Thanks for pointing out both the pros and cons of fintech. I currently study finance in college and love this field, but fear that the traditional finance industry will get disrupted by new technology.

With technology, instant transfers are happening like UPI in India, simplifying settlements and claims. Clearing houses will vanish. No need of brokers or mediators who had to support money movement through investment in cashflows. Collateral and escrow business gets disrupted by block chain based smart contracts. Investment consultants replaced by demat and smart algorithms digesting trillions of insights worldwide and generating accurate and precise advices through machine learning algorithms.

Your mother is a wise woman, but she has a misconception about how money and currencies work. For example, a dollar bill is still just a piece of paper and as a piece of paper it is not worth much. However, the value to the piece of paper comes from the fact that other people accept it in turn for some other valuable like an orange. The value is created by people and their trust into the one dollar bill that it will buy you something. This is also true for crypto currencies, because people trust them and they are willing to give valuables for it.
