I have more lessons online at www.thehdplayer.com
There's tons of videos, sheet music, and a book on major chords. It's only $47/month and you have access to all the videos so you can consume as much as you are able in that one month.

After a few years I've decided I want the hammered dulcimer. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 played a part in me making this decision. Such a rich instrument

Watching this I am more enamoured to than ever with this wonderful instrument and absolutely convinced I will never be able to play it. Feels like I should have seen two dozen lessons before this “ lesson #1” !

You're just intimidated, but it's not that difficult. Check out Brett Ridgeway's videos. He has some good beginner stuff. Also Dickinson dulcimer. Keep at it, it's worth it 😉

These videos are great and super helpful! I had never played a HD, but got the bug about 2 months ago after watching some videos online. I bought my first one last week with a 2.5 hour trip to Master Works in OK. Love it and I'm hoping that I can keep practicing longer than I keep most of my other commitments. Great work, Ted!

Thank you so much for posting lessons online! It is tough to find an in-person instructor where I live. I've listened to you play for a couple years, and I am always so impressed. So to find you here showing me how to use my hammered dulcimer from the beginning is a gem! I have a great dulcimer, now I can make it come alive with your help. Thank you so much. Julie

Hi Ted, I just finished my second lesson. I am really impressed by how clear and easy to follow your lesson is, yet it is very challenging. I have taken lessons for 2 years and am on my own to find my own voice in my dulcimer. The lesson I just went through really helps me see different possibilities in playing my music. It's a terrific exercise for the brain and using both the left and right hand alternately. Thanks so much and on to lesson 3 after I get this one down. . J.

Any other suggestions that are a slower progression. I can’t add steps in this quickly. Maybe I moved to lesson 2 two soon also where can I find more markers to put on the board?

When I made these, I recorded them live and the video wasn’t working well that day. So lesson two got scrapped. I’m sorry. Maybe I’ll make more this year just to give some lessons away.

Hi!, nice tutorials. What are the main differences between the dulcimer and a Santur?. Thks
@TedYoderMusic
@TedYoderMusic Ай бұрын
Tuning mostly. The santoor has quite a few quarter tones where the hammered dulcimer is based on the western chromatic scale.

How is a hammered dulcimer versus a cimbalom? Are they similar?
@TedYoderMusic
@TedYoderMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Very similar. Probably the easiest way to explain it would be the cimbalom is chromatic pretty much all the way up from the lowest note to the highest. The hammered dulcimer has more of an open tuning, mostly chromatic. You’d probably have to look at tuning charts to really understand the differences.

How is a hammer dulcimer tuned versus a cimbalom?
@TedYoderMusic
@TedYoderMusic 2 жыл бұрын
If you’re meaning how the notes are laid out, you can find tuning charts on google quicker than I could explain it. If you’re asking how are they tuned physically. It’s the same. Tuning pins on the sides of the instrument and you use a tuning wrench similar to a piano but smaller in size.
