I m not too sure why there are so many negative comments. I can certainly relate a lot to her speech and i come from a normal family, a fob, recently gave up the job i love for a better salary and I regret it every single day. Her speech reminds me what I need to look for in life, it isn’t about better salary, it’s about knowing what you love and do what you love.

I understand why she is excited about this job as a travel show host. She is YOUNG, PRETTY with a DREAM JOB.. The real question is: will she be as passionate when she turns forty, gets fugly and no one wants to give her this kind of opportunity any more... THAT, is the question, and what I would like to see... But I believe she will still be happier than most people because she seems to have a built-in positive outlook on life. and that will be her saving grace. Wishing her every success and a happy relationship with George Young !!

Well, I'm 41 going on 42. Not quite yet fugly, but definitely saggier in places that shouldn't sag. Happy to say that I am still pretty darn excited and passionate about work, family and just life in general. (Phew!)

As an Asian American, I feel all the things coming out her mouth sounds like... an over privileged kid. Passion is great, if that is something you can afford to pursue. Becoming a model is great, if you were dealt a great card at birth. Being able to make mistakes, explore and conquer your life goals is great, if you can actually afford such nuances without paying the price of failures along the way. Thank you for reminding the rest of us that being tall, gorgeous, and full of opportunities that your parents and network can give you is something that not all of us are given or can risk striving for. Risk, risk mainly is something that privileged people can take. For the rest of us, "play" "make a living out of play" "do what you are passionate about", this type of reward from taking risks is much harder to come across if each failure is so much heavier than failures for privileged kids who swear life is all about chasing passion. "You don't have to work a single day of your life"? Hmm I guess you really must be so privileged. Good job.
@slowfish299 жыл бұрын
Joseph Hsiao so true....I know I would come across as "bitter/ jealous" (well yes I am jealous) for saying this, but having this kind of privileges to "do what you love, follow your passion" is all bs. It does not apply to normal people the same way, we can make it happen but will take us much more time and much more effort to achieve "passion" path.
@xxbengxx18 жыл бұрын
agree... Not inspiring at all. Used to find her OK until seeing this. she's tried way too hard in talking about her privileges other than her own true doings. fail on her....

thanks for the message, we don't need someone else to tell us how to enjoy our life or waste time envying someone else's wonderful life. Stand up leave you chair and do something. Then you will realize you are privileged. Just do it man (the purpose of typing this one is to program myself ^^)

Not that I disagree with any of the comments shared so far, but.... I personally think humor is the way to go, regardless of who you see that is receiving it, that it may be lost on them, as you are not counting yourself and others that TEDx is really focused on. I see TEDx XXX as a communal dialogue that reaches people beyond just 'me'. And as in beyond 'me', I mean other people different than me. That may even understand and appreciate what she says even better than just me.
@Stephanie-ne3bt9 жыл бұрын
Pursuing modeling over medicine must have really seemed like a gigantic risk for her initially, but she got to where she is now because of the network it created. And I think that's the main lesson she's trying to convey. Listen to your heart, the most pragmatic decisions in life aren't always the best ones. It may seem crazy now, but it will eventually lead to something good - if you really are following your passion. I've heard better Ted Talks (Cameron Russel, i.e.), and although the main point here may indeed be buried by prolonged ramblings of living the dream job and background introductions, I still like Janet. I believe her positivity is a largely uncredited factor of her success. The main focus of this talk may be unemphasized and barely discernible, but you'll see it if you squint. Oh, and nice legs! *wink*

you're overreacting. very likely the audience was told that the talk would be in english while they were getting the ticket. and also it's very likely that janet was given the permission from Tedx to give a lecture in english. no big deal~

well, as being a ESL Taiwanese I found that some of the sense of humor became stuck between Taiwanese and American culture. Indeed, that's a whole lots difference between these two countries but I personally think Janet is a good speech giver, but the audience tend to be none sense of humor. I don't blame on those people but its all because thats how Taiwanese being trained. And if you trying to analyze those behaviors they have, its not hard to tell this country need serious help!
@JS-nf8ue8 жыл бұрын
i don't understand why being an ESL taiwanese leads you to blame non english speaking taiwanese's inability to understand american humor on the "training" they get
I believe that's a stereotype on Japanese speaking English. Cantonese and Mandarin speakers articulate L's and R's just fine. Because...it's in the language aight?
