TEDx Talks

11 жыл бұрын

We're motivated by our own wanting to see Native People in a modern and vital context. Also, girls may be watching. The 1491s are an artist collective of American Indian writers, filmmakers, visual and traditional artists, and language advocates. I'm going to be honest here. Half our group had no idea who TED was before we got asked to speak. And the other half still doesn't know. We're excited because TEDx is a forum that is outside of Indian Country. We're thrilled to be able to play with people's perception of Indians. The idea of Natives as a waning, sad, nearly extinct and mythical species is suuuuper wrong.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I'm a fan from Spain(europe) and I love their humor! I understand everything they do, and their humor is their best weapon against all the negative things, not only for natives also for non native people like me. by the way I would like to have a 1491s T shirt haha.

Bobby has a Sinatra-esque style. The two together really have some fun shtick. Heavy subjects easier with a bit of humor. Sometimes one has to laugh, be silly, to keep from crying...Those who don't "get" their humor don't get it mostly because there's indigenous cultural twist to it...not the regular white industrial culture humor.

I love the speech one indian person gave: he said that we all are native because we have been not long ago and we are doing best if we rediscover our roots; our sense of belonging to the indigenous mankind. Not long ago we all were involved with life on a deep, native and intrinsic level! That gives me hope because I have hardly learned any identity in my growing up (I am german). I am a woman and I can feel the earth vibrating through me if I listen closely.

For most of my life I had people say you can't be an Indian, you look white. This of course came from white people. Yes I am part white (Irish and German ancestry) yet I am also Choctaw and Cherokee. I have the features, but not the "skin color". So because my skin is not a certain color, people think I cannot be a Indian. It's crazy because a Indain can look at me and say, so what Nation are you, but a white person asks what country is your ancestors from. With your videos, you have helped me say watch 1491's you tube channel and you will see someone like me white on the inside but Indian on the inside. I also have learned to stop caring so much about what people see me as, though it helps that my husband whom is Seminole looks Seminole skin color and all lol.

You have to understand the way that Papa God Made You Is Beautiful. Coming from a multi-race background you get all kinds of different things said to you. Some white people are very insecure because they don't want you to know your own self because they want you to be assimilated into their race....as usual. I look at it this way, it took me a very long time to find out who I was. It is all good because Papa God made me beautiful human and do not care what people think.

I know you noticed that Ryan Redcorn from the 1491s is Osage, and largely "white." His brother Alex works for KU. I was unsure about my place and about enrollment until I noticed Ryan and his brothers. And it is all about intention. The right reasons. If a white passing native only wants to affiliate so they can get paid, I would say that is not the right reason, or the right way. Affiliation with the Cherokee Nation for me is because I wish to honor the committment the nation made when it adopted my Shawnee, or Shawanooki, Great Grandfather and his siblings into the Cherokee Nation after having been displaced. So I wish to honor that, and work for the good of all, especially my native/indigenous cousins here on Turtle Island, and the rest of the world.

Thank you guys for representing us native americans as people ...Real People not victims or a hollywood image . I'm am still Native American when I'm not wearing my Traditional Dress which I have not worn for a long time because I feel like I'm just putting on a show for the white man and like like a puppet for the Indians and it takes something for me so I don't even wear my beautiful buckskin dress because I feel like how I was already been just something for the white people it's not about our culture it's not about our of being who we are it's about them being entertained

Once you teach everyone every race about how everyone is indoctrinated by media then you can make a change to your behaviour. As a sober observer also a woman single mom you see the correlation between people’s behaviour and what’s happening in the media, what is shows. Like I realized I was not going to play the part of the “drunk Indian”. Drunks in every race are capable of great violence. I chose at a young age not to drink the genocide drink, i don’t lord over anyone because of my sobriety though. Our people are people who were given a raw deal and had our lands, resources and territories squandered by the genocide beneficiaries. I would go on but I’m a busy mom grandmother ❤
