It's all school; Takes away our time from creativity, makes us care more about our marks in a paper, makes us chase government jobs when there are other jobs we can do. This is extremely true. One example: My brother is amazing at art. He's super talented, but he keeps getting Cs and Ds in art because he doesn't do what hes told. He challenges the teachers. There are people in his class who jave absolutely no skill, but get higher grades because the do exactly what they are told and don't think outside the box. The teachers are literally trying in limit children creativity *in an art room*

So much for the whole point of art eh! Also, so much for school. If your brother loves art and is super-talented as you put it, he's probably not going to want to be a schoolteacher or a tax lawyer when he grows up, so what's he doing wasting his time in public school, which is designed specifically to turn people into 100% obedient robots, whereas expressive art is supposed to make people be/feel more human and less robotic and zombie-like?

@d R In all fairness, the greatest artists started out with imitation and repetition because that's how a skill set starts developing in the beginning. It's just that the best ones were able to 'run with it' rather than spending lots of time perfecting their imitation. They get what they need, and then start applying their own creativity.

As a high school social studies teacher it's sad that I observe that. All the students that come into my class from previous schools and whatnot all behave the same. Afraid to answer a question or give a new or creative idea. I spend a lot of my time trying to undo that damage and get them comfortable enough with my classroom and their peers to be able to try new things and not be "afraid to fail" as it has come to be. I've had too many students try to tell me to just give the information to pass the test and that's it. Where did this behavior get learned? The 16 year old in this video does bring a valid point to the debate table and your point only reinforces it.

@@kyleshubert2863 As a middle schooler, I think it's the grading system. For a lot of places a standardized test is %45 (or more) of your grade. We're afraid of failure or being wrong no matter what because the grade that is automatically forced onto us. If we don't know it, the teacher might think less of us and give us a lower grade. I think that starts from the fact that standardized tests are meant to show how much you memorized or didn't memorize, rather than how much you learn from what you knew before.

Or if by mistake I didn't understand what the teacher asked us to do, if I ask her again the teacher will go mad at me, be like "Why don't you pay attention?". This makes asking questions harder and that makes it impossible for students to learn things.
@6xmaaaa
@6xmaaaa 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason why I don’t raise my hand that often other than maths ( maths is easy af ) is because the teacher would make fun of me. For eg. In science I raised my hand because I was still confused and my teacher just ignored me. My arm got tired so I put my hand down and then a few minutes later my teacher picked me. I WAS ANGRYY ASF. He asked me a question even though I raised my hand he didn’t care he just started shouting at me that I wasn’t paying any attention. So I just left the room. They called my parents and they got mad at me. ALL BECAUSE OF MY SCIENCE TEACHER. HE WAS ENJOYING IT. SO THATS THE MAIN REASON WHY I DONT RAISE MY HAND THAT OFTEN. I’m 15 and I hate school. During my freshman year, my schedule was 8:30AM-6:00PM with sports. I can agree with literally everything he said. I’ve found my meaning and I’ve been following it for over a year now. I’ve learned much more browsing the internet than at school. And I don’t know if it’s just me, but i am learning literally like 10x faster myself than at school. And I'm learning things that can actually change and impact the world supposed to learning about how the ancient Romans harvested food for over 3.5 hours a week.

My dad once explained to me that if I got good grades all the time, and if I already knew everything, I'd feel like there'd be no more room to grow or improve myself, so he taught me to always use a bad grade or report as a learning experience. That's very true and insightful, but why does my C in algebra and chemistry make me feel and look like a failure if all I need to do is "do better?" I can't even really find what it is I'm doing wrong with my work, and I'm constantly trying to play catch up so that I can at least understand what the rest of the kids in my class are talking about, and I find myself sacrificing my time to do what I really love and want to pursue, like drawing and music, because I feel a constant desire to not "fail" all my classes. Maybe it's my time management or my mental state, but school really feels like it screws kids over a lot of the time. The American education system needs to change to accompany kids' abilities to be creative, critical, and collaborative, instead of drilling into our brains that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Go Eddy! So glad you found your path. I agree with you wholeheartedly - and I'm a teacher! I see kids come to school so wide-eyed and excited to learn, and all too often school just kills that in kids. We need to encourage kids to think outside the box. We need to LISTEN to kids. And we need to tap into their natural passion and curiosity. We will never have happy, satisfied, motivated and innovative people if we don't change our approach. I've been fighting the system from within for almost 40 years now. Creativity needs to be valued and encouraged. I hope I get a chance to do a TED talk about why creativity matters.

Totally agreed. In highschool and college I became really good at math. I was acing all my tests and exams and I felt good about myself. It wasn't until I was in the real world I realized how little of it I could actually apply. I spent all this time learning how to manipulate and work with equations and problems that were neatly organized and tied in a bow for me to unravel. With zero training how to model these equations from real world data, how to figure out what relevant information you need to solve the problem and how to acquire it. It felt like my whole life education was holding a nail for me and only training me how to swing a hammer to drive in the nail in straight. Then I got into the real world and realized I have no idea where to get the nail from, where to place it, how to hold it for myself and how to incorporate it into the problem that is a house I'm trying to build. Then you go into the world and you're asked "well what do you know how to build ?" and you realize all you know how to do is swing a hammer and you're severely underprepared.

I student-taught within a project-based, public middle school program, some aspects of which compared favorably to my own college undergrad experience. There was a ton of student choice and investment within that program, relative to the rest of the school (it actually had the lowest absence rates in the entire school district). That’s where education is theoretically headed, fortunately.

Sadly true, in my computer engineering class, I ignored every lesson, because I've taught myself everything I know about computers and programming, and I ened up getting a 97% in the class, with 100% on the exam.

Gerpar Like 5 percent of the lessons are Computer studies, art(not complaining) and more. And I HATED art, but I liked it when I could draw freely, and computers! 98! 99! 100! It seemed easy to me. Then I looked at other who were barely free. They struggled at making text, and I even helped in tests, and they still got like 80. Meanwhile the subject I HATED most was Chi. I studied everyday, every minute. 60 70. Anything that I like, enjoy or feel free doing it, I was perfect. Anyways, here is my advise, let children feel free doing what they want ,show them what they can do! Look at Einstein, he was called the smartest man alive and he didn't even pay attention.

I sent this too my best friend who struggles with the school curriculum and she replied and i quote “ i 100% agree with this. I thinks schools also take away your survival intelligence because they are always teaching long formulas and written annotations that to do a task like surviving would be much more difficult than it naturally should be because we have become so used to long, planned and perfect sequenced answers “

I'm in 10th grade and when I hear the name school my social anxiety triggers i feel suffocated in school i feel like everyone is judging me and my anxiety gets worse when the teacher calls me or ask's a question Edit : this is all what school taught me

This guy is awesome. I also dropped out of high school, never went to college, and now i run an entire online school's back end operations and make a good living from it. All because i had time to learn my craft ( programming, user interface design, and graphic design ) due to the free time not wasted on the public education system. Real learning does not happen in school.

+Hakasauars I agree with that IF you follow the normal route of taking school. However I believe that if you start an entrepreneurial venture in school, with the help of mentors (mine started a business that was acquired for $1.2 Billion), while learning history which allows you to see future events (everything is in cycles if you look at class disputes, revolutions, etc.), math which helps in analytical thinking, and other subjects like psychology to persuade and sell, then school is actually of great value. I also see it as a platform to connect with different people in which their parents are from all different types of industries (fashion, real estate, technology), however I know that I am lucky to be privileged and go to a very different school than when I first started (a small step above poverty (parents came as factory workers)). If you mean just going to class, going home to study to get into a decent school to pay 60K+ a year to do the same thing then to pay it off, then I understand exactly what you mean. But if you use it to further what you were trying to accomplish in the first place I see nothing wrong with it, it's just how you use it in my opinion that changes the result.
