Plant-based and cultivated meat are poised to transform the global food system. In an eye-opening talk, food innovator Bruce Friedrich shows how government support can move this industry forward, revolutionizing the way we eat. Bruce Friedrich is cofounder and executive director of The Good Food Institute (GFI), an international nonprofit that is fostering a sustainable, healthy and just agricultural system through food innovation. With branches in the United States, India, Israel, Brazil, Europe and Asia Pacific, GFI is accelerating the production of plant-based and cell-based meat, eggs and dairy in order to bolster the global protein supply while protecting our environment, promoting global health, and preventing food insecurity and animal cruelty.
Friedrich has penned op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Wired and many other publications. He has appeared on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News and a variety of programs on MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN. Friedrich holds distinguished degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

He didn't even mention that animal agriculture makes epidemics and pandemics much more likely. Examples include swine flu, bird flu, SARS, MERS, and possibly this current pandemic. The last pandemic in 1918 originated in a poultry farm here in the USA. Conditions in factory farms are especially problematic.

I don't know what leads ppl to do aweful things, but I have a suspension it has to do with the fact that they lack the experiences I have gone through that have made me more and more compassionate. @Joe Curry yo, I'm not sure if you thought I meant spiritually clean? It wasn't a statement on religion. I meant laboratory meat aka "clean" meat. No cancerous lumps grown into it. No dangerous bacteria or antibiotics. I honestly think if everyone learned about all the edible plants and how to cook them, if we could get that to be common knowledge, fake meats would likely be a rarity in day to day meals. But as the world is, people won't change if they have to compromise on the taste. I hate it, but facts are just that. So if this is how we go about change, and people can get behind this method over oppressing animals, then I'm all for it.

@DJ I tend to disagree. If a person doesn't go all the way, they keep cheating. Like most of the people who try to loose weight can't stop at 1 cookie, they eat a whole package. All the people I know who tried vegan but didn't want to call themselves that, stopped being 'plant based' at some point. Because the temptation is just too big. @@MARISRUBINS i am a doctor. Firstly soy is not nature, so it is genetically engineered. I mean to say made with gram negative bacteria and fungi with the ability to alter DNA. They are latent mostly in the intestines and will cause serious health problems in the future, mostly lysosomal storage diseases. Wheatgrass for example is not the same as wheat grain. All grains are genetically engineered foods, same with tomatoes, sunflower seeds, phyllium husk etc. Plant based anything is not plant and has no nutrients, but will obliterate your body. All life is made of MICROORGANISMS they are responsible for everything. Cell signalling, cell transportation, all nutrients, repair DNA, they are the immune and remove toxins, gram negatives and radiation. Now turn all of that in reverse. Do not i repeat, do not get near bio, or plant based anything, they are all genetically engineered. If the origin of the plant is considered a pest or is aggressive stay away. If you want to eat properly may i suggest you eat your food raw. When you cook you kill the MICROORGANISMS so might as well not eat. Stay away from cow milk. Goat's milk cheese and yoghurt are similar to mother's milk. I hope this helps. This channel is very friendly with Gates, Rockefeller and Bezos, who have invested millions with the Monsanto group, to provide genetically engineered foods. Please watch your supplements also. Anything that says flavouring, salt, protein, added vitamins such as riboflavin b2. STAY AWAY. if you drink bottled water add lemon and use lots of apple mother cider vinegar.

SHAMILIY_SEU224 I completely agree that we need more assistance from the government to make sure that plant-based meat is affordable for every household. In a perceptive speech, food pioneer Bruce Friedrich demonstrates how government assistance can advance this sector and transform how we eat. As is well known, despite the fact that plant-based meat is way healthier, consumers choose to purchase meat products due to the higher cost of plant-based meat. The quality of plant-based meat could be improved, and producers could create much more reasonably priced goods for consumers, if this sector of the economy could receive more funding from the government.

Yes, that is a very good point. The problem is the animal factories, where animals eat soy and grains, for which the soil needs to be plowed, which releases a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere. Pastured animals actually help keeping the CO2 sequestered into the soil. Also the problem with 'eating meat is unhealthy', I guess we need to know what kind of meat are people eating? Grass-fed free range? Or stuffed with soy and antibiotics?

fiona fiona what vegans do not acknowledge is the soil destruction and loss from the grain and bean production. Industrial agriculture has a terrible track record in this regard. The so called “carbon problem” can be solved through soil regeneration and grass field maintenance through animal crop rotation. Incredibly cheaper and higher profits. The dependence on grains as the basis for our food pyramid has caused an obesity epidemic around the world. Obesity and diabetes are killing us with HTN, renal disease, coronary disease, stroke, dementia, and cancer. The idea of excluding meat seems like backwards thinking.

Stating that 'if the government can put 10s of billions of dollars per year in green energy development, they can do the same for cultured meat' is quite a statement to make. Yes, how and what we eat is one of the essential elements of society, but energy is the backbone of society. It's comparing apples and pears. It’s hardly taking care of workers as it’s more holding them over till they all die out. As long as it’s one of the main concerns, but also tend to not be activists or people who will hold their government accountable. (Stemming from usually a lack of education and knowledge) so they will suffer in silence thinking that it’s just how the tide turned for them. Idk. But I would hope that it would go the way you say.
