Yash proposes cultured meat as a sustainable alternative to animal farming for the sake of the environment and food security, but interdisciplinary challenges remain. Yash Mishra is a Co-Founder of Animal Alternative Technologies, which is creating scalable, end-to-end Cultivated Meat manufacturing systems for global food security and sustainability. Yash is also finishing a PhD at the University of Cambridge, creating bioelectronic 3D human Brain-on-a-Chip models, and his work has been showcased at the UK Parliament as ‘frontier and ground-breaking’ research. He is a Biochemical Engineering graduate from University College London with over 6 years of research experience at 3 of the world’s top 10 universities and a multinational pharmaceutical giant. Furthermore, Yash has won gold medals and Best Entrepreneurship at iGEM, the world’s biggest synthetic biology competition, where he is now a Judge. Moreover, Yash is a Lead Author for chapters of 2 textbooks, including the world’s 1st on Cultivated Meat. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I'm a cultivated meat scientist. But cultivated meat is not a solution INSTEAD of urging people to go vegan. It's an effort in addition to.

Interesting. Why would we still have to go vegan if we can eat lab grown meat? As soon as we have lab grown meat I planned to ramp up my meat intake.

Why would you want cultured meat or veganism .Just because some parts of livestock is badly managed .The answer is to farm cleaner .

We could use cultured meat as pet food. The company Because Animals sources cells from mice and rabbits to develop more compassionate and nutritionally adequate food for cats and dogs.

Yes, it’s strange how we torture chicken in factory farms to feed their meat to our dogs, thinking „we love animals“ 😢

This talk is really eye-opening, and I’m so excited for the future of cultured meat after watching this. Also interesting point at the end about the “labels”.

FBS is a by-product of the meat industry. FBS, as with the vast majority of animal serum used in cell culture, is produced from blood collected at commercial slaughterhouses from cattle that also supply meat intended for human consumption.[3] The first stage of the production process for FBS is the harvesting of blood from the bovine fetus after the fetus is removed from the slaughtered cow. The blood is collected aseptically into a sterile container or blood bag and then allowed to clot. The normal method of collection is cardiac puncture, wherein a needle is inserted into the heart. This minimizes the danger of serum contamination with micro-organisms from the fetus itself, and the environment. It is then centrifuged to remove the fibrin clot and the remaining blood cells from the clear yellow (straw) colored serum. The serum is frozen prior to further processing that is necessary to make it suitable for cell culture.[4] The second stage of processing involves filtration, typically using a filtration chain with the final filtration being three sterile 0.1 micron membrane filters. The aseptically processed FBS is subjected to stringent quality control testing and is supplied with a detailed Certificate of Analysis. The certificate gives full test results and information concerning the origin of the serum. Certificates of Analysis vary between commercial suppliers, but each usually includes the following details: filtration statement, country of blood collection, country of manufacture, cell growth performance testing, microbial sterility testing, as well as screening for mycoplasma and virus, endotoxin, hemoglobin, IgG gamma glutamyl transferase[5] and total protein assays. FBS may also be tested for country of collection

I love you for speaking out that we are eating meat from animals who will be missed by their families. I was disappointed and sad by the audience laughing at this. Please know, you have a home here at LabMeatNow! If you ever travel through south Germany, we will invite you for lunch.

The fact is there is enough for everyone and in access. This lab meat is not going to work, unless once can produce meat from grass, as the cow does. Culture meat still needs expensive FBS, that is obtained form calfs that are aborted and this practice gets worst as cows are killed even they are pregnant, and then the calf is killed and FBS is obtained.

@@chuckberry7749 But meat is not gorwn from grass in the lab, and needs lot of FCS, and is has to be expensive grade for food. Do you know anything about FCS and how/where it is obtained?
