Kristen Howerton is such a compelling speaker. She catches your attention and keeps it the whole time she’s talking. I had such a great time watching this whole talk. The way she related psychology to the social media scene was really brilliant. Kudos on this wonderful talk.

I'd just like to bring this up. Depression is not something you feel, it is something you become. It isn't like anger where it's there for a bit and goes away. It stays with you. It takes over your life.

If you're like me, then you paused this video wondering why she's not talking about Social Media. She eventually gets there, and makes a connection to her story. Pretty good speaker don't get me wrong, but maybe the story was excessive. Or she could have inform the listener that her story would later be relevant to the main topic. Thumps up!

This is why social media is looked at as a problem. She is describing her experience and how she used packing to cope with experience just as many individuals use social media to distract them from their goals, priorities, relationships, and problems. Blessed day to all

This story is so beautiful that it touches my heart . Social media is taking so much of our lives that we really should disconnect with it for some time and really connect wih the world and be joyful and in touch with our feelings even when we don't want to ! We should know when to let go of the suitcase .

If you're looking for a thoughtful discussion about the pros and cons of social media, skip this video. She doesn't even get around the the topic of social media until 15 minutes into her 18-minute talk, and then rambles for a couple of minutes about the internet being helpful and also being a diversion.

I'm a little confused. Was her habit to pack "her bag" and take a trip to visit her future son? Was she saying she realized how bad the habit was when "'her bag" was treated more importantly than the safety of her daughter? Finally, was she stating that people can use FB to the point of not realizing how bad a habit they may be developing? I think I agree with her that we need to keep ourselves in check, but I'm not too sure what her intention was here. Some may say it was essential for her to pack her bag. It may have put her in the vibrational harmony to manifest being able to get on a plane to go home. Her habit to get ready to go therefore could have saved her and her baby's life :-) I love the internet because I let my feelings flow here too . I think, to each his own when it comes to what habits are good and which ones aren't.

Packing and re-packing the bag was a diversion from the scary situation she was in. It's an analogy to using the internet and social media to avoid one's feelings.

komal upadhyaya she spoke of that experience because her packing her suitcase was her diversion just as many of us use social media as a diversion from our fears, priorities, and so many other things.

You had to think for 10 minutes on the question of : "your baby or your bag" ? It would have taken me 10 seconds.
@micheleboyd993910 жыл бұрын
Listen to what she actually says. "I did not actually think of abandoning my baby for my suitcase..." It was never a question of leaving her baby. In her mind, it was "Leave the suitcase and go now, or wait for a plane that can take me, my baby, and my bag." Before you judge, do some research on what extended sleep deprivation and weeks of exposure to live-and-death experiences (repeated severe earthquakes in unstable buildings) do to the brain. Extreme sleep deprivation causes hallucinations. Repeated trauma induces acute stress syndromes. With everything she was going through, I'll give her 10 minutes of not being able to let go of her suitcase.

If at all possible it is best to have families adopt within their own race for a number of reasons. Most importantly it is BEST for the child. They might be fine as children but growing up they are going to have a major identity crisis. Race is more than skin deep. It is the result of thousands of years of evolution in isolated regions of the world. Physical traits as well as behavioral and instinctual traits between races are very different for this reason. Trying to make another race fit into yours is somewhat cruel. Children learn from a young age how to use their body by mimicking the people who are genetically like them. Because whites and blacks have completely different bone structures and body types these children will suffer as a consequence. Also, I have one adopted parent myself and don't know my biological father. One of my sisters was completely adopted into another family and had a 'better' life than us because of it. But her heart breaks because she longs to have grown up with her birth family. My adopted father loved me but I would do anything to have my real dad. It is like half of me is missing. Our feelings are not unique. If we really care about children in this world we would do EVERYTHING we possibly could for biological families to stay together. 99.9999% of mothers do not want to give up their children but feel they have to for many reasons, mostly financial. Children also want to be with their BIRTH parents. I feel like white people adopting children of other races is becoming trendy and for the wrong reasons. To appear morally righteous, to show 'what a good person you are' or total ignorance. I understand if these children had no other option but to be orphaned and no one who resembled them more closely genetically wanted them, then it is wonderful for someone to step in and raise them. But we need to be more realistic about how we approach adoption, and do what is best for the children and families and the real moral thing to do is HELP BIOLOGICAL FAMILIES STAY TOGETHER. Even better when you don't tell the whole world what a 'good' person you are.

I'm starting to think that TED needs to pull the license of TEDx. This talk was banal and convoluted, I can't really say what is the point she's making because her argument is all over the place. I'm sure this isn't her first rodeo in front of a large crowd. I don't think community colleges are handing out PhDs yet, so I would assume that at least during her thesis defense she had to clearly articulate her position. I would like to have an opinion about what she had to say, but again the speech was a too much of a mess to follow.
@insanity75387 жыл бұрын
She just wanted to virtue signal her progressiveness as a White woman who adopted black children. It's just the thing to do for White liberals who pretend to care, but really just want to reap social brownie points from their liberal peers.

Professor Howerton did not mention Jesus. I believe she mentioned praying. Its a personal talk, so if someone wishes to mention their God (s) etc, if it doesn't take over the content, then there is no issue. Michael, you indicate by saying 'rational science' that scientists are rational individuals, and that those who believe in a higher power are 'irrational'. Every human has the ability to be irrational, if they become fixated on something enough.
