Imagine a world where the data about a thing is more valuable than the thing itself. That world is closer than you may think. As cars, appliances, and other devices are equipped with sensors, you may be able to trade that data for money and drastically reduce the cost of purchasing just about anything. This has profound implications for the business of making cars and other things. It means that cars aren’t just cars anymore; they are vehicles for the delivery of data.
John Ellis is an expert in Big Data and how it will change the business models of the world’s leading sectors like transportation, insurance, telecommunications, government, and home building. From 2012 to 2014, he was Ford Motor Company’s global technologist and head of the Ford Developer Program. Prior to that, John was an executive at Motorola Inc., where he delivered wireless software products and services to the mobile industry.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

He makes great points, but I don't want to live in a society, where privacy is only allowed to the people who can afford it.

I had to re-watch parts of this to fully unpack what's being advocated for here. It's a rather disconcerting picture of a future that we face going forward. I wonder who will be buying the data if most every facet of the economy starts selling it, having discounted their products and services to gather it. Also, I don't think people are going to be fond of having their conversations recorded for a cheaper car. As for the solution: I do kinda worry about the masses. If only the wealthy are able to afford to buy privacy. That's some dystopic stuff 😟

Automakers aren't gonna provide discounts for sensors. They'll install the sensors and keep the data payments for themselves. If you want a new car you'll have to take it with sensors or you don't get a new car. Is your phone for free? You already think phone makers don't sell data? It's not getting passed on to cuatomers

Great idea but I am skeptical about how much they will pay for data from each of those sensors...maybe I am wrong.

I am more scared about the price the average person is going to pay. The smart cities and internet of things will monitor every aspect of our lives. What we do, where we go, what we eat, buy, our health, what we see, hear, think and even dream will be monitored and meta data will be collected, leaving us a with totally transparent, zero privacy society.

And since the average person does not typically have a seat at the table where "full price options" are determined, brace for the time when the general public can not afford to choose privacy! Will this be the beginning of monetizing all other human privileges and rights in the hands of (don't hate on me for this) corporations!?! At least let's make sure we get to drive a model S for zero dollars not a Focus!!!

Never happen, the auto maker would keep rights to sensor data and sell it. Just like when you visit any site like FB and Googl

So can I pay the CIA & NSA to not record everything I say or do? And where do I sign up?
