The problem with the mainstream media is not one of putting out things that are not factually true, it is what mainstream media selects as newsworthy, and worse, what it chooses not to report. A second problem is the mixing of commentary with news. Each night before I watch the news, I already know what the take-away will be depending on which station I am watching. The words that are used to describe a story communicate a commentary. Shocking disclosure as opposed to this person said…. Cold blooded killer as opposed to this person defending himself. It is impossible to discuss race relationships or gender differences without somebody being accused of hate speech or bigotry. The version of “fake news” that the mainstream media practices is only telling one side of the story, or not telling a story at all if it does not pass the political correctness test.

@@uriahhammock3731 couldn't agree more. :) I miss the days when folks talked to one another with civility on politics. That said, don't lose hope! I've had very constructive debates with a handful (okay less than that. Thinkers on political matters on KZbin are getting hard to find since a lot of what gets thrown out to be discussed is our reactions, our beliefs, and many of us are loathe to betray them) of people. Even a firearms enthusiast the one time. If someone is informed enough to make a good point, then I say, let them make it. I will listen, and even learn. Unfortunately (as you can see 1 post up), some folks don't give much a damn about that though. But the jokes ultimately on them. Trick is, don't let them guide the discussion, and continue to engage with the more thoughtful, constructive, and helpful individuals. It's not hard to find the good guys, just look for the ones who still treat people like people, rather than a rival in a wrestling match. Takes expertise that we don't have to determine anyone's legitimacy ("bot or not?"), or help them find a better way forward, so let's simply lead by example instead of sinking down into the murk.

The clear implication - that “he” should not be asked to disclose his source because he’s not a cub reporter, and c’mon, he’s accountable for his reporting - borders on arrogance. A junior reporter is also accountable, and equally risks dismissal for “fake news”. Unfortunately, seniority - equating as it does with “power” - all too often trails in a level of haughtiness - it seems to be a given of the human condition.

One of my all time favorite Ted talks. When I was in High school, formal debate was considered a core competency skill and therefore successful participation in live debates was mandatory. I am fairly certain that there is not a single extroversion trait to be found in my gene pool, possibly crowded out by the very strong genetic propensity for Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorder. Active participation in public debate was nothing short of torture for me and I am sure I would have avoided it at any cost had I had that option. I don't know when Public Debate was officially removed from the list of core competencies required to earn a high school diploma but I believe that doing so was a grave mistake and we are already witnessing the first negative consequences. Social platforms have expanded the opportunity to participate in meaningful, public debate for nearly every human alive, while search engines have made it possible to gather mountains of information on any subject, limited only by the individual's internet research skill set. Logic says we should be the most enlightened, least gullible population in recorded history. Why then, do we seem to be actively trying to "devolve" by rejecting well-established fact and generations of accumulated knowledge in favor of base level tribalism, willful ignorance, and a brutal "might makes right" moral code? Fear? Laziness? Stress and Sensory overload? Magnetic pole reversal? CIA mass mind control? Corporate scumbaggery? I can't shake off an uneasy feeling that our continued existence on this planet may depend on our determining who or what is responsible for the dramatic decline of personal integrity and basic human kindness and eliminating the source.

He didn’t acknowledge the reasons why people are losing faith in traditional media. He did acknowledge a Reporter refusing to ask the tough questions because they want the guest to return. He didn’t acknowledge a media outlet refusing to run a story Because it would upset the share holders. He did acknowledge that the owner of the media outlet has the final say on what is newsworthy and not the reporter. He did not acknowledge that corporations are so rich and the System is so corrupt they can purchase the media outlets to control the narrative.

Haha you waited couple minutes there to expose your anti western bias. Times changed, we no longer trust 'experts' like you, these days we only trust our friends. And to know whos my friend i listen to my gut feeling, not 'smart' guy's elaborations. I feel Trump is my friend as he shares similar values i do, and of course every politician and journalist is biased these days, but doesn't it make sense to support someone whos bias is in your favour?

Ali I respect you as a speaker but holding Chuck Todd up as an example of good journalism takes a lot of cherry picking, he's a large part of the reason people don't trust MSNBC (and I'm not talking about conservatives I'm talking about liberals who don't trust his journalism
