Well how hard is it to be kind to yourself.... is it because you absolutely have no choice and have to keep pushing . Now you are suffering.... so now you see that you have to learn to pace yourself instead of making yourself feel like a horse that has been run into the ground . often when we give ourselves a little bit of time and space.... it somehow allows us to become more efficient and even create more time and space and creativity and joy . there's a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things.. have you never heard of the Middle Way.... don't be an extremist... be kind to yourself.... if we cannot be good to ourselves how can we be good to others. It's a little bit different if of course you are at a point in your life where you absolutely have no choice and have to keep working and are not able to get any breaks . but that is not a good way to live and I went through it for years . But to not take breaks when you have earned them and need them doesn't even make sense.... that is why it's called counterproductive . Please get the rest that you need and never feel guilty about it again . and most importantly do not let others make you feel guilty about it

Why would anybody feel guilty about a much-needed break or rest... is this abuse that is put on you people by others like a boss or a spouse or your family members ? Or are you just doing this to yourself and treating yourself like a dog.. why would anybody do that to themselves .... be kind to yourself .

This made me cry…My mental health was not taken seriously in high school and my teachers thought I was only trying to ditch and they stopped giving counsel and would send me back to class whenever I needed a break and talk to someone. I ended up attempting suicide and would be in and out of hospitals. When I had to eventually go back to school my condition still wasn’t taken seriously, so I decided to use drugs as a coping mechanism and almost completely dropped out of high school. I graduated over a year late after my mom pulled me from that high school and got me in to an alternative school that had a compassionate staff and all they wanted was for their students to get better. A lot of people were in my boat and I felt supported in a way public school could never do for me… 6 years later I am now in my 3rd semester of college with a 4.0 gpa and my mental health is at the best it’s ever been. It takes compassionate and caring individuals to be good teachers. This young woman is doing amazing things for the educational community!

This video really resonated deeply with me as I also believe good mental health is the true key to success in every aspect of actively pursuing a career in medicine. Physical health for obvious reasons will always be at the forefront of what is considered more “serious” because a lot of acute illnesses can lead to tragic consequences and lifelong illnesses lead to a sequela of chronic complications and/or death that can be mitigated if caught early enough and treated responsibly before health effects are irreversible. Hailey makes amazing points that with suicide being the second leading cause of death in teenagers, mandating laws that require schools to designate a certain number of mental health days to students is a major step in the right direction. For some reason, it seems that the older we get, the need for mental health support seems less important. While schools/organizations/workplaces offer mental health support services and try to incorporate ways to ensure that mental health support is being implemented, the quality of these services is unfortunately lackluster. I believe at the graduate school level, our administrators have a duty to ensure the best mental health support. Programs such as medical school, law school, obtaining a PhD or whatever graduate level degree one is trying to obtain is a long and stressful journey. No one goes into these fields truly understanding the commitment and sacrifice one will have to make as much as we think we do; there is nothing that can prepare you for it. Medical schools need to allocate mental health days per organ system/block that are separate from the days off allocated for other things such as emergencies or physical health/sick days. I believe these should not be allocated based on a student’s standing either as some of these students may be near academic difficulty status because they are not able to get the mental support they need. You made an amazing point in your video stating that not everyone who needs mental health support has an official diagnosis and I agree that these supportive resources and days off should still be provided as a means to prevent worsening of any mental states.

I am normally a mostly A student, but I almost failed half of my classes last semester because I was sick for a week, and I ended up unable to successfully make up everything I missed plus I did poorly on tests from missing the instructions on how to do the things taught in class. Suicide: self induced termination of one's own life. In a young person this is a tragedy of enormous proportions. Why? Because as a young person there is always the possibility that a solution to their problem is just around the corner. Tomorrow may change the situation and provide a solution. To end your life at a young age removes the possibility of a solution or recovery and consequently a long enjoyable life. In an older person who has lived a full life, and accepted their inevitable mortality, ending one's life may not be a tragedy, in fact I think it is their unalienable right and may be a relief to their suffering. So there is this spectrum from tragedy when young to a right when older and of course all the shades in between. This is where the absolutists get it wrong. Whether suicide is right or wrong depends on the persons circumstances, of which age is a large factor. Lastly the next obvious question is at what age does the tragedy become a right? The answer is that there is no specific age, rather it is a gradual change from one to the other, and again how fast this change occurs depends on the individuals circumstances. To deny an elderly person the right to die when they have decided enough is enough is an arrogance of the most odious kind. For a younger person to decided that they know what is better for an elderly person is just pure arrogance and they should consider showing some respect for the older wiser person. The younger person should also consider that they may become wise and elderly with the passage of time, if they are fortunate, and with the arrival of that wisdom they might change their minds and wish to have the option to terminate their own lives.

I love the Ted-talks. They educate things as common sense of which I thought that I was alone with this understanding. I did not know for example how valid my feeling of being mentally coroded might be. Thank you, Ted-x Ps. Her surname is just the best! 😄

I suffered from sleep disorder and mental illness since 9 years old. That's was no support from even my doctors. It became manic depression. And due to the death cells in my brain and spine it caused partial paralysis. Now my ALS retaled mental will shut down my organs eventually. PAREN5 PLEASED PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH. And then there is my school which is basically like "if u can't keep ur life together and are overwhelmed, you should stop coming here because it is to hard for you" and instead of take a mental health day / break they go like "stop being so extra, do it or leave it, psych is something that doesn't belong in school" Like I love my school but I hate their thinking about mental issues and how they not even try to handle it or help in any way.

I think to a large extent the term "mental health" is a way for the psychotherapy and psychiatry industries to sell services. You could call the same issues "spirituality" or "self-awareness" or "personal growth".

I go to school in Oregon. I have NEVER had more than one day per year to learn about mental health, but, the last time I was taught about mental health was in 5th grade and I am currently in 8th

Bruh they teach you about mental health. We are not even told what mental health is in the Indian Education System.

I find myself in a situation almost exactly the same as hers when she was younger. By the age of just 5-6 I was having horrible thoughts of death and existentialism. I was what you would call a “pessimistic nihilist.” I had horrible anxiety issues when that started, and I never realized what it was. Then when I was 7 my clinical depression started. I would fantasize about killing myself. Even going as far as to choke myself, in hopes that it would work as a placeholder for a noose. I of course didn’t know that it was physically impossible to kill myself with those means. When I turned 11 I finally started to accept that I wasn’t okay, and eventually I was able to tell people about it. I’m not currently suicidal anymore, which is a plus, but depression has instead affected my motivation 1000-fold. It’s insane. To the untrained eye everyone would think I was lazy, but in reality I was just depressed and unmotivated. It was almost impossible to get out of bed, and doing actual schoolwork was 100 times worse. It has gotten to the point where I’ll go days, or even weeks without doing any sort of schoolwork because it’s so hard. It’s like a steel wall preventing me from just sitting down and starting on getting things done. I absolutely love school. I love learning, but it’s so hard. When I do eventually get motivation to do things, I can only get maybe 4-5 things done before I reach my limit. I wish everyone, including me, had caught on before it got to this point but now I have way too long of a road to getting back to normal.

Mental health is getting worse and I am glad some states have made a step in the right direction. I see so many high school students just being mentally exhausted and have heard teachers say they are tired of students being lazy. When in reality our system needs improvement so we can create a better future. One where teen sucide rates stop increasing and where we can all thrive.

Congratulations, what you said is very important and necessary, I have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), I already tried to commit suicide, a little over four years after I entered university, I also already had depression twice, and I also tried to commit suicide, I tried three times, but the third attempt wasn't quite an attempt, unfortunately I'm spending a lot on my mental health and I'm unemployed, but it may be that the Lord Jesus Christ someday either heals me or comes to eliminate the symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in me, you are a person who it is helping many other people.

Unfortunately, our Environment has become so Selfish & Self Centred, which arnt truthful, it's what we're fake portraying cuz of constant Societal Pressure. And no doubt 80% of suicide cases are committed only cuz of Mental Health Conditions. Me as a student, age 20, diagnosed with Anixety, can absolutely understand & feel the conditions.
