@@guguigugu I’m an American, but I’ve spent lots of time in Sweden and Norway because I have relatives there, and you don’t see that many obese people (and Scandinavians eat a lot, just not like pigs, and there are laws against most chemicals that Americans load their foods and soft drinks with which cause obesity and disease). I’ve gone to Italy many times, and despite their love of pastas, cheeses, wines, and pastries, you don’t see many obese people. Usually when you see really fat people in Europe they’re American or Canadian tourists. Keep in mind that people in Europe, especially in cities, walk a lot more than Americans, and most of Italy is hilly or mountainous so you really get a workout just walking. The first thing you notice when you arrive at an airport in the US from other countries is the incredible amount of obese people. There was a time when you had to go to a circus to see people that fat. I live in Connecticut and a married couple who live next door to me each weight over 300 pounds, and have a Mazda MX-5 Miata and a Fiat 500. It’s impossible not to stare. If you want a good laugh on this topic, watch the video on KZbin titled: “George Carlin Dumb Americans”, it’s raunchy but it’s extremely accurate.

Cheap and charming. This was that simple car that kept going forever. Cars like this 500 and my father’s 1968 Beetle are measured in smiles per gallon. Emotional attachment because this 500 isn’t powerful, isn’t roomy, but 500 is doing its best for you and you adore 500 for that.

Fiat always had a way of maximizing fun with very small cars. I’ve driven dozens of different Fiats, and they’re never dull. The most enjoyable Fiat I’ve driven, and owned, was a 1977 128 sport coupe (yellow with black racing stripes). It was a very pretty car, and it handled incredibly well. It was a quick little car, and because of it’s size, you always felt like you were going much faster than you were. It was one of those cars that always had you taking the long way home.

Exactly. It’s proof that you don’t need eleventy-bajillion horsepower to have huge amounts of fun behind the wheel. As James May once said during his Fiat Panda review in Series 18 of Top Gear, “it’s not actually about how much power you have, it’s about how much power you can use.” …and cue all the young, immature Ferrari/Lamborghini fanboys - who likely aren’t even of legal driving age - who will probably disagree with that statement.

1:41 i believe you can actually open the roof all the way as there are two hinges - so it's kind of a bi-fold motion. As you lift the from the handle with one hand, you push the middle cross bar up and backwards so it folds neatly on itself behind you.

I learned to drive on a modern car, but bought a 1971 500L as my first car. It’s actually amazing to drive and puts a smile on the face of everyone in the streets and in the car. It can technically hold 4 people, but I suggest 3 at maximum; Driving this beautiful tin can with two friends is the definition of joy, great vid!

I was in Rome for 3 days in February 2017. Those cars are still everywhere in everyday use and do just FINE on tight Italian town roads. I saw literally over 50 of them, on the road, in daily use, including 4 wagons (Giardiniera)

That's the spirit! You really feel the drive , every meter of it, on a 500 🙂. It is like driving a dream toy car, but it is real. Funniest drive in my life. All the former owners I met (and in Italy there are a bunch of them) have fond memories of it. Until recently there was almost a million of them still roaming around everywhere in Italy but now pollution laws and special deals offered to those that scrap old cars sadly gutted their numbers.

That tailpipe is correct shape, it went out of factory like that. It could go all the way to 60 mph, but there was also an epic Abarth version, it could duke it out with Mini Coopers any time. Actually it wasn't very fuel efficient though, it is carburetor fed after all.

This brings back so many happy memories. This is the first car I ever drove aged 15. My friend bought one & a land owner said we could park it on his land. We used to drive it around his little track until the neighbours complained about the noise and he said we had to move the car. None of us had a driver’s license so the car was sadly scrapped 🥲. I always think about that little car every now & then & it brings a smile to my face. 🙂

I have been owner of a '73 500 R (last series) for the last year. Bought on 12th may 2021 and use it as daily driver. Fiat 500 wasn't really the car I was aiming to, but I slowly fell in love with her. When I bought it, the body was restored, but the engine needed some work. Turned out that the block was cracked in 3 behind the flywheel. Since the 126A5000 (for the 500R) engine is the rarest I swapped a 126A000 and with some little tuning, now it has 24 hp and 43Nm of torque. The R also has longer gear ratios than the predecessors, top speed (measured with the gps) is 125 km/h, compared to the 100 of the stock engine. Bought it with 88,9 k ish km, now it has 98044 km. And now I can affirm I love her, and that's really reliable

In the early '60s my Dad had a Fiat 600, the 500s "big brother". I drove it in high school. This 600 was special as it had a lot of Abarth components, especially headers and exhaust and was very loud. It was so fun to drive especially when I took it to the the local drive in (restaurant) everybody would turn around to see what ferocious beast was coming in only realize it was this little tiny car. Then they would start laughing. It never got old.

A classmate at school here in NZ in 1971 had one.His parents had a new orange Fiat 850 sport fastback.That was a cool car.The import duty on European cars at that time was about 45% due to the preferential tariff for British cars.Even so lots of people were driving Fiats and Alfa Romeos.The Fiat 124 sport was a popular and very stylish car too.

Dear Tedward, as a fan of your videos, I have followed your achievement becoming a better driver and I really appriciate it. Your videos inspirated me to buy a Miata (MX-5 here in Hungary, Europe) 5 years ago and I didn' t regret it at all! But this time please let me give you some advice on the basis of this particular Fiat 500 video. You master double clutching when upshifting but downshift is another story. You need to revmatch when you release the clutch (because you have to spin up the gearbox with the help of the crankshaft), then you push the clutch one more time and find the gear. So "clutch - release - revmatch - clutch - into gear" is the point. I love this technique, you can save your cold gearbox from wearing out and it gives you a fantastic rhytm when downshifting, like dancing on the pedals. Yes, but horsepower means the constant achievement, not just for seconds but even a day long. A good cycle racer can do 1500 Watt when starting (2 hp) or more but this is not the constant power that cars can give e.g. for one hour's time (with other words: even racing horses get tired while combustion engines work all day with the same power).

6:33 Clutch up, revs up, clutch down and then it goes in! If you put the clutch in as you're blipping, it will crunch, that's just how it is! We had a Bianchina at our house (that's the "luxury", "sedan" version of this made by Autobianchi in the 1957-1969 period) and - apart from the exterior line - it's the same in every aspect...that's why I know! I love them though, they are just so elegant and so characterful! :)

Awesome vid! Thanks for making a great vid showing the true charm of the 500. I got bit by the 500 bug a few years ago, and currently restoring a 67 500F. A few tidbits of info for like minded folks from my experience. If you do plan to enjoy a 500 in North American traffic it is best to spend a bit and invest in some engine upgrades, either a 650 fiat 126 engine upgrade, or going with a 650-750cc engine upgrade, getting this little motor upto 30 hp really livens up the experience, and tied with a 5speed upgrade makes it easily blend in with hwy traffic if you dare. - The exhaust pipe was like that from factory -this car seems to have a alternator upgrade, hard to tell if its just the alternator or had 650 cc 126 upgrade, only the stamping on the block will tell. -don't hesitate to rev the motor, these little sewing machines in stock form will happily rev to 5500-6000rpm as long as they are in good condition. -they are a blast to drive, and definitely should be a bucket list experience for any auto enthusiast. The simplicity and overall experience is definitely unique and brings you back to reality when cars were simple people movers, but with charm.

The exhaust pipe's squashed end was probably like that out of the factory, because throughout the production run of Polish Fiat 126p (... which was a licensed copy of the successor of Fiat 500 ...) those had similarly squashed exhaust ends. Which would suggest it meant to serve some purpose, but I don't know what that purpose was. Perhaps, indeed, it was meant to optimize the flow dynamics of exhaust gases.

It should have synchro on all but first gear! I have a Fiat 600D which is a 4-cylinder water-cooled version of this car. The Fiat 600 was introduced before the 500, produced in greater numbers, and is much better looking. But for some reason the 500 gets all the publicity.

Fiat 600 has the synchro on all but first, while on the newer model Fiat 500 they decided not to include synchros, as it could be driven without. It is quite an opposite of what happened in the USA where they moved the non-synchronized transmission to aided power shifters, semi and automatic transmission. It might be hard to understand to someone outside of Europe/Italy, but that move made this car simpler and easier to maintain by yourself by buying spare parts in the local supermarkets :) It is also valid for other Fiat models (Fiat Ritmo, Uno...) and some other derivatives, such as Yugo, and they were never successful in the USA, as the perception and "car culture" were completely different. I live in Trieste now, and there are still many Fiat 500 and Fiat 126 buzzing around and people use them for daily driving. The city is on hills with some very narrow streets, and believe it or not, they do better than most of the bigger cars because of their size :)

I love that it has an air-cooled twin cylinder 499cc engine with 18hp, whereas my Royal Enfield 349cc air-cooled single cylinder makes 20hp 😆 That said these are super cool and I would love to own one, maybe an Abarth version though.

Worst pedal box that I've ever experienced is the ferrari 348. Like no room. The Maserati QP V pedals are super strange too. The gas and brake pedals are exactly the same height and very close together. So when you first drive it, you hit both lol.

Nice exemplar, almost original in every detail. Only the engine is the most powerful 650 cc 24 hp from the later fiat 126. It features alternator instead dinamo and 28 carburettor with resin elbow. Perhaps also the gearbox is the 126 with 2-3-4 sinchro.
