Even though it is one of the oldest electronic instruments, the theremin is
obscure - but it has had a massive impact on the world. In this combination
of talk and performance, pop singer and thereminist Clara Venice
demonstrates why the theremin is a milestone invention, and explains this
magical instrument's tremendous influence on 20th century pop culture.
Pop singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and romantic - Clara Venice is Canada’s Theremin Prodigy. Clara is one of the only people in the world who plays the Theremin as a proper instrument, which adds an emotional and haunting diversity to her music.
Clara composes ethereal futurepop, with whimsical narratives about spacey love connections. Her live performances include a must-see set design with a virtual band of hologlamorous personas, interactive Theremin-controlled lighting, planetary projections, and awe-inspiring landscapes that morph throughout the show.
Clara has performed around the world, opening for renowned acts such as the Violent Femmes and Carole Pope. She joined the Barenaked Ladies on their 2014 Cross-Canada tour, and has been showcased at The One Man Band Festival, Just for Cats Festival, Kazoo Fest, Word on the Street, NXNE, Spur Festival, IngenuityFest, and Beakerhead.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

for those interested in theremin playing, look into carolina eyck. she invented a playing technique that allows playing every note in an octave just by stretching her hand and fingers. she legitimized teaching and playing the theremin and has played on hundreds of venues ranging from solo acts to playing with full orchestra

It's not just human minds that change things, either, which I find amazing. I find it funny that I am also attracted to animals that ironically sound like the theremin, such as the white handed gibbon, the white cheeked gibbon, and marmoset monkeys) yet even years before I knew these animals sounded like that I was creating alien creatures that sounded like them, or rather a theremin. When I discovered that it made me even more eager to get a theremin. Now I have a theremin...in a house that has 8 keyboards in it...except the one I'm using to type this message.

what does that nonsense have to do with anything? humans NEED art, humans have created art since before written history, a musical instrument would enrich pretty much every human that interacts with it on their own terms

She's probably a trekkie (because StarTrek opening theme reference), plays theremin, and feels free enough to have nicely multicolored hair, and she sounds passionate about what she talks about. I think the universal language of music would make it possible for us, me and her to have a long chat. (translation for those who don't get metaphors: I like making and listening to variety of music to so we could have an inspiring electronic music jamming).

I realize that you're much too young to remember, but probably the most well-known use of this instrument amongst us more "seasoned" individuals is Jimmy Page using the Theramin with Led Zeppelin way back in '69 on the Led Zeppelin 2 album song "Whole Lotta Love". I cannot agree with the thematic around the BIG influence of the Theremin over music. Because, the truth about high pitches notes is linked to slide guitar first. Why? Because this music coming from Hawaii was the first to hit the ear of the public audience and even if the Theremin been invented in the 20's, the best Hawaiian musicians had already over 20/25 years of practice, to the point of being a global and huge musical influence around the world. There is also another instrument having shaped the ear of the musiciens : The musical saw. That being said, the theremin is a beautiful instrument, a wonderful invention !!

i think the influence was more about the technical side & then the massive influence that moog synths have had, imagine if robert moog wasnt exposed to or built one when he was a kid kind of like transistors or semiconductors, it took decades for the computing influence to happen due to newer computing paradigms, but none of that can exist without the original functional components

I'm fascinated by the Theremin as i am and Electronics Technicain but i do find it hard to believe its changed the world especially when hardly a soul knows what it is. It's more an extraterrestrial instrument in my opinion. Alien UFO Technology - AUT.
@kn00tcn
@kn00tcn 4 жыл бұрын
it was the start of robert moog's career, so THAT is what changed the world, not the theramin itself, but that it existed as a trigger
@Stoney3K
@Stoney3K 4 жыл бұрын
There's a different way it changed the world, because it wasn't designed as a musical instrument. The Russians built it under a defense research project for proximity sensing, basically, a very primitive form of radar. And that turned into a musical instrument, with the electronics inside that instrument being used for mass production of AM radio receivers and subsequently anything that did down-mixing of RF for the rest of the century. And the principle of using capacitive sensing for proximity detection to open doors and trigger lights, or localizing a person's finger on, let's say, a screen, is something that is in everybody's pocket today.
@kimbal1958
@kimbal1958 4 жыл бұрын
@@Stoney3K Interesting - Thankyou. I can also see the similarity of the Theremin with metal detection devices as well, however no material I've read about it even mentions its link to these other areas of electronics.

Lucas Wide When she is quoting what others are saying its not - all TED talks are* because people must establish their status to an audience that may not know them. Unless you knew about who she was WHY would she be an Expert? thats something that ted talks do better then most* I mean with No introduction and no red arrows in thumb nails getting millions of views on a large number of videos featuring diffrent people in many places and so often they have ti have something of a Formul and I think what they look for is that voice of authority.
