After more than four decades of being a diplomat with countless negotiations (literally!), Javad Zarif shares his long-earned wisdom about four big mistakes we make in our communications, from small day-to-day talks to negotiation on big global issues. MohammadJavad Zarif as the Foreign Minister led the Iranian team in the international negotiations which resulted to JCPOA. He has also been involved in numberous negotations in the United Nations and other places on behalf of his country. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Don't worry. It didn't have any special content. You can consider it as a joke! 1) dialogue is very important. Most of (international) problems have their own roots in misunderstanding 2) when we take power, opposite parties/people must be shut up. ... As an Iranian, I should remind you that he is not the Foreign Minister of Iran, but the Foreign Minister of (so-called) reformist parties contrary to the way that Supreme Leader of Iran is moving. That's all. Regards!

Very nice speech, he covered the topics that I'm currently concern about. We can't hold conversation, we just enjoy being witty and winning an argument. (Exactly, most of the time ppl mistake conversations with an arguments! Look at the comments section of social medias as an example) Everyday living in the society is getting hard and harder, just because of the zero-sum game illusion. Life is not a game, life is being kind and merciful to each other and provide help to whom ever need it if we are able to, without asking what I get in return. (Politics for sure is a game, but not necessarily a zero-sum one) Being smart is an advantage, but being kind is what makes you a human. We are all losing what our ancestors left for us, Humanity!

Javad Zarif understands the conflict resolution well and counters the logic of the zero sum game. However, why has your government suppressed the Persian culture and the Zoroastrian faith for Islam? Cyrus the Great, the father to all Persians, and the founder of the Iranian state is no longer celebrated for giving life to Iranian society through a secular tradition that upholds Free Will and Justice. Unfortunately, Zarif’s government has played the zero sum game with its own people to the detriment of Persian culture till today. Now, when will sharia law upheld by the Supreme Leader and the guardian council allow for Free Will and Justice to provide a brighter future for its people? How many more secular Iranians will be pushed out of the country, imprisoned or publicly murdered for this zero sum game to end? You speak so eloquently but hide behind your politeness the true intentions of your regime. We want Freedom and the Persian culture to survive. We want a democratic republic separate from religion that allows representation without Islamic law controlling the candidates that favor Sharia law. This government is not humanitarian and won’t listen to its own people. This regime either needs to listen and compromise or risk destroying Iran for its own selfish needs and with it the soul of its people.

Let's attribute accountabilities where it's appropriate. Since when was it "Zarif's" government? He was just a minister in a huge web of behind-the-scenes power players. It's funny that you talk about Cyrus and Zoroastrianism. That train left 1400 years ago when Iranians were subdued by Muslims. Are you suggesting that Zarif should bring all of that back single handedly?

@@user-li8qh4tv9tInsane. You'll live a very frustrating life if you don't come to terms with today's reality. Surely there must be a more efficient way for you to reconcile the golden past with the dark recent history. You and all other ancient civilizations, Babylonians, mighty Egyptians, Greeks, Romans... We can't live in the past, must accept what happened and get out with the present conditions.
@user-li8qh4tv9t

@@lede1810 Insanity is to continue to support this government. According to recent research, 50% of the country doesn't identify as Muslim and embrace their ancient culture. Jews still exist. Their beliefs are as old as ours. The rest of the Iranian population is either only nominally Muslim or supports the regime. Let's say at best 25% of Iranians are in support of this regime. However, it's probably a lot less. Furthermore, the most religious and fanatical Iranians are uneducated, and the rest of the regime's supporters are tied to the government with corruption. They are the immediate coalition that supports the control, like the IRGC.

With all due respect for Mr. Zarif, this story is not analogous to the JCPOA. For one thing the boy understood that the girl did not aim to eat the orange. He took the 105% and ate it whole, then he tried to destroyed all the orange shells so the girl could not make her marmalade! Zarif would have been an excellent diplomat for President Ahmadinejad. President Rouhani should have had a rather less diplomatic minister!

It's so sad that we have Iranians in our country who are brainwashed by the western media. even the American people know they're lying through their teeth and yet our fellow Iranians believe their lies. I don't like any Theocratic governments but I'm a proud Iranian who believes in our country, our culture and our people. I invite those who hate Zarif to go and do some research and then try to criticize him. judge yourself before judging the others. love and peace.

@Furrukh Rao Don't worry. That's all. Regards!

Atyeh Atyeh he’s stated that he’s not interested in becoming president however he could change his mind one day. Regardless I think he’s very intelligent and charismatic and greatly represents the Iranian people. Not a fan of the regime he’s representing though.

To be honest (and not just dismissive) his analogies are puerile : they take up 80% of his speaking time. Why not just give us the four points, they are not difficult concepts. He talks like an Imam - condescendingly treating the congregation like illiterate plebs. Just give us the four points, then add some interesting anecdotes from your years of diplomacy. The childishness of this talk drives one mad.
