TEDxToronto is the official TEDx conference for Toronto, Canada.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, it brings together the city's foremost thought leaders, change makers and everyday people from each discipline and challenges them to deliver powerful, unforgettable and unique TEDxTalks.
The theme of the second annual conference was A Call to Action. A total of 300 spots were reserved for audience members, while thousands more across the country joined via satellite locations and live video stream.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

He really opened my eyes to political and social engagement and I plan to bring his model to my high social studies people (students) :)

This speech is more interesting and useful than 99% of what I learn in high school. The school board should just change the curriculum to watching TED talks like these. We might actually learn something useful that way.

I saw Dave Meslin present at the Calgary Teacher's Convention, this is a VERY small part of what he says. He definitely has many examples of what he has done, and ideas for people to get involved in meaningful ways. Dave has many important information to share!

this is such a great message and explanation of why people aren’t just generally uncaring and lazy. hear people saying we can’t do good things because people are just so apathetic all the time. just saw a tiktok about this talk, surprised the actual video has so few views.

While the speaker doesn't provide very detailed solutions to the mentioned problems, he does suggest broad changes in world view that he feels might inspire a more positive outlook. There is a difference then between Mr. Meslin and the general media, in that he does provide corresponding suggestions, even if they are somewhat vague. His general message here is that all citizens of any state should participate more in the political environment and in doing so improve the democratic process.

We also have to be careful whenever labeling external things as control to results, for reasons such as when we dismantle these specific things will not others come up and if others come up then we have to dismantle those except every time a new obstacle appears we will constantly still feel like its never ending, this would also lead to an inclination to keep bothering ourselves and leaving better pursuits to deal with these, but overall good message.

The incredible irony of this talk is that he does exactly what he criticizes the media of doing in point 3. He talks a lot about the problem but then doesn't give anyone any information about what they can actually do about it. Are there organizations working to change the 7 social institutions that he criticizes? If so, who are they? Where are they? How can people watching this get involved with them? What can individual people do to work to dismantle these barriers?

Totally agree with the speaker... but if you look closely...his views contains.. hints of socialism..communism...and also majority of democracy...which is an absolute truth.. You cannot stick to one ideology..

this is all very nice in theory but he forgot to mention one general elemnt which is the "human nature". pepole do prefer to be selfish because when it comes down to them eating or having a shelter they would rather take care of themselves not their neighbor. this is human beings mentality, ask yourself how many truly altruist pepole you know... my guess not many if at all. and pepole r stupid and lazy, by choice you cant undo that you cant make them become something they dont want to become.

...in order to accomplish what you want the human race needs to evolve, we as a specie need to operate on a diffrent level. we [today] r just a comma, a sand grain in the univeral history. the good news are that if you think what you think then maybe in 100,000[or less] years it[we] will come to that, the bad news are that human beings [in this version] might not last 1000 years... but hey look at the bright side, you can buy 50 types of shampoo, all is good... sorry about the mess Dave..

If you think apathy doesn't exist I have a bridge to sell you. Some of the examples he gives are not consistent with everyday life. For example, if you see a car accident and don't stop to help, it's because you've been conditioned not to stop by some mysterious external force? He says the media when addressing politics, only focuses only on celebrities and scandals, he totally avoids a much larger portion of the media being biased to one side or the other. This is the best of TED? I have seen much much better.

Apathy in the form of "I don't care about anything other than myself" doesn't exist in most people, that part I agree with him about. The kind of apathy that most people experience is one of being overwhelmed or sold a doomsday narrative, the kind that says that no matter what they do it's never enough and it's just adding another chef to an already overcrowded kitchen. This is one of the better talks I've seen, and I've binged on a lot.

@@meadowsirl First of all the solution was obviously to actively participate more by 1. Recognizing opportunities to engage with the community 2. Be proactive rather than reactive in looking for and taking opportunities. Anyone who listened to the video and thought about the problems he outline would pretty easily pick up on them. I encourage you to watch the video again and use your (most likely) above-room-temperature IQ to consider what you're listening to and process it rather than listening for an overt one-size-fits-all solution.
