I study nursing at the university and this is my first year. one of my teachers said that being a nurse means that you have the biggest responsibility and the most limited power. she also said that being a nurse means that you will have the chance to experience peoples happiest and most horrible times of their lives. but she hasnt regretted being a nurse herself. even if I study nursing I don't consider myself as one. you need to spend years to become one. but above all if you want to become a good nurse you need to be HUMAN first.

I've been at my job for a month and especially the first week or two I really was sooooo focused on doing the procedures right (such as hanging the IV properly or giving the med properly) that there was really no room to be all friendly with the patient and chat with them. I was too busy focusing on not trying to kill them! lol. I've been working there for a month and it's gotten better with certain things but there are still SOOOO many things I don't know that I need to focus hard on.

I love your description of how people perceive nurses. As a male nurse, this is extremely looked down upon because men should be the doctors, according to my patients. If people could see what I see and experience all that I have, maybe they would understand my reasoning for choosing nursing. And the path to my degree had lots of curves I did not plan on. With all that has happened to me, I will proclaim loudly and proudly claim that "I am an nurse."

i been a RN for 5 months now. this is by far the most stressful job i ever had. i still feel like i know nothing. you call doctors and they dont know a thing about your patient because they got who know how many more. one night i had 5 out my 6 patients crash at once. one was bleeding from a surgery, another couldnt breath and kept taking her bipap off, another with a clog peg tube, another one a 90 year old lady vomiting and diarrhea. i took care of all these patients and made sure they lived. i knew what was wrong with them and kept going back and forth room by room. but i didnt get time to read the progress notes or all the details of the patient. i didnt get a chance to make a proper report. 5 patients crashing at once is stressful. so the doctor came and ask questions about the patient with bleeding surgery. i couldnt answer probably the family member said i was a horrible nurse and new nothing about the patient. that ruin my day i wanted to quit right there nursing is not easy. there are times that is rewarding but there times i wonder why i am a nurse. i do care for my patients i want to be a good nurse but there is so much that is expected from you. nursing is one of the hardest profession in the world

As a nurse, you hear stories of the good and the bad. You hear nurses complain about the pay and how stressful the job may be. You get to work and nothing goes according to plan, no day is the same. As a nurse, one thing you must never forget is WHY you became a nurse in the first place!!!! If it was for the money, you just shot yourself in the foot. If it was because everyone else is doing it, you won’t last too long... you must truly figure out your WHY in order to last in a field as a nurse. Not only that, think about that your super power is! What makes you you? What makes you stand out from the other nurses? What do you bring to the table that no one else can offer? What about you can you leave with each and every patient you come in contact with? Nursing isn’t a job for me, nursing is a calling! I’m not pursuing it for money, nor am I pursuing it to be stress free. I am a nurse because I want to be more like Christ. I want to serve others and make a difference in the world one patient at a time. It’s a purpose in my work, in my drive, in me showing up to my floor everyday. There’s purpose in what I do, my WHY is what drives me daily and even if the day gets hard, my WHY reminds me of why I got started and it reminds me of the struggle Jesus had to endure to save a ranch like me.... so you have to figure it out and if nursing isn’t for you, don’t waste any more time, figure out what’s for you and pursue it 100%. I want to eventually become a doctor so I can primarily help diagnose and treat patients, but I want to start my career, and gain valuable experience, with nursing for exactly the same reason. I have been a nurse for a long time. I worked on the floor, as a manager and as an educator in nursing. I personally find this approach as a nurse is not very helpful. When nurses see the profession as a "calling", often they put up with too much. When we can see it just as a job, that's when people are able to put healthy boundaries between them and the job, and look after themselves too. Also, they can demand the rights that they usually would in other working environments. I feel like picturing nursing in altruistic way end up giving nurses standards that is unrealistic and make them burn out quicker. Nurses should not be seen as angels or saviours, but just other humans working very hard, with limitations.

There are so many different ways to help people so look at all your options and really figure out what your passion is and then go for it. Check out your community college and find out if they have a part-time nursing program or just a full-time nursing program and what they require. Thank you for your enlightening talk!! I am currently a critical care nurse; however, my first degree was a BA in theatre and dance. For many years I was a Broadway performer and at that time I could have never imagined my eventual path into the field of nursing. Due to my liberal arts background, I have always envisioned myself as an outsider in the hospital setting, as I see the world and the human condition through an alternate lens compared to many of my peers. I used to believe my abilities and worth as an RN were tethered to skills like inserting Foley catheters, IVs, titrating drips, etc.... but I have since learned that my main asset is the ability to communicate with and relate to others. This is not something I was taught in nursing school, rather it was realized through years of life experience. This career has humbled me to the Nth degree and left me with a deep realization that the human experience is beyond fragile. Somedays, it is very apparent that listening and actively communicating with a patient is by far the most powerful medicine they will receive during the course of their stay.

If you don't have a deep love to care or listen to people then maybe it's not for you. Try it. Shadow a nurse and see what it's like. Nurses heal people. We do so by first physically healing, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

Am a Enrolled Nurse in Australia and am currently studying my RN's. Have been working in health care as an assistant in nursing since age of 16, growing up in my later teens surrounded by people require 24/7 care has shaped me as a person. Holding the hand of someone in pain or dying is one of the most powerful moments of my life, being there for them, being able to help ease the pain, for them not to be alone. Some days it is hard, it is hard emotionally to do. But being a Nurse isn't a choice, it is a calling. Would never want to be a dr who just diagnoses and then leaves the patient, it is us Nurses whom stay by the patient and do the real miracle of healing. Sana Goldberg it took a lot of courage to disclose your sexuality in your talk, and for that I am thankful. You speak honest and truthful.

The comment section is very heart warming. I am a nurse from the Philippines and my destiny brought me to USA. I was trying to avoid the health care in the u.s as my 1st job was working as a laundry attendant in a nursing home. I've seen things I might not wanted in my life. Bounced from jobs to jobs and then my destiny bought me back to my calling. I passed my nclex exam and working as an RN in the same nursing home where everything started. @@melopsicodelia No it’s not. She became an RN. It’s way more stressful to become an RN via an accelerated program than a four year program. Many who do a four year program would not make it through an intense one year program - the shorter program takes a higher level of academic skill and study to get through.

I will be 62 next month and came to nursing early last year in a graduate entry program. I love working with people i care for, but i have found some nurses treat students poorly. I have had excellent buddy nurses and preceptors too from whom i have learned so much. Everyone has something to offer and life experience can be highly advantageous.

To the people dissing CNA’s ... When I worked at my hospital as an Acute Care Tech (very similar to a CNA) we took vitals, assisted feeding patients, cleaned them, changed their briefs, emptied foleys and colostomy bags, assisted in changing dressings, ran codes alongside doctors and RN’s and LPN’s, checked blood glucose, comforted patients and families when the worst was realized, bring them water and food when they cannot, and so much more. There are amazing nurses assistants and awful ones, but that is based on the content of that persons CHARACTER and not a representation of nurses assistants as a whole. Hospitals should reprimand lazy employees, PERIOD, despite what positions they may hold.

You have to figure out why you want to become a nurse, what is your why? It might take time to figure it out, and it might not be something easily put into words, but the most important thing is that it motivates you. For me it's having an impact on people's lives every day. It's getting past the small talk, where vulnerability and humanity is visible that keeps me sane in regards to this crazy world. It's being for someone, anyone. Don't forget to take care of yourself as well. Nursing is hard for sure, but it's very giving.

I am a nurse, for more than a decade already, caring is inherent quality as human being. Its a good feeling to help, however being a nurse under high work pressure is not healthy for any nurses. Our soceity expect high quality nurses, difficult studies and continuing education we need to undergo to be the best nurse. However the reality in the workfloor if confrontering, lesser staffs leading to high risk of patient neglects even death. WE want to do our job well, but ratio on patient-nurse care is ultimate importance to deliver care. If the governments dont recognize this problem, maybe better to develop a robot with a physical strengths to carry , lifts patients, but a soft side with a heart like a real human nurse, we are living in a modern world, maybe that is the future of healthcare. it seems modernism is taking away realities of the necessities of healthcare .

AwokenLion , it's changed. When I was an RN in the 70s we were treated with respect by management and the public. It has totally changed now and it started in the 80s with the cost of healthcare going up. We got disrespected by management and made to feel like a burden to them financially. Now we are treated as servants, at least that's how it is where I worked.

I graduated high school early at 16, went straight into an ADN program and graduated with my RN at 18, started working as a nurse while in my free time going through an RN-BSN program. I’m currently 21 and have now been a nurse for 3 years. It is HARD! It’s hard being short staffed and having a dangerous patient to nurse ratio... it’s hard when you have one patient crashing while another is screaming at you to get them ice, juice, extra pillows etc... it’s hard when you constantly deal with abuse from patients, it’s hard when your working a 12 hr shift that turns into an 18 hr shift bc someone called in... it’s hard having to critically think literally every single minute of your 12+hr shift bc if you slack even for one minute you could loose your job & license to work... it’s hard when you literally do everything for the patients, and the doctors get all of the credit when in reality most of them don’t do sh*t... nursing is hard, it’s not glamorous, and it will test you in ways you can’t imagine.

I would never recommend nursing to anyone I really care about. I'm glad I myself am the example so my sister and future children will never think twice about entering the field. It's stress. Documentation, lifting, exposure to pathogens, verbal abuse from colleagues, patients and visitors, etc. And trust me, there's more. As a nurse, you wear too many hats - you're the nurse, pharmacist, RT, dietary, PT/OT, wound care, etc. And you have to know that you're responsible for knowing how to do all these things required of you and stay within your own scope as a nurse. There's too much working against you, yet too much on your shoulders and when things go wrong, no ones there to back you. And then while you have all this on your mind, management wants you do whatever you have to do to improve "patient satisfaction." It's a terrible choice to go this route. Stay away if you're doubting it at all.

What the heck is this lady talking about. I don't have a clue. In addition, why does one comment after another talk nothing about how stressful the job is? Can this stress be because people today can't handle stress? I am considering becoming and LPN because of the short training and decent pay. I'm 58 and went through divorce after a lifetime homemaker and have a daughter with autism. I do like fast paced environments. I worked as a personal care associate for people with mental disabilities. It was not all fun, like getting thrown up on, however, I enjoyed working with the clients.

I am 52kilo and everyday I need to wash 136 kilo patient who can barely move and need to be push in a wheelchair. Aside from 3 others . I feel I can’t get out of the profession cause I don’t know what else to do or how to earn in other means. I feel depressed but I have to go on be strong because I still need to care my kids at home.
