To the musician, ears are the mirror to the soul. "The most important things I say in my life may well be whispered," said Carl St. Clair about musical innovation.
The conductor demonstrates how by whispering honest feedback and direction, he encourages musicians to create exceptional music that mirrors their souls and deliver a level of performance that is exceptional and awe-inspiring.
Carl St. Clair celebrates his 21st season as Musical Director of the Pacific Symphony in Orange County. During his tenure, he has become widely recognized for his musically distinguished performances, his commitment to building outstanding educational programs and his innovative approaches to programming.
A strong advocate of music education for all ages, he has been essential to the creation and implementation of the symphony education programs including Classical Connections, arts-X-press and Class Act. Carl's commitment to the development and performance of new works by American composers is evident in the commissions and recordings by the Pacific Symphony.
About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

Thank you Carl, I miss the times I spent with you in rehearsal, in your office and at home. You have been a great influence in my music making, as a player and as a conductor. Forever thankful for our time together.

I sing in the Pacific Chorale, and we collaborate with Carl and the Pacific Symphony frequently. He is a joy to work under, and an inspiration. But when he shared about the "cycle" of emotion that he gives to the musicians, and they respond to him - that is very true. Those of us in the Chorale find that we are energized by him, and we give that back to him.

Today was the last concert with Carl St. Clair as principal conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Costa Rica. The last piece of the concert was Beethoven`s Fifth Symphony, and it was wonderful!

This man is a human metronome with a thousand silly distorted facial expressions that magically convey music direction to the orchestra. Only the orchestra and people sitting in the choral seats can really appreciate this man.

"It's silent and probably spends most of it's life in the dark." Yeah, that line got me.

It is a great joy to hear Maestro St. Clair share his life passion - conducting great music of the masters. He connects so beautifully with people, with life and his biggest gift I believe is opening the minds and hearts of young artists. I have known him for over 30 years, and his honesty with music drives his passion. We are fortunate to have him conduct occasionally in Texas (his home). I wish he would share a few live performances of him conducting his orchestra on you tube. Bravo maestro!

Thank you for sharing this link with us, Tresa! What an inspiration. Now the challenge for us mentors is how to become Inside-in music educators.

For all of those observers who think conducting is merely standing on a box and waving the arms. And a great inspiration for this teacher who sometimes feels she is alone in her methods of trying to get her students to experience the music within.

What about an outside-in conductor? WHAT ABOUT AN OUTSIDE-IN CONDUCTOR?? What is the meaning of the implied fourth term?? I won't be getting much sleep tonight.
