Have to mention that the Hornet is based off of the Tonale, not the other way around. In addition the Tonale has a total of 285hp split between the gas engine and electric motor.

yeah and it's a really good platform. It's the DaimlerChrysler/Mitsubishi GS platform so it's ridged and sporty. Also aside from the actual under body the tonale/ hornet share nothing with it's predecessors on the *platform*.

I love the tonale, but it’s such a shame Stellantis badge engineered it and rebadged it as a Dodge. Alfas are supposed to be exclusive and exquisite, not rebadged as a dodge…

Alfa, at least in the US has never really been exclusive or exquisite. Also this isn’t the first time Alfa has provided a base for a Dodge vehicle, see the Dart. Unfortunately for Alfa this was necessary since they don’t have the sales in the US to justify it being a standalone vehicle.

This is a great review! I really like how you gave such a different view of the Tonale. It was an enthusiast style review that talks about the car as a vehicle to be pushed and driven well. But instead of focusing on granular track data and comparisons to other cars, you focused on articulating how it felt to actually drive. Finding enthusiast qualities within something as normal as a modern PHEV crossover while capturing how it feels to drive makes for an excellent watch.

As someone who works in a Chrysler dealership, I have to say, be careful with these. I've seen more brand new, off the truck Hornets and Tonales with dashboards lit up so bad that it'd make early 2000's BMW proud than I care to admit.

Alfa Romeo have always done brilliant small engines. This looks to have better build quality than Alfas in the past - that has always been an issue with them. Also, those paddles probably did come off a 458 Italia - part of Ferrari, FIAT and Alfa parts-bin!

Alfa have stopped producing their own engines in 2006. All of their engines now are Fiat, and Ferrari for the Giulia QV/ Stelvio QV.

​@@user-sy1ed9ex5m The 2.0 and 2.9 engines of the Giulia are produced in the Termoli plant of Alfa Romeo. The fact that 2.0 is used also in other brands (Jeep wrangler afaik) doesn't change the fact they are Alfa engines.

It's fun to me that it seems to be kinda like the first PHEV you drive as an automotive guy. Here in Europe they are already all over the place. The Mercedes GLC has a range of over 60 miles purely in EV mode. Not saying that's a must do, but for people who can't charge at home that saves them a lot of troubles.

I have a Giulia and I don’t mind the reach around the paddles for the blinker stalk, what is annoying though is burning your knuckles on the aluminum paddles on hot summer days lol

I am looking for a PHEV for my next car, AR is the only dealership I visited that doesn’t have any markups! For that alone, I will be putting it on my list. Visiting Toyota and Hyundai/KIA dealerships are such turn off, they have huge markups, sales people with attitudes, and some of them even hide their inventory so they can tell you nothing is available and you must pay the markup to special order.

if only this exact powertrain was in something much smaller, like the Giulietta (Type 940) that ended in 2020 and never made it here. I love PHEVs, but they're always packaged into much larger and boring cars. I love hot hatches, and I wish cars like the Golf and Mazda3 were far more popular than they are.
