NOTE FROM TED: Please consult a medical professional and do not look to this to as a substitute for medical advice. The health effects of breast implants remain an emerging field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
As women, there are parts of us that inform our sense of feeling divinely feminine, and our own bodies are often emblematic of our womanhood. So what happens when a significant aspect of your own body turns toxic? Confronted with that very reality, Lacie Marie made the difficult decision to not only have her breast implants removed due to toxicity, but also chose to have her entire breasts removed because of genetic markers for cancer. Lacie Marie shares her amazing story of making the difficult decision, learning how to accept herself and reclaim her femininity beyond the social expectations of how a woman is "supposed" to be shaped. Boobless and Fabuless is her mantra. Lacey Marie believes flatter is better. After years of dealing with seemingly random health issues and being near death, she discovered it was all connected to the size of her breasts. Lacey learned she had Breast Implant Illness, plus two genetic markers for breast cancer so she made the decision to have both her implants and her breast removed.
Through this process, she realized there’s a gross lack of resources and support for Breast Implant Illness, which has empowered her to use her story and advocate for more women to become Boobless and Fabuless. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am a 34B. And I have been pressured to have implants by 2 boyfriends in the past. I broke up with both men, due to the pressure of looking a particular way. I am now 58, very healthy and a “perfect” 34B. I will not change my body image to preserve a relationship.. men wouldn’t do it for their women! Double standards come to mind!!

I feel ridiculous. I’ve been so depressed and upset because I’m a 32A, and sometimes I don’t even fill up the A cup. I’ve been thinking about getting implants, solely so that I’ll feel more attractive. But listening to your story has changed my mind. It will take time for me to learn to love myself, but now I’m just grateful that I’m healthy. Thank you so much for sharing.

Make sure your actions match your words; I’ve been with men who tell me they loved my chest as it is, but their search history was full of boobs that looked nothing like me and it has crushed my soul. I can’t believe the words that come out of their mouths when their actions seem to negate them.

Thank you for sharing. I’m going through the same thing. I had textured saline implants implanted at the age of 19, 2 years ago I found out the implants were recalled because of bia-alcl- a (cancer of the immune system )I’m now 31 and started to feel the same symptoms of bii around the age 28 after having 2 children.. I blamed it on chasing the kids around just being tired and exhausted having small headaches , sometimes anxiety , joint pain (maybe I’m using my hands too much with household mom duties.) but no.. I’ve decided to make an appointment to have them exchanged , but then realized I’m just gonna have the same problem with a different implant down the road. I have an appointment April 6 to have them explanted completely.. I can’t wait to start feeling better and get my life back! Any implant made of plastic is poison and foreign to the body and it slowly kills ! Please be aware. Learn from our stories !!

We easily blame men for having an expectation...a desire, a fantasy. It is us as women who are at fault for buying into that, teaching our girls that there is a standard of beauty and we are not it unless we dye it, cut it, implant it, fill it stretch it, remove it, squeeze into it, starve. It has to stop, we are the only ones who can say "nope" we are the only ones who can say "this is the standard of beauty, kindness, a healthy body that I cherish for its perfect imperfections, the love I have inside me, my thoughts, my mind, my vision, my accomplishments, my dreams..." Don't be afraid ladies, don't be afraid young women, don't be fooled little girls, you deserve to be loved and cherished just the way you are.

Excellent point and advice. This is the same reason I’ve been single for 15+ years and don’t date. Sure, I’ve had short flings here and there but I’ve learned that sadly, most men are poison. Many women whose reach the age of 100+ and are happy, healthy and vibrant either divorced young and never remarried or have never been married. There’s something to be said about what men do to women’s mental & physical health. Therefore, if you can only attract men if you fit their idea of what’s beautiful, screw them. Do what makes you happy & don’t worry about “attracting” men. They’re not worth the time. Trust me. ☺️

I racked up thousands of dollars of ER visits and specialists. All my friends said it was all in my head. I dropped them all! I removed mine the best decision I ever made of my LIFE!

Great talk, so moving. You are so beautiful in every way possible! It's insane what us women have to suffer through in this life. I wasn't actively planning on getting surgery, but in the back of my mind it has always been a vague possibility. Definitely not anymore
