Күн бұрын

Dr Brendan Egan is a University College Dublin (UCD) lecturer in sport and exercise science in the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science, whose TEDxUCD 2014 talk is entitled 'Muscle Matters'.
On the sporting front, Brendan has represented Co. Sligo in Gaelic football at Senior inter-county level since 2003.
In his TEDxUCD 2014 talk Brendan explains the importance of maintaining muscle mass as we age.
Modern science has led to automation which means that we are predisposed to being physically inactive and in his talk Brendan outlines the risks to our health of this development. Furthermore, better medicines are leading to greater longevity and as the global population is getting older, the long term impact on health care provision is a huge challenge to be addressed.
Brendan in his talk focuses on Sarcopenia, a disease involving age related wasting of muscle, and talks about the connections with other diseases, including cancer and diabetes, and he encourages us to change our lifestyles now in order to keep our muscles strong as we age.
Dr Brendan Egan is a lecturer in sport and exercise science in the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science covering modules in sports nutrition, exercise prescription and molecular exercise physiology.
His current research interests concern the nutritional enhancement of sports performance and the molecular regulation of skeletal muscle function and adaptation in exercise, health and disease.
Brendan graduated with a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Limerick in 2003, before graduating from Loughborough University with distinction from the MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition programme.
He returned to Ireland in late 2004 to commence doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr Donal O'Gorman at Dublin City University. The focus of this research was on skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise and in particular the continuity between acute molecular responses to individual bouts of exercise and the adaptations in skeletal muscle induced by exercise training.
He was awarded his PhD in 2008, before moving on to the prestigious Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. There he completed his post-doctoral training in Professor Juleen Zierath's Integrative Physiology group at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery. Here his research, using animal and in-vitro cell systems, focused on the transcriptional regulation of skeletal muscle insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes by small, non-coding RNAs.
He joined the faculty at UCD in 2011.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I’ve heard doctors say this for over 20 years - Orthopaedic surgeons specifically back, then as loading yourself with weights reduces dramatically the loss of bone. Obviously muscle is retained in the process. This talk is very important for people to see as the message is not getting through to the lazy ones. Use it or lose it.

Sure but cardio e.g. running or walking is WAY more important for health and longevity because lifting at the gym does not improve your cardiovascular health, it doesn't make your heart stronger nor your lungs more efficient, cardio does.
@chookvalve
@chookvalve 3 жыл бұрын
@@Danuxsy not really the point of this video is it. But no one is saying get rid of cardio. And. - cardiovascular health is improved via weights if you’re intense about it actually. Besides to alleviate injuries, you need warm up and warm down and that is a cardio function.

Perfect Presentation- It naturally comes across as obvious. Simple facts/graphs and explanations. Point made; just like animals or cars, if you sit you rust, batteries drain and you seize up or... you use what you have wisely and stay moving, alive and healthier than you probably thought you could. Thank you Dr. Egan for this refreshing talk and simple message. This really helps support my beliefs and what I prescribe as a Coach!

I spent 52 days in the ICU in 2021 before and after my liver transplant. Started physical therapy about 40 days in. Lost so much muscle and was so tight that I could not sit up in bed. Could wrap my hand around my bicep and touch my thumb and index finger together. When they finally got me to try to stand up, I had help from a special machine and two people. Screamed in pain. Spent 3 weeks post ICU in physical therapy hospital. I have gone to the gym at least 3 times a week for 20 months and am doing great. Regained 35 pounds. Do 15-20 exercises (weightlifting only) each time. Muscle is health.

Superb! This should be seen by everyone. Although the bodyweight stuff at the end I'm not in agreement with. People are very unlikely to maintain that kind of program with no kind of progressive resistance, and no physical or psychological improvement. People need to weight train, and focus on getting strong. I have a 76 year old lady who had a lot of health issues, could not even stand up straight. But through sensible, consistent training, she worked up to pulling an 80kg deadlift from the floor with competition plates 👌🏼 There is a video on my channel of this. Older people can make truly life changing progress in a very short amount of time. Unfortunately most trainers have no idea what they are doing.

He says a combo or aerobic and lifting. As one ages, which you will, it's more important to do functional exercises that transpose over to everyday movements. And as a side note not all bodybuilding is equal. This isn't about hypertrophy but a realistic muscle composition that will help one do activities of daily living.

Hmmm the opening statement is somewhat unbelievable. If I sit still for 1 hour I naturally expend 60 calories. If I exercise for an hour - he says that increases between 20-30 fold. Which ranges from 1,200 - 1,800 calories. I use my fitness watch when I exercise and even if I push myself into the upper levels of my heart rate for that hour, I will never get near to 1,200 calories. For example, I did a bike ride that lasted an hour. My max heart rate was 178bpm and my average was 134bpm. And yet I only expended 670 calories. So a 10 fold increase.

1:53 Active couch potato 3:38 A 74 year old athlete vs a sedentary 74 year old person -exercise matters; your muscle mass is reduced by 3-8% every decade after the age of 30; 20% exception by training muscles throughout life

Ever since I took up running, I have quite a bit more muscle mass, even in the upper body. It's hard for me to see how one can lose muscle doing endurance sports (when compared to a non-exercising individual).
@rynerlute7510
@rynerlute7510 7 жыл бұрын
Endurance training alone can reduce muscle mass becase it's basically working out for a long time without much rest or any rest at all. It's weight, strength, etc adaptation for that particular activity, so it sounds logical to lose weight to perform better, longer, etc.
@axlrosea675

agreed but my point was that it builds up muscle compared with no exercise. a lot of stability and leg and foot strength is needed for running. but not so much for just sitting in an office all day.

because you dont require much muscle mass for endurance

That's probably because you had very little muscle mass in the first place, and for an exercise to be performed effectively your body adapted more strength (muscle mass). That won't keep happening once you're fully adapted to the low requirements of strength running requires and you will still be considered 'weak - average'. Once your ability gets to a high enough level (eg. marathoner) you'll have hit the point of over doing long duration light activity and your cortisol levels will rise, your testosterone will drop and you'll lose muscle and look like a classic post japanese POW looking pro marathoner.

Well here in Italy the elderly index is already 184. It passed 100 in the late 90's. Btw: drugs are not the only reason we live longer. Tipical "doctor way" to see life. Malnutrition is an umbrella concept. The one we deal here is denutrition and the datas you brought regard overnutrition. There are no real strong datas about poor nutrition in elderly in western countries. The only available fact is unicef report: it's about 5,9% in 2020, and in most of the cases it affects istitutionalized elderly people The fact you live longer because you are stronger (muscled up) is a big bias. You can live better and with less drugs, for sure. Actually, taking datas you didn't show, the best way for living longer is a social contest where we feel loved and cared. Odds are better when you are: -happy -well nourished -active (doing stuff all day long) "B.buiders life style", like someone said, usually is very orthorexic and strict.

this guy is all over the place with the data,not very scientific ... For example .he says that young individuals can lose 5% of muscle mass in 10-14 days if they are lazy in comparison with adults that that Will lose 3,5% every decade no matter what,trying to leave the impression that this is a disastrous scenario .but he avoids saying how fast they can gain that 5% back when the adults cannot !

Matt, have you ever thought about how impressive it is for an elderly person to gain muscle AT ALL given it's almost accepted that they will just slowly lose it as they age. 3% to them could be life changing if they have gone very low on lean muscle mass. They have the time, they are retired and this keeps them active and in the community.

@@Ghrainne I think presentation should be appealing but what I'm saying is that his presentation doesn't have any impact or eye-catching moment. So you are saying that this is convincing enough in Europe? Okay then, I'll accept it but it's not convincing at all in countries where I used to lived. I have lived in some countries for over 10 years but never seen anyone like this before.
