In this episode of Tuna on Toast, Stryker interviews Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg. Jim shares an array of stories from Pennywise history, from chaotic early shows, to landing their songs in surf videos (shoutout Greg Browning and Taylor Steele), to on-tour pranks. How did Brett Gurewittz from Bad Religion influence Pennywise? What was the early Southern California punk rock scene like? When did he know that Pennywise would be his life? Jim gives these stories and more. Over the years, Pennywise crossed paths with a long list of artists, and Jim mentions their history with Blink 182, The Offspring, No Doubt, Sublime and Fat Mike of NOFX (among others). Jim Lindberg was also hugely important to Warped Tour, and he tells Stryker all about its creation. Jim also talks about Pennywise’s late bassist, Jason Matthew Thirsk, discussing his impact as well as how the band moved forward after his death. The song “Bro Hymn (Tribute)” was rewritten following Jason’s passing, and Jim explores the legacy of the tune. Jim’s solo project, The Black Pacific, has a new album called ‘Here Comes Our Wave’, and he details its recording and how the songs came together. Jim even offers Stryker a glimpse at his life offstage, discussing fatherhood and his own childhood. Could Stryker be involved in the next Pennywise song? Be sure to listen to the end. I love this guy!… I got my punk rock baptism at a Pennywise, NoFx show when I was 12… I’m 43 now… Thank god for those surf and skate videos in the 90’s… Hell of a time to be in the second generation punk scene

Man, this was a trip down memory lane for me. I spent my high school years/mid 90's in a super small, isolated country town. My friends and I started skating and feasting on anything to do with the culture. One of us picked up a WARP mag and then started to absorb everything in it. We saw ads for Recipe for Hate and Unknown Road and I had no clue what they sounded like, but art looked awesome. My friend shows up at my house one day with Unknown Road and Generator and we sat down in my room and listened to them on repeat. That's the only type of music I listened to for the next ten/twenty years. Glad to see all my favorite bands growing up getting the recognition they deserve and that most are still kicking it today. Great interview.

We used to chase free PW shows on the 4th in Hermosa before we lost Jason. My whole life was marked by PW albums, I even married a girl named Penny, is that weird LOL? Jim is a class act of a human I appreciate everything he has created. Lyrics are a very powerful way to teach us ideas we may not know how to verbalize and I’m thankful for the wisdoms I’ve received.

I love Jim. Pennywise in my opinion is the best punk band in the World. They are Amazing! Much better than overrated nofx or awful Rancid. They are much much Better. But having children in this world is the most egoistic and cruel act ever! People are stupid and egoistic. Anyway i love this man, he is a very good person. An amazing Human beign

I absolutely love Pennywise and I absolutely love Jim, but I have to admit that I was taking back a little bit by the fact that he actually watches the news. You would think that a man with his intelligence would recognize that it’s purely propaganda and all bullshit..

Jim’s political views are antithetical to what he sings about. Dude is a joke, but his band is amazing.
