In our world, things often seem much more complex than they really are, and we sometimes need to strip back the confounding layers that hide the simple principles about how things work.
Music is a wonderful analogy for the world around us and in this talk Linsey strips back those layers and show us how music can be created from very simple components.
Music is an art form that is all about creation, about connection, about Community and it is something that we can all do because we are all musicians. …….we can all sing ……AND we can all make a musical instrument.
Linsey Pollak is a musician, instrument maker, composer, musical director and community music facilitator, touring his solo shows extensively in Europe, North America and Asia since 1996. He has designed many new wind instruments with a reputation for making and playing instruments made from found objects such as rubber gloves, carrots, watering cans, chairs, brooms and garden hose.
Linsey aims to de-commodify the art of music and dreams of a society that doesn’t have a word for musician, because everyone plays music (just as we don’t use the word “breather” because we all breathe). He believes that music can build a more creative society that enjoys and respects the contributions of many cultures, empowering the marginalised and bringing disparate people together. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As you see we cannot make a clarinet from an a4 paper because we haven't got a clarinet mouth.

Very creative. But I prefer Classical instruments with a classical sound. If only I could afford a clarinet. Could he make me a clarinet or show me how to make a Classical clarinet? That sounds like a Classical clarinet without spending thousands?

Clarinets sell for $250 dollars. They're a super cheap beginning instrument.

Actually the paper clarinet he made would sound very close to a baroque chalumeau or a classic clarinet without the electronic microphone he had on the mouth piece. The only part you do need to buy is a clarinet or a soprano or alto saxophone mouthpiece.

You need keys for classical instruments, but you can get good starter clarinets for hundreds rather than thousands. There even some OK ones that are less than a hundred dollars---but you can't make one out of paper. Hard to mount keys on paper. Plastic works well, however, and gives a decent sound.

What he made has the holes in position to sounds like a duduk. A Middle eastern sounding. Different positions of The holes make different modes and different soundings. But stick to buy One. He has a lot of practise and What he did is not meant to Last, specially in the hands of a beginner. Peace and enjoy.

@@megavidaeos It is not. A clarinet has a register key. It has a _clarion_ register. This is a chalumeau by definition.
