I'm going to star and finish my comment by saying that: I'm a skydiver and this is just my opinion on a social media, if you're a student or a new skydiver it's fine to watch videos and read comments but YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR ABOUT ANY DOUBT THAT YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT EITHER YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OR VIDEOS/COMMENTS ON A SOCIAL MEDIA. Despite the fact that he performed as he was supposed to, such as not cuttingaway, making gentle turns or not turning at all and not doing the flair before touching the ground, I think this is a good example of how automatic behavior could lead to problems, bad emergency resolutions or potential danger, I would not put the slider behind my neck in that situation, it might be a problem if the configuration turns into a downplane and you have to cutaway.. note that there's no need to put the slider down since he's not going to do a regular flight, he's actually dealing with an emergency situation all the way to the ground, that's why I think that was an automatic action, it was something that he is obviously USED TO DO during regular jumps but there's no need to do it in this particular case and it also generates a potential danger. So every time you jump have fun but also remember to be very focused at all times and try to avoid that "automatic pilot mode" because it decreases you awareness. Again, I'm a skydiver and this is just my opinion on a social media, if you're a student or a new skydiver it's fine to watch videos and read comments but YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR ABOUT ANY DOUBT THAT YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT EITHER YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OR VIDEOS/COMMENTS ON A SOCIAL MEDIA. And I encourage all skydivers to do the same when you guys comment, it might sound a little obvious for most of you but this days everyone comments the first thing that comes to their minds on social media and that's not the way we should behave in the skydiving field, actually we sould try to spread this "RESPONSIBLE COMMENTING" by adding that sentence at the end of your comments and hopefully contributing to make our sport even safer. Blue skies.

Perhaps you shouldn't stow that slider behind your head in case you do have to chop for a down plane

During my AFF I was taught to keep both and fly them in biplane, however I would like to know if it's hard to turn right/left so that you can land in the dropzone area. Since you're only able to drive the main canopy, won't it destabilize after you turn right/left?
@scottanthony45114 жыл бұрын
I had a two out almost exactly like this. RSL snagged the MLW during normal pull. Could not steer at all, every time I tried to mess with the rear risers, the canopies would start to separate. I just left my hands off the risers, brakes stowed, and was in a gentle left hand turn all the way to the ground. Fairly stiff winds, landed backwards in a soybean field. Had I not had a huge soybean field to land, I would have let them separate, and cutaway the main.

i know its a kind of a heat of the moment thing, but should he have left his brakes stowed and flown the risers?

Release the RSL, release brakes on the front canopy only, fly gently, no flare, land with PLF (spouting this out for myself. Ha, ha). Sharp eyelet acting like some half-assed, impromptu AAD, huh?
@tedburgess8393 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'm a newly licensed skydiver and we are taught to keep the brakes stowed. Only turn if absolutely necessary such as landing by powerlines and if you must turn to use the rear risers on the main canopy and to only make light turns. And of course plf on landing.

Why couldn't they separate after the situation stabilized?
@cjs1420026 жыл бұрын
so you dont risk the main getting tangled in the reserve after you cut. Two canopies are better than none.

Richard Oshea paraglider pilot, i don't mean to cut of from the main chute, just try go separate ways somehow. I am naive to skydiving.

Michigan Mister whichever canopy is in front, most times is main but not all the time. This is only for biplane/over-under, side by side you use your outside risers only, downplane you cutaway your main. If you have any further questions, i suggest you talk to a qualified person directly and not social media. Lots of people have never jumped or are going off of old EPs, take all social media advice with a grain of salt.

i understand, lawndart, sound advice. thanks for YOUR perspective.

Michigan Mister its like i was told at a coach course this weekend. You can ask 20 different 'equally qualified' individuals, and get 23 different answers. Big thing is, think before you just cutaway. Side x side, and biplane you could cause a bigger problem by releasing your main and it wrapping in your reserve. Downplane is always cut it away, no matter who you ask.
