Amazing how the further we progress, the more accurate great teachers like Yeshua (Jesus) become. This reminds me of the rich guy in the bible that asked Yeshua what he should do to inheritthe kingdom, the response was "if you want to be happy, sell everything you have and follow me". The guy couldnt do it and walked away dejected.

I am so happy to meet you two!! Last August, My husband and I decided "he needed to go on a long road trip in order to save our relationship. He loves to take road trips and I tend to need home time. So off he went on what ended up a 11,000 road trip and I started looking at our packed 3 car garage. To me, coming home and when the garage door opens to welcome me with open arms, all I saw was "stuff". Stuff everywhere, I felt "cluttered in my heart and soul. So I decided to start cleaning, packing, giving away, selling things I didn't need anymore. The second thought when he would come home with a clear head, I would present him with a clear garage. That August 7, 2016 started my journey. It was mind clearing for me and I would rest in the evening, get an urge to go clean up some more at 11pm and I was energized! As the weeks went on, I documented with photos and videos of my progress. I would look at them often and I felt giddy and happy in my mind and heart. There was a side benefit that I started losing weight too! He eventually came home and I was so excited for him to drive up and open the garage door and see the transformation. It was really hard for me not to leak my secret when he would Facetime or call me. Then with that elation I felt, I started in on my own wardrobe closet, and that is when I realized "less is more". I then found Marie Kondo: "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" Now....here is the big point of my sharing...Our relationship was renewed, and he wo was so proud that his BIG road trip, he learned that a few change of underwear , one pair ,of jeans, a fleece, windbreaker and toiletries and he too started his own road to recovery on "less is more". We looked around our 2500 sf house of 4 bedrooms, that I had filled up. Our family was him, me and one little white dog. We bought a 1500 sf townhome and currently donating furniture, packing up all nicknacks, and basically closing the doors with furniture and starting a new chapter in our life. Then a week ago we came across you two! I like seeing open spaces and my mind is refreshed. I am happy you two came across my path to recovery of "compulsive consumption" Lastly my offering of advice. "Why do you need 6 bottles of anything just because they are on sale in quantities. Remember keep your money in your pocket as the products will always be on the shelves..those are your storage facility without costing"

+DontTouchTheWatch I think that there's nothing wrong with owning stuff, as long as you are using them or they are of a high value for you. During my downsizing process, the criteria I used for getting rid of stuffs is if I either need them or if they are important for me/they are items I really like. I still have loads of books, as I truly adore reading, and I will not go digital simply because I like them :) but I really downsized on clothing, cosmetics and other items I don't need… even with food! I don't buy food that I will not eat and I really try to plan my purchases in a way that I know they are necessary or useful to my entertainment/growth (and not to fill up the void)

Went to the minimalist website. A heap of tabs, a heap more sub-tabs, a shitload of essays on top of links to facebook, twitter, google pintrest, youtube and a few others I don't recognise. Meanwhile, my parents who don't even own mobile phones, are not on facebook etc. have no clue what youtube is, and they just invited me over for a picnic they are having in their backyard. Here I am commenting and reading up on this stuff when the invitation is there right in front of me to experience it. I should have been the one inviting them over for a picnic.

I think in the end, you got the message they were explaining anyways :) I would suggest you try listening to their podcasts (on iphone/ipod/online), because they are free and easy to listen to while walking, driving, etc. I got the most value from that, and its totally free. I dont think theyre really out to "get" anything out of it, they seem to have been just as surprised by the intense response to their message. I read their book "Everything That Remains" and really liked the story - you can probably borrow it from your local library for free, as they recommend. I got rid of around 60% of my stuff and am focusing more clearly than ever before on the important people and meaningful work in my life, and am very happy. Best of luck to you, you only live once! “When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love ...” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Me and my husband had to start minimalism. There was one time he was like I DONT HAVE SHIRTS TO WEAR! I counted all his shirts that night and counted 74 shirts and 8 pants. I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. He gets to wear all of them in 2 weeks (just in time for laundry) and we have so much closet space! IT is the way to go. Less anxiety really

Post a slightly shitty comment (me in this case), receive a justifiably harsh response (that would be you this time), then apologise accepting fault and receive forgiveness. We could save the world, one annoying post at a time. Putting people in a situation where they look at fault if they don't accept the apology but they actually feel good once they've done it. Jon Bellamy Keep in mind that your iPad can be used as a tool and isn't necessarily a burden. I'm working on constructing a library on iBooks on my iPad while selling my paperbacks to used bookstores and donating them. So far it has freed up SO much space. I'm working on being a minimalist as well, but I'm not selling "nearly all" of my possessions - I love reading, writing and gaming, so for me personally, my MacBook and iPad are helpful tools that AID you in the pursuit of a minimalistic lifestyle. That being said, we cancelled our cable (because with the exception of HBO, network TV has become a series of reality TV bullshit), cancelled our cell service and are working on riding our bikes more and using our car for only long-distance errands. It's a process that's unique to you - if you don't need your electronics, by all means be free of them, but think about them in terms of how they could help you as well before you make that decision. :)

Jon Bellamy You don't need to sell your laptop dude. Those are things you use constantly everyday and are important to your life and work flow. I wouldn't consider myself a minimalist but several years ago I had an epiphany. Everytime time I did the dishes, I would get angry because there was wasn't enough room in the cabinets for all my mugs. Then it dawned on me. I had too many mugs. Everytime there was a souvenir I wanted to buy for myself it was always a mug/cup, t-shirt, or keychain. Or someone else would get me a souvenir that fit in one of these categories or a scented candle. I realized these items had no meaning, they were just the things we were conditioned to buy whenever we took a trip somewhere or did something. I haven't cleared our my space completely but now I refuse to buy cups, t-shirts, and keychains and as a result I typically don't buy anything when I travel bc I think to myself, "do I need that" or "do I have space for that" and the answer is almost always a resounding no. It was an epiphany that changed me.

As a self proclaimed minimalist, I moved aboard a sailboat, only able to bring things with me that I absolutely needed. It was so freeing. The best thing about it, I didn't have a car, or a house, and I drove a row-boat to shore and a moped to work. The statement that sums up the life: I had no keys. No keychain. No metal set of keys. Minimalism at its best.

Great stuff! I'm a big fan of living simply. I paid off my condo in 11 years then I was living comfortably on 30% of my take home pay each month. I wanted a garden though so I saved while the property values were going down and then bought this house on a half acre back in 2012, right when the market bottomed. Since then it's gained about 80 thousand. I basically live in my bedroom though. I have a living room but the only thing in it is a lone coffee table and a stationary bike. My Dad's the same way and when he got too old to take care of his house, he gave it back to the bank (it was WAY under water) and moved into one of my spare rooms. We've got a pretty good life here.

I heard it before and he said it in this video. We only use 20 % of what we own. The other 80% is to stroke our false selves, our egos..... To fill a void that can't be filled with pretty, impressive things. Even Henry David Thoreau told us to "simplify". Meaning and richness in life don't come from stuff. We all need to take minimalism to heart.

+DontTouchTheWatch It's nice that you're experiencing so much "true human freedom and happiness" even as you call people on KZbin afraid and delusional, but perhaps it's not for everyone. Understanding religion by talking to a variety of folk and reading many books by Buddhists, atheists, Christians, and Muslims have given me a lot of insight. Knowledge of even just one or two of those can give you powerful information on culture, history, artwork, and literature. I'm glad that he's done so. Obviously, if he doesn't need a master to give him "principles to obediently follow," then he shouldn't need to meet your demands or use your advice.

I hopped on the minimalizing trend 5 years ago. When I moved from Colorado to Texas 2 years ago, I got rid of 1/2 of my posessions. Now, I'm getting rid of the rest. It feels good! As the "stuff" disappears, I feel lighter, more free, more peace. The less I have, the better I feel. The hardest part is letting go of the emotional attachment to the "stuff". I hold it, feel the love then let go of the attachment. Then send it off to who ever or wherever it's going to go to its' new home ~ out of my home. Peace.

After years of cutting back from a 3 bedroom duplex I moved into a small 1 bedroom apartment, then I cut even further by moving into a 300 sf furnished studio. Last year I got everything down to a 5x10 storage unit. And really I don't need what is in that as everything I need can be carried around in the trunk of my car. So now I bounce around from place to place with my dog and the contents of my trunk....and I am so much happier

For me one of the problems is emotional attachment. Recently I threw away my old tape recorder cassettes and felt so bad. I did not lose the music, I had copies on my PC. I was afraid to lose memories. Each cassette reminded me the years when I was a student and I saved money to buy an album of one of my favorite bands, and the excitement I got when holding this cassette in my hand, and then going to my friends and listening to the music. Every tiny thing in my house triggers so many memories and I'm afraid that I lose that all if I throw the things away. Yeah, maybe I'm too sentimental and cannot let my past go, but my past is what made me the man I am today. How do you, guys, deal with this stuff - how do you throw away useless things which have strong emotions attached?
@Punishment_for_Decadence

My Oma was one such person. She hoarded her belongings. Even when the things she clung to were in decay and simply making clutter in her house she could not let them go because of the emotional attachment she had to them and the fear of losing these placeholders of her memories. Honestly, the greatest liberation comes from knowing that the past was a good time and will always be in your memory and that as long as you keep the ember of each memory stoked from time to time you will never forget. Always, remember to remember. Once you realise this, letting go of things that have a sentimental value but serve no other current purpose can be extremely liberating. You don't deal with the stuff, you deal with the emotions related to that stuff. After all, it is just stuff... Namaste

+DontTouchTheWatch ["It is easiest to be minimalist when you're poor since you can't afford excess things that you don't need."] - Sorry, but no, that is simplistic thinking and understanding regarding this issue. A MINIMALIST LIFESTYLE generally represents an advanced mindset stemming from the personal revelation that materialism is not the answer. An indigent person struggling to get by will generally have an elevated view of materials as they have yet gotten to enjoy them and also realize their diminishing value in actually helping one experience deeper happiness. Try telling a hungry person food is not the answer. In sum, being forced to be minimalist really isn't minimalist. It's called being an Economical Poor F**k. ATL's original statement was spot on. PEACE :)

Alexander Albert I just re-read my food analogy. Yes.. it was crappy due to the ambiguity related to it's "necessity" aspect. The valid part of the analogy (and the intention) was to convey it is difficult to transcend something you have NEVER experienced but perceive that you need. ------------------------ However, on the note of crappy analogies LOL -"what the heck does WORKING LESS and PAYING SMALLER TAXES have anything to do with going w/out stuff or being minimalist?? [Sounds like an instinctive Republican-esque putdown of the impoverished, actually??] [NOTE: I'm ET and have never voted - but I was born and raised in Whitefish]

Alexander Albert (1) Minimalism more relates to expenditures than income, but certainly minimalism better enables a lifestyle of less work and lower taxes. I agree there. (2) Also, Yes, taxes are slavery-based and a sneaky cultural accepted exploitative economic system --- AND GOING REAL DEEP ON YOU OUT OF NOWHERE - BUT GEE I CREATED THE FOLLOWING QUOTE JUST 12 days ago AND ITS RELATED ha-ha --- *"Subconscious fear of death spurs capitalism and banking; perfectly cloaked vital energy theft and storage cultural mechanisms."* --tINp ©2016 Peace.

Yes, an impoverished person is objectively minimalist. However, minimalist according this video (which is the topic of discussion) is VERBATIM about: "A Rich Life with Less Stuff". In other words, the deeper point is how the RICHNESS of life is subjective, internal.. and therefore does not require extensive external material possessions. In fact, getting rid of them can facilitate internal richness, especially once you start to sense their lack of INTERNAL VALUE. In sum, this video is really about achieving an INTERNAL SUBJECTIVE state of richness. *Being poor only makes one objectively minimalist, but not necessarily subjectively rich.* Hopefully, the poor can find that state w/o experiencing the hyped and illusory value of materials. I think there is some intellectual nuance here you are missing. (no offense). PEACE ;)

I certainly agree with them on the mentality of minimalism as I try to practice it myself. I think the issue at hand though is if you live in poverty surviving day-to-day, it's much more difficult to achieve this kind of lifestyle. For example, poor people have worse health than those who have more money due to lack of quality food, adequate healthcare, and higher exposure to toxic environments around their homes. I don't want to put down the speakers for trying to inspire better lifestyles for people, but it is important to note that those with greater resources are better equipped for achieving something like this.

True. Still, the information is still useful for all walks of life. If we all had less, consumed less, and just focused on the bare essentials what we truly make us happy and/or what we truly need, we could hall have more space for helping and supporting each other. If people have lesser than less, I think those who open their minds to removing excess will help and likely contribute to those people, so that we can all achieve some kind of balance. Just my thoughts/hope anyway.

My husband and I are planning on buying a home this year and I come from a very busy home things everywhere and I do not want that for my home ! As little as possible, no clutter just open space . We almost bought a 2,500sft home but decided to downsize and use our space more efficiently

For 8 months all I had in my flat was a mattress, pillow, bedding, laptop, two pans, two plates, one spoon, fork and two knives. A toothbrush, a bottle of shampoo, a bar of soap, 5 books, a lamp, a stereo system and two cardboard boxes. In the first one I kept all "important stuff" (documents, bills, money etc.) in the other all my clothes. And you know what? It was so.. I don't know what word to use.. liberating perhaps. Plus I never had so much money on my bank account.

Watching this in 2021 💖 I really love your philosophy, Joshua and Ryan! "Love people, use things (because the opposite never works)".

Very interesting and so true on many levels. There comes a time after a life time of accumulating things that you find that you do not even make use of more than half of it. You find that you have so much to clean and shuffle around ... you find that you cannot find what you are looking for because there is too much stuff.

Great Talk! Minimalism, a valuable philosophy, has its roots in all the world's great religions. "Content thyself with but little of this world’s goods! Verily, economy is a great treasure. " - Abdul-Baha, Baha'i Writings

Watching this talk was a wake-up call for me. I used to think that having more stuff would make me happier, but now I realize that the opposite is true. It's time to declutter my life and focus on what really matters. Thank you, Minimalists, for inspiring me to live a more intentional and fulfilling life

i look around my very plain empty house, and realize i am a minimalist. everything i have is a must that supports my passions. i do this a different way by asking myself do i want it, or do i need it. maybe once a year i buy something i want.

True words. After following minimalism,u would be surprised to know that even unwanted things from my thoughts also disappeared. First time feeling rich
