Friday Freakout: Parachute Packing Error + Freefly Tube = Messy Malfunction

*WHAT HAPPENED* To celebrate his 400th jump, this skydiver decided to do a bigway freefly tube jump, which was a bit sketchy and turned into a zoo - bodies everywhere with a lot of vertical and horizontal separation. Once he deployed his main canopy, he discovered it wasn't flyable due to a packing error. However, rather than letting go of the freefly tube to follow standard emergency procedures (EP's) for a clean cutaway, he held on to the tube and attempted a one-handed cutaway and reserve deployment. Fortunately he finally let go of the tube just as the reserve was deploying and he landed safely. *WHY DID IT HAPPEN* Packing Error The video is scary because there's a tube involved, but if you watch closely, the tube isn't really involved in the malfunction! This was a straight up packing error! If our translation from French to English was correct (ahem, thanks Google Translate), it sounds like the jumper was anxious about jumping with a tube for the first time and wasn't paying attention while they were packing because they were having conversations about the upcoming tube jump. *HOW COULD IT BE PREVENTED* Focus On One Thing At a Time It sounds like this jumper was nervous about the tube jump and, because they were so worried about what was going to be happening in the air, they made a serious mistake on the ground while packing. It's okay to think about your jump and visualize what you're going to be doing, but you shouldn't be worrying about the jump when there are other critical steps that require your complete attention. When you're packing or when you're doing gear checks? Those are times when your focus needs to totally be on what you're doing in that moment. *ADDITIONAL NOTES* Can We Get An Organizer? So, this jump probably shouldn't have happened in the first place. Some folks may call us boring or risk-averse, but 400 jumps probably isn't enough for a skydiver to be holding onto a tube. Additionally, almost nothing about this jump suggests that there were enough safety-conscious/experienced jumpers involved. There were two tubes, at least ten or eleven jumpers, half of them were at different levels, and a few were halfway across the sky. This was sketchy and someone like an organizer, S&TA, or DZM should have stepped in and made sure this could be attempted safely. Get Rid of It! When getting briefed on the ground, the jumper was told by multiple individuals that, above all else, that they should NOT let go of the tube. Well, that's all well and good when everything is going according to plan, but once things started going awry and they cutaway, they should have let go! There is no reason to keep holding on to a 20-foot piece of fabric that is going to threaten to prevent your reserve canopy from deploying as cleanly as possible. Thankfully, this jumper realized that half a second before they pulled their reserve.

I did the solo jump course and decided to not solo jump. It was so grim and instilled more fear than confidence. I was just like NOPE, I think anything that can fail will fail and I'm going to panic mid-air with all my adrenaline.

The description is incorrect. at 1:25 you clearly see the person holding onto the tube, after the reserve handle was pulled. So they realized a half-second after, not before. I get that in real time this happened super fast. But really, not dropping the tube before chopping (let alone pulling silver)... That's just... mind-blowing. D:

The whole jump was a cluster. No organization, ZERO safety from literally any of the jumpers. The fact that no one was killed will embolden them to do it again. Then throw in the packing error that the jumper compounded by not letting go of a $20 piece of fabric, and it should have been suicide by stupidity. These vids usually feature some anomaly or the occasional dumb move... but this one had it all. SHEESH!

You’re right about everything except the price of a freefly tube. Those things come in around $400-$700 from what I’ve seen online. That being said, the cost of a main, risers and free bag all come in much higher than that and we’re all prepared to let those go.

@@canatolakhoemini6728 That looked worse than a step through. Brake lies stay on the correct side. This thing seemed to have a brake line cutting across to the wrong side and wrapped around something. * Looking at it again, it looks like he stowed the toggles in opposite keepers? Probably should have just unstowed the brakes. They probably would have sorted themselves out.

@@slartybarfastb3648 regardless, the tube's not worth it, let it go and focus on the life endangering situation. In my opinion anyhow. I didn't see the point of having your left hand unavailable to help save your life for a replaceable tube. I'm not against opening with a tube , I've done it, but the second I realized I have a canopy I can't land, it wouldn't even had to register to let go of that thing! If I remember correctly he chopped and still was holding on to it! That was frightening! Either way, it worked out and thankfully, no one was hurt.

the sad reality is that most skydivers have not too many brain cells. Once they pass a threshold they don't care about anything anymore. nothing can happen to them. Fortunately this sport is extremly safe and forgiving even for those with 1 neuron left

Well...they're all landable if you look at it that way. It's just whether or not you want to be able to walk away from the landing that matters... Example: I knew a guy who landed a line-over...he's still dead.
