I stopped doing art after college because teachers in high schooled college said my art wasn't good. I always loved the classes because I felt free no matter how bad my paintings were...but Those critiques hurt terribly and I stopped doing it the I got out of college. I cried during this talk. I AM going back to doing art, because it's fun for me, to heck with what those who taught be said! And I am just 70!

I'm 66 and decided to set my art spirit free last year. I cleared out a spare room which is now a room of chaos of art supplies including rocks I gather on the beach and twigs I gather on my walks. I go in, close the door, turn up my favorite music, and see what emerges ... I now have walls covered in all sorts of drawings, paintings, mixed media. I look at my walls and think, "Wow. Where has that been hiding all these years?" I've been introducing my 5 year old grandson to getting messy with art and we hang every one of his paintings too! I love Charlie's message of, "It's fine to make a mess and a very brave thing to do."

When I came home w my first painting, at 10, of a church, in acrylic, my first art class, my dad said “it doesn’t matter that the lines were crooked, it’s art class”. His saying that told me that it did matter. I hadn’t noticed they were crooked. I was so proud to have a painting on canvas first it was charcoal drawing. My mom said, you can still see the charcoal but maybe you’re not finished yet. I was finished. It took me until menopause to paint again. Parents can be joy killers even if their intention is to instruct. Allow joy!

it’s amazing how the idea of the mess really shines through him. Like - he came in late, unprepared and just said what he had to say - a very simple thought but he was wandering his own thoughts during the talk, telling some stories, bringing the dogs, I’ve never seen a ted talk like this before. the talk was an actual mess, and that’s what he came to say and I LOVE that. Also if you haven’t read his book I really really recommend it. It’s healing, kind and heartwarming and truly makes you feel worth something.

I listened to this Ted talk with interest, I already really liked his work and hearing him speak made sense of how he is able to pack so much emotion into his drawings. I loved the connection with messiness and creativity, also the importance of keeping imagination alive, it can have so many helpful uses for our wellbeing, and facilitate creative thinking in other areas of life.

I have never cried so much from a Ted talk. It made me realized that we all repress that inner mess. Instead of embracing it like the child crying out for its mother. May I embrace the mess of a self. May I love the mud because without mud there is no lotus.

I never gave up. People didn’t quite like that about me. But that’s what we all go through. Not everyone will support you. Some will say mean things sometimes. When you succeed you must be grateful for what they taught you. I’m a esthetician and massage therapist and double caregiver to my mom and son and convinced my partner we should buy my parents house. He had a warm home to be when he battled cancer and beat it. Winter time by a warm fire and health was a blessing. My son has autism and was third time on the honor roll!

Mess is usually more authentic than perfection. 'Art IS therapy' is my mantra; it makes us whole by aknowledging the wonder of life from within.

Yes. We go crazy trying to build symmetries, intricacies, and ideals into things, and messiness always works its way in. Not to say we shouldn't keep trying, but to a point we also need to embrace the symmetries, intricacies, and ideals that work their way into every mess, even if it's only our personal perception that puts them there--if we can just show that, we can convey quite a bit.

I remember a time when I loved drawing so much, it was my existance. Ive feel lost, lately. I want to keep doing this thing I loved so much... I used to draw horses all day, every day. I have a young family now and my spark has been misplaced in all the busy, rushing around. Ill find it again. Its a transition. Just ordered charlies book. Cant wait to read it!

I teach Christian iconography and tell those in our workshops all the time that there are no mistakes. Icons are prayers and everyone's comes out different - that's where the Divine shows up. A member of our painting community sent this to me and he's right on! A wonderful testimony to shutting up that inner critic. We need more mess making in our hurting world.

I opened a paint your own ceramic shop years ago. It was for all ages. It was the adults that got uptight. I remember one particular man, an attorney. He had come for a Christmas party given by his office, to paint ceramic ornaments. By accident he had held his ornament upside down and was absolutely devastated when he got it back after it was fired and realized his mistake. I think a lot of the adults have been told at some point that their art was no good. I’ve heard stories of teachers who absolutely leveled some students to the point where they were just stunted in this area.

@@charliemackesy5342 so Charlie, I live in a place where the town motto was, ‘Bluffton a State of Mind’, just over the bridge inland from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It once was incredibly charming, unspoiled, haven for aquatic life along the May River, underdeveloped and peaceful. However, for those of us here long enough to remember those lazy days most are saddened by the short amount of time commerce and transplants all but bulldozed the area and it is all quite different now. So that’s my pity party. Onto the people. Charlie, probably no different than any other tourist spot with an eclectic mix of characters, some you wish to know, some you do not. The kind ones attract me as those I wish to know. We really need it now as the world’s seemingly gone mad and kindness has been of short supply. I’ll stop now. Oh, listened to the audio book today. It was pure oxygen. Thank you-D

The messages here are profound, and all the better for not being told in the usual TED formulaic style. Instead they are told from the heart, thank you @charliemackesy5342 As one who was told "art is not my thing" as a child, I look forward to finding time to make a mess. If not through art then in other exploratory ways; my work and research focusses on the Imposter Syndrome (technically a phenomenon) where there is a strong desire to be perfect, do our best and get things right first time. It can be hard to let go of a lifetime of operating one way, but it can also be liberating. Starting to embrace mistakes, learning (not failing), showing vulnerability and thereby creating connection is a very healthy way forward for 2023 and beyond. With thanks to Charlie ❤
