These cars are amazing. Their cell crash structure makes them one of the safest cars on the road. Don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise. I’ve got a buddy who slapped a Mazdaspeed3 Turbo on a Manual ‘16 model with some grippy tires, upgraded swaybar endlinks and some coilovers and he has no problem lapping much faster/bigger cars on the track, and not to mention knocks out 60MPH in around 6 seconds. These cars got really really good at the end of their life, which is why it’s so sad to see the stigma attached to them. I should add that I’m a Z/911 guy (I actually messaged you on Instagram offering to let you drive my Z32 TT), and I absolutely adore these.
@bubbleman20024 жыл бұрын
@@39PSIOnTheDaily A rigid chassis can kill. The car has no hood to have a crumple zone. Crumple zones dampen deceleration forces in the event of an accident. If there isn't anything to crumple, there can't be a crumple zone. I am sure the car retains its shape in an accident, but could the same be said for the driver or their insides if they go from 40 miles per hour to 0 in less than a quarter of a second? Then again, the car's very light weight allows it to stop quickly, reducing the impact speed, somewhat reducing the need for crumple zones.

I’m pushing for a 6.2L Merc SL as my next car but I had one of these and I always tell people that even the G-wagon isn’t as gangster as the MK2 Smart ForTwo. If it’s not a parking space IT’S A PARKING SPACE. And the handling is soooo lively through twisty English countryside B roads! It will scare you, it will teach you, it will steal your heart and put hair on your chest if you dare to drive it hard.

You liked it? I’m so pleased, especially from an American. We have the turbo in the U.K., which I guess that is? Soooo much fun. We get 53mpg (UKGallons) average. Cruises at 80 on the motorway with some left, brilliant in the city. Much improved suspension and gearbox over the previous iteration. Many smiles per mile. We love it.

Excellent review! Im actually a really big fan of this generation of smart car. The revisions Mercedes made to it over previous generations really allowed it to live up to its potential. Unfortunate that Smart is gone completely as a brand in the US now.

Wow! When you had that U turn you still have that extra meter, i mean you actually had over turn it and needed to steer back it a little in order to keep it in track, i think it has a 3.5 or 4 turning radius. Very nice to watch. 😊

My first car was a 1st gen smart and I would take it on the highways/freeways semi frequently. The only time I was worried was during a high rain/high wind storm when I tried to pass a semi during crosswinds. That was scary. Everything else was just fun. Someday I'll get another!

My son has a 2011 Smart Passion and it really is fun to drive. We drove it from PEI to Ontario no problem. It did fine on the highway. Even ended up doing some unintended mud running in New Brunswick due to road closures and detours caused by flooding. It did OK in the mud. One issue is not just any shop can fix this car. They are a strange design and unless you are adventurous and like to do your own repairs you need to have a Smart Center near by. They do have a bit of a reputation for being unreliable and expensive to repair hence I have had to do some repairs myself. Fortunately there are some good Smart forums around that really help.

A american guy who got currious about the smart. man i was living in Berlin they got them there as Car2Go back then... i drove the predisessor and this ... and i love them in the city traffic... cute, small, super on gas... they even had a full "E" version of this thing... incredible car and by FAR underrated.

I bought one of these to tow with my RV. It has a convenient 6S mode that puts it in a towing mode for 4-down tow ability. My wife and I really feel like we are in a regular car when we drive around. It’s just missing the back end! It’s a peppy car (as you noted) and it is perfect for our use case. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get parts in the US and except for basic maintenance work, I’m finding it harder to get repairs. It’s too bad they were discontinued in the US. An yes - the turning radius is crazy!!! I think I can turn around in my driveway or garage.

I always had a strange affinity for these things, I just really love small and light weight. When I raced Motocross, 125cc two strokes wee my absolute favorite; when I roadraced, small lightweight two strokes were always the best...or V-Twins like my beloved SV650 track bike....600cc sport bikes were pigs to me. And the same with cars, love my FRS👍. I can just imagine how cool this car would be with a GSXR1000 engine and gear box in it😍😍😍😍

I own a 2010 model Smart car I enjoy every minute of driving what sold me on this car was a English TV motor show called 5th gear. They do a crash test at 70 MPH into two motorway barriers and you could still open both doors. I have done several long distant trips of over 400miles and found it really comfortable and my neck pain did not occur like other cars.

These are brilliant cars, this generation of Smart fortwo was developed with Renault, there is a longer four seat version called the For four which was the same as the Renault Twingo. I had a Twingo for over 3 years and it's an excellent car, the Engine which is a Renault designed engine is 900cc turbo engine, apart from some turbo lag when cold it's a lovely punchy engine, under the front hood is the battery, washer fluids, brake fluids and the crash structure. It's happily happily cruse at 70mph. It's an absolute hoot to drive and my Twingo was a 5 speed manual. Brilliant fun chucking down a twisty road.

You can rent these in Berlin for 0,26€ per minute. These are very convenient if you have to find a parking spot in a city.
@rogerfroud300 Жыл бұрын
Smart Cars are way more fun to drive than most cars. They're hugely capable and practical. If you don't need four seats, this is a great choice. It's so cheap to run, insurance is really low and in the UK, the Vehicle tax is almost nothing.
