleep at night! 8;(

Definitely agree with the "don't insist" point, but at the same time I don't think we should shut off studying English, it is just we should encourage multilingual or, cherish research papers and information presented in other languages. Let the translator do their job, language should not be in the way of science and tech, and everything else.

I agree with her. The predominance of english will eventually lead to the death of all less known languages, probably. Although, english is indeed one very important language which should remain one important language to learn as well, once it has become so popular over the years. Language is culture and history. We can still learn english but keeps other languages along with their cultures in mind and study them in their respective native country.

Ideas to share require a common language. If you cant understand what others communicate you can not share it. English is the language most books and media translated and it gives a chance for people to learn some that is not available in his/her native language. What is easier to translate all knowledge into all languages or to use a common language to share knowledge? It is proven that change of language does not mean change of culture, however, diversity that limits the available knowledge due to access (language) is an adverse for any and all culture.
@thetruthalwaysscary

***** lol....are you serious? Dude this is common knowledge. All medical and most scientific discoveries automatically published in English. Now they print more English books in China than the following 5 languages together. I was in international trade that involved books but this I knew since I was a child. I am not interested to do a Google search for you but if you check the site about Library Of Congress I am sure you find some statistics. Also is the most learned language in the world is English. You don't have to believe it, the fact will not change.....

They've done this, and what happens is it turns into a natural-sounding language. Inconsistencies, idiomatic speech, irregular forms, etc. Plus, it's difficult for people to acquire naturally, anyway. Language is a social phenomenon and cannot be imposed from above.

If you were making the case that English shouldn't be required at universities in non-English speaking countries, that would be understandable. But if you're going to decide to go to university for four years in America, Britain, or Australia then obviously you'll need to learn English, and if you're to be treated as an equal you'll have to be judged by the same standards as the other students. Also if you're going to access educational material produced in English-speaking countries it's ridiculous not to expect the material to be in English --- as in China it would be in Chinese. I have plans to move to Germany, and guess what, I learned German.

She has a typical left wing ideological/anti modernist agenda, no interest in the development of the civilization and mankind- As everyone can see here and now on KZbin as we speak as ppl from all over the world (I am from Berlin for instance but use: English). For the mankind it is much more relevant that everyone understands each other than some anti modernist linguist ideologies. And it is really a simple IQ test to understand why it is cheaper/simpler/more efficient if everyone on the planet shares ONE language than any other combination. Does anyone expect that now 8 Billion. people learn 5000 languages? No. What happens if people learn a few languages? Then even with much more effort on resources/time/money you got LESS: still many combinations dont understand other ones. If you learn French, Polish and Greek then you fail already on the next who just only German, Chinese and Spanish - not to mention more complex variations. So, most intelligent is obviously: all share ONE language. And holding people on the planet back from the access to the most important databases, knowledge, most people, universities and so on just to support an ideological view is anti human/anti development/anti progress! So, other languages than English have to be a hobby or special interest - not to be any standard. And lets not forget: it is more important for most schools/universities to deal with their resources/time in a more efficient way - there are much more fields (natural science, economy etc.) which are for most people more important to know. Believing that 'adding more language skills' is automatically and a nice have is WRONG - if you had better invest into better skills at the same time! Last but not least: it makes sense to save for academic/scientific reasons all languages on the planet - via recording (creating databases), analyzing, dealing with it - as part of human knowledge. So, no problem if people are interested in that and if they want to learn another language. But also for this focus it is MUCH MORE efficient if again people can share over one language their knowledge and synchronize and put their time/money/resources on what really counts. And laster but not leaster: there is anyway no combination that not one language will be such a lingua france and new native language of the planet. This aspect has nothing to do with English. If English did not exist than it was another language but over the time it was one and not then, because most people will focus on what is necessary and useable. And exactly that is what most are doing - against ideologies. Many languages only exist because in old times when small groups spread over the planet, most lived at first isolated. Thats necessary to create a different language. For that time, lets say 5000-10000 years about 50000-100000 languages exist. Later at times of the Chinese, Persian, Greek and Roman it shrunk already down to something like 10000. Reason: more urbanization, globalization, bigger structures, often interlinked with others. The rest is simple: the more globalized the planet gets the less isolated space to keep languages alive - the more pressure for ppl to resynchronize/harmonize -- for simple everyday living reasons. Today there is no relevant isolated space anymore but its getting more and more globalized/urbanized/interlinked - and faster. Masses of people wandering between metropol areas from all over the world meet permanently other ones, connect, create relations and so on. No surprise that Berlin julst like Amsterdam ,Tel Aviv, Mumbai, Shanghai, Tokyo, Barcelona, Dubai, Captown and so on all have a local AND at the same time a global English speaking infrastructure - as part of the new global meta culture (I am at this very moment part of, just like everyone). Same in the internet/smartphone/tv-netflix, EU, UNO etc. etc. etc. And there is a reason why all of those multi lingual activists (actually a 19./20. imagination of the world) complain and publish mainly in English. Not many care if they dont do that. Does they learn from that? And behind all of this is a simple mechanisms of the reallity - unevitable ones! Has nothing to do with culture, a particular language and other things. So, a clever mankind could save a lot of money, sentiments and time if just recognizing such trivial things and doing what is necessary. And no, Chinese or Spanish or something else will not be the universal language - and not just due to the demographic trend, for tons of other reasons as well. Learning other languages is for inspired people who like doing that a good thing just like learning more about natural science history and so on - but not good as ideology.
