Dr Dory, I just finished reading your book and couldn’t stop wetting my eyes! I had to take off my eyeglasses many times because they were got foggy! What a book you’ve written! It will give a lot of disadvantaged a hope and a new life, they would become compassionate, understanding oneself and others as well as not being selfish just a few to mention! I’ve suffered my growing up due to the circumstances I had and still couldn’t get over it, however your book, Into the Magic shop, changed my view of the world around me! Dr. Doty makes an excellent argument about compassion and how it can improve the lives of all. Relating this idea of compassion more to the doctor/patient relationship I think we can improve all aspects of healthcare. The focus should be on the relationships we form. Doctors and patients can only work together if they trust each other. This is idea is also backed by research as Dr. Doty mentions. The more compassionate we are as doctors or patients the healthcare outcomes improve across the board. Being compassionate requires a deep understanding of the patient’s needs and experiences. Physicians take an ethical oath before they start practicing medicine and the easiest way that this oath can be upheld is simply by being more compassionate. For healthcare to improve in any way it needs to start at the fundamentals of human interactions.

Now, let us look at some ways how a person can enhance and increase their compassion and kindness. On a practical level, most people think of themselves first. And then perhaps some relatives and friends. This is often where it ends. In order to cultivate compassion and kindness, a person can make a commitment to try to do some random acts of kindness to at least one other living being every day. Without expecting anything in return. We should not want to be acknowledged, rewarded or even thanked. The more a person do this, the more they will like it. It actually feels really nice because it is in harmony with our spiritual nature to be kind and compassionate.

When it comes to Jim Doty I think a good consideration to keep in mind is:"How you are speaks so loudly I can hardly hear what you say." Having said that, it is still a good thing that someone of his disposition could be attempting a course correction by considering personal development. His authority on the topic, however, is academic at best, as he does not truly embody the ideals or growth of the individuals/examples he is apt to cite. When you see a disconnect of this kind between embodiement and advertisement, you may be observing a form of virtue signaling or "development by proclaimed association." It is hard to gauge whether this is his attempt at redeeming sociopathic tendencies or leveraging them in old game of false "propheteering."

Don't feminists agree with preventing a life from forming fully that has already been conceived if the woman who is carrying that child chooses? He judged Republicans stating they knew nothing about the reproductive system. How does he really know that? How is that compassionate? How is destroying a conceived child compassionate? I'm just confused by this entire talk. This just didn't seem like a talk on the science of compassion to me, but his own warped views from his sad and unfortunate childhood.

God bless you. I agree we are made for compassion but I find some of your titles interesting labels and forms of one perspective in life. I believe we are made in the image and likeness of God (love/compassion) and that Free Will is the greatest gift given to all. You get to do what you want and think how you want. Everyone is called to respect the free will/human dignity of others. I choose to praise the Almighty with my life because God has revealed Himself to me. I understand why some don't believe in Jesus (no experiences) but I also know that God is the gift giver. I don't believe humans are smart enough to create a religion (Christianity) that lasted thousands of years. The United States of America is a young civilization when you look at it in a historical perspective. The development of psychology and study of human behavior in the last hundred years compliments the teachings of Jesus. Who knows what the future holds. I don't make the sun raise or the earth spin on its axis. Every day is a blessing, God is gift giver, and energy cannot be destroyed. Peace be with you all. Jesus, I trust you! Amen!

Lovely talk. But not much around the science of compassion. Like all the other talks about compassionate leadership or empathic leadership, it’s very interesting and moving but light on content or evidence. I’m saying this as I see this as an issue for corporations to buy into and embed compassionate leadership as a skills et every person is required to muscle Up on.

So there are some inferences in the beginning of his speech that are off putting. Injecting politics is really just wrong. But I respect him, and prey for his heath. Because one is compassionate for the unborn doesn't mean they are un-compassionate toward women. It just means destroying a beautiful baby before its born doesn't sit well with some people...

Jim turns out to be a hypocrite. His tirade against those who love the unborn is pathetic. I'm a doctor too Jim and I was taught to love and respect all life. What happened to your mnemonic? You feel compelled to judge a faction whom you disagree with, but who love the innocent-does justice only apply to those whom you agree with. I wish i had never bought your book. I am so disappointed in what i heard here

no matter iwhether you are a woman or a doctor or whatever, as a human being this message would be very hard to fault ....but perhaps you have a personal gripe with him ..If by loving the innocent you mean being 'pro-birth' at all costs, then you need to grow up as a woman who is in poverty and has been raped and cannot afford to bring up her baby ... pro-life is very different to pro-birth .. and if you are bringing avchild into a life of suffering, separation from her birth parent, and the shadow of rape , you are talking about imposing a life of misery on an innocent child, you' re not actually talking about 'loving the innocent ' ... only about imposing your moral values on very varying individual situations and saying that any kind of life is better than no life ... and I'm not sure that is very ethical or loving at all. Added to which women who would chose not to have a child for very real reasons, may be forced to go back to doing it the 'backsttreet' way causing even more misery and harm.... EVERY situation should be looked at individually and treated with respect and TRUE compassion ... which means, without judgement,... And as you mentioned yourself, it is not right to judge a certain faction simply becuase you happen to disagree with them....

+Zita Koder Clearly some of us are more evolved than others... We love and care because we are human and have evolved to do so. The same emotions and traits are also found in many other species. Compassion has survival value. At least read some basic science.

+Zita Koder how can you have 'real selflessness' or 'real compassion' emerging from an imaginary creator figure? These qualities emerged because they have survival value to the whole tribe, not just the individual. If you put all of your moral authority in the hands of any despot, whether real or imaginary, you have a recipe for officially sanctioned murder, torture and genocide. This has been demonstrated endlessly by various religious and political ideologies over the past few millennia. It is still being demonstrated right now in the actions of fanatics of all persuasions.
