This is the first time I ever leave a comment on KZbin. Brilliant! I wish others would speak about these issues. There is certainly more to say but you have dared to disturb the sleeping ogre!

I was one of those ECRs with multiple postdocs who also ended up leaving the country in which I was trained, in my case Canada--I was simply unable to find a secure academic position there. The casualization of research and teaching labour in the university system is one of the scandals of my lifetime.

I am happy that i watched this video before sending my papers for PhD, I havent changed my mind though, but i have improved my view on it all. I am only doing this to enhance my skills while employed to this organization.

I agree, Andy, Ph.D. and post-doc research should be more esteemed within the society of the United States and should be compensated accordingly! I enjoy your channel very much...Tom

Should I do a PhD to start a startup in the USA?

I am doing a PhD because I always wanted to do it and also because as a full time employee I can take 12 credits a year while working. Otherwise I would not do it.

This is an important supply-side point. But Andrew and others need also to look at the demand side and the now massive market oversupply of PhDs. The probability of securing a long term position is not just a function of the reduction in those numbers but the huge growth in candidates for the shrinking number of Academic jobs. Candidates need to very seriously examine if $30k pa tax free for three years is worth the investment of their time and energy in a v narrow and specialised band of knowledge. I’ve worked with many PhDs in my long career and most add little intellectual value over a good Hons degree and/or a Masters by Research.

At this very moment I am contemplating the possibility of starting a PhD; however, before that, I have thought deeply about why I want this, and the answer to this question is that based on what I could find online, people without PhD and just Masters rarely seem to get a good positions in R&Ds departments at companies. For people wanting to do research in life, that being academic or industrial, you MUST have a PhD

@@alboz1327 my point is most PhDs don’t end up in research, and the more that do them the higher the average probability they won’t.

So ask more people what job expectations a PhD will get, specially those with successful experience in the job market.
