Michael Nader from the Wake Forest Primate Center presents his talk titled The Value of Drug Addiction Research. He suggests that we are approaching the problem of drug addiction in the wrong manner, and we need to reassess our current policies.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Medication is not the way to go long term. It's just a quick fix. it might have it's place. healing addiction is giving the addict a reason to wake up in the morning. see Rat park study- Bruce Alexander.

outstanding. this guy knows his stuff. if anyone wants to look further into this kind of brain imaging as it relates to addiction, i recommend the work of Dr. Nora Volkow

Great talk, Michael, and boy do I agree with the crying need for the allocation of more research dollars!!! Given the anti-science bias (and general scientific ignorance) of America's current administration, it has probably never been more important to spread this message about the short-sightedness of any attempt to balance the budget by cutting out science! We certainly need to find a more effective way to deal with addiction WITHOUT continuing our war on Mental Health sufferers - but I'm not sure if the focus on $$$ (i.e., GNP) alone is the way to go about that. Just a mention - in EVERY instance where $$ is mentioned - that these statistics represent LIVES would be appropriate and, collectively, could change public opinion. Otherwise, we will most likely embrace metrics-justified utilitarian approaches and continue to throw the most vulnerable members of our society under the "just say no" bus. HOWEVER ... if we look at the SAME primate data and ask a different question about stimulants and dopamine receptors, perhaps we'd actually come up with brain-based EVIDENCE of Attentional Disorders that COULD be tested in human beings. But you can't answer questions you don't ask -- or stop framing in a manner that represents cognitive bias. (btw - addiction stats in the ADD community are fascinating -- UN-treated/medicated teen ADDers have high addiction stats -- medicated, they fall right into national norms.) hmmmmm . . . . . xx, mgh (Madelyn Griffith-Haynie - ADDandSoMuchMORE dot com) ADD/EFD Coach Training Field founder; ADD Coaching co-founder "It takes a village to educate a world!"

i have been addicted to cocaine and heroin for 20 years.i went to jail for possession of drugs a few times and it didn't help my addiction one bit. I've also been to almost 30 rehabs and always relapsed after each impatient treatments, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for nothing. i have tried every treatment available and my problem has progressed to a point that i am just barely surviving my days. what can i do?

Jo Goode it's tough. I was addicted to opiates in various forms for 15 years. I am just turning 40yrs of age. I tried for years to get clean. I found a therapist who I connected with. I matured. I am able to feel. I got a number of diagnosis and had therapy for them. I took Suboxone while doing therapy. I meditate often go to NA and smart groups. I don-t know why all this is working now but it is. Trust yourself enough to know what you need and find the people, the right people for u, to help.

How about TEDx having more experts, recovering addicts and pushers who are Black to SHARE stimulating point of views. Plenty of them flowing from prisons and rehabs have compelling stories.

Sounds dumb, but it can work, especially if its a harmless drug, I seen people turn down daily Heroin habit, for a weekly use of psychedelics.
