His critique of modern classicism was a bit misleading. He showed in the first reference a bank that actually had decent proportions and well done classical design and compared it to the new bank that the mayor commissioned with horribly out of proportion ionic columns (if you would even call them that). I'm guessing that the mayor had a lot of say in how the building should be "avant garde" and led the architect to make decisions that made the new county building kische and extremely out of proportion. Classical buildings or traditional style buildings designed right can still be made today and are still beautiful when done right. He's right, no one can predict what the style of the time will be in the future, but we do know what humans have loved and admired for hundreds and even thousands of years. We can reference that kind of building and architecture. I highly recommend another TEDTalk called "Timeless or of its Time: Architecture for the 21st century" by David Payne for further information on what I'm trying to say. - from an architecture graduate who studied both modern and traditional architecture.

If you look at historic neighborhoods as a resource I think this issue makes more sense. We all (as a city) benefit if our cities have historic districts. It increases tourism, gives the city an identity (a brand name), and creates places of high pedestrian traffic that make the perfect spots for local businesses to thrive. When we have interesting places to visit that are beautiful we also benefit psychologically and physically ( we walk around and look at the buildings and gardens and go into the local stores, and we feel good after visiting them). When the national park and forests were founded the same arguments were made against having them. A property owner should be able to do whatever it wants to do with their property. But even as a property rights advocate, do you really believe that? Do you believe they should be allowed to pollute the creek that runs through their property? Have a factory in a neighborhood of homes? Kill off an endangered species? The scary thought I have is that, yes, you do. You think that corporations that have enough money to buy up our historic neighborhoods do have the right to tear them down and make a quick profit off of our local history and quality architecture. Just like corporations do when they overfish the oceans, tear down forests, and drill for oil, despite the fact that those of us in those communities have to pay the long term cost of their short term plundering. There are shared resources that we all need and should have a right to. Clean air, clean water, healthy ecosystems, and for those of us that live in cities or that would like to visit other cities, our historic neighborhoods.

Freud didn't know everything. In fact he was incorrect about many assumptions he had. We don't need Psychology for every moment. It has it's purpose but also limits.
