Dr. Sean Gourley is the founder and CTO of Quid. He is a Physicist by training and has studied the mathematical patterns of war and terrorism. This research has taken him all over the world from the Pentagon, to the United Nations and Iraq. Previously, Sean worked at NASA on self-repairing nano-circuits and is a two-time New Zealand track and field champion. Sean is now based in San Francisco where he is building tools to augment human intelligence.
Description of Talk:
Each year computers are getting faster, but at the same time we as humans are getting better at using them. The top chess players in the world are not humans OR computers, but combinations of humans AND computers. In this talk, Sean Gourley examines this world of augmented intelligence and shows how our understanding of the human brain is shaping the way we visualize and interact with big data. Gourley argues that the world we are living in is too complex for any single human mind to understand and that we need to team up with machines to make better decisions.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I like to revisit it, doing a little social experiment by sharing it to my socials and seeing how people react to it now, seeing where humanity has progressed. I love that we can conduct these little AB tests in minutes for fractions of pennies. What a fascinating time to be alive.

He's exited to be part of it he says.... but as history sows us, this technology will end up in the hands of the powers that be, the conglomerates and multinationals and governments... and they will control movements (political, markets, social, or otherwise), and trends, because these diverse powers always think they know better even as they narrow in on their small portion of interest. So I hope (not much!) that the people creating this technology will not be solely motivated by monetary goals. They (He at least in this video) seem to be aware of all these potential problems, as Einstein WAS aware of the potential of his ideas being used to create destructive technology but that didn't stop him fro moving forward, it never has that I know of, once it is created the powers WILL take it away from the inventors! Why can't they see that? But not inventing it doesn't see to be a viable option.

It's the ideal correlation clearinghouse for journalists who, like medical doctors have at least a nominal code of behaviour. Mortality and Ethics are more than a good warm and fuzzy feeling, they are rules of behaviour that affect group success or failure. So to restore the effectiveness and efficiency of democracy...?

lol. One day I will upload my coloured fiber tip pen on paper equivelent models/graphs into a computer and stun them all. I think that by the time they develop this, it will be outdated. My money would be on researching awareness before the mind forms it into thought, or physical brain activity, which is something I doubt any artificial intelligence will ever be able to achieve. Good luck tho, very interesting, pioneering work in the field of human limitations.

Yes we can't be computers at strategic games like Gallagher. I know many people that have completely gone past the highest level on galego level 255 every time they play ..Deep blue the dart really beat Garry Kasparov it was a team of 6 grand masters posing as computer programmers. D blue did not win on its own

And as for a comment relevant to the video, I stopped watching it after his anecdote about Galaga because he goes over the story while missing the fundamental fact that video games aren't any measure of intelligence any further than a person solving the puzzles and situations that another person, or group of people, has laid out in specific form for others to solve. It's basically solving other people's problems. Computers are not faster than human minds, and computers are not smarter than humans.

As he moves through his presentation, he appears increasingly bitter towards the crowd for not giving him the applause breaks he seems to have expected. Novice Public Speakers, take note: a presentation is not a conversation, and a silent audience is not being rude and inattentive. Plow ahead, don't keep telling us that you "think that's pretty cool" in an attempt at getting a verbal response...crowds not made up of 10 year olds don't respond to that.

You know what's interesting? When I hear these futurist (Ray Kurzweil) speak of brain augmentation. Really? I can spend hours, days, months and even years studying a new subject, get a degree in it and simply forget about a 1/3rd of it a little while later, and when I recall something "I should know" its sort of unclear. So how in the world will people be able to summons the internet with their minds? what will the see? I can't even remember what I dreamt about last night. and we are to believe that they will have total recall!?! Really?

Augmenting intellignece is unethical and wrong. It is unethical for numerous reasons, those of which include attempting to impose upon the privacy and sense of identity required for human perception by attempting to augment intelligence with something that isn't the human equal, and it is subtly yet incredibly wrong to believe that a machine, could in any way augment intellignece any further than just providing information at a faster rate, but cannot do anything further to brain capacity. Do you know what that would do for people in college? How that would be a means to cheat? How that could be so easily weaponized? It is technology that shouldn't even be funded for research, let alone put into use. Anyone who says it is okay to impose an internet-connected machine onto people, or try to use machines to augment intelligence, must be questioned, and dismissed, as unethical and foolish because to believe that that is okay is to take for granted perception itself.
