I grew up “hearing”tool but when this song came out I liked it so much that I “listened” to tool and they became my favorite band. I don’t know why I didn’t notice them before but I’m so glad I started listening to all their songs. IMO best band ever and it’s not even close.

no other band in the world encourages/rewards ACTIVE listening more than TOOL. "pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen". from rosetta stoned: "you better listen". plus all the whispering, polyrythms, instrumentation, and dynamics. they write the music first, THEN maynard comes in at the tail in to put his decal stickers of dazzling vocals to the music, as interpreted by the music itself. but the REAL STUFF, is in the music. the words? get in the way. the words? lead you back to the music. this is what the band TOOL tells us. over and over. infact, they don't endorse many products that they don't themselves (or friends) put out to market ...but when they do, it's for a pair of kicking closed-cupped headphones. -_- they are such audiophiles of their own artistic output that they insist on recording everything as close to pure analog as possible. and they'll never submit to streaming music sites. sry, not sry, buy the cd. or better yet, buy the cd (for intended artistic packaging design - also legendary in the industry, always worth it, so do it) but go for the vinyl as well. analog. all the way. pure sound, as intended. they will reward you. they know how to. binaural/shamanic beats, it's biology. their record label is called "dissectional" for a reason. a tool by which to cut us all open, so as to heal, bc we broken af. let 'em take "you" (44&2 disharmonic consciousness) under.

What drew me into Tool was 46&2 when he's talking about Jungian theory. It's when I realized Maynard was a very intellectual person and made me want to listen to more of his music. No Maynard did not intoduce me to Carl Jung I had already been studying Jung before.

Gotta say it warms my heart to see young people getting into Tool. I've been listening since I was 13 and I'm a few months shy of 40. Most of my own peers around me generally aren't familiar (let alone fans) with the band, but when I meet someone who is, it's like making a secret connection.

This song isnt just about news media, although that is one prime example of a larger group of or need for tradegy in general. Every human is included in what he talks about even if one thinks they are not. I'll give some evidence... Has a book, movie, play, etc., ever been written where no conflict occurs? ever? What if there was a book that simply was all mundane daily stuff of a person and absolutely nothing interesting happened? Readers would be confused, bored, and not even understand why something was written without a fundamental plot. Even if it's not "death" he is, in the larger picture talking about "tradegy". Even in a TV sitcom something will cause suffering due to a comical misunderstanding or odd funny occurence that disrupts their life in a negative way (even if its minor and temporary). We are drawn to conflict, (i.e. plot). Weather is mass death on the news or we enjoy reading Harry Potter, we need to view conflict, its a fundamental part of humans.

Please check out some of Johnkews drum covers of Tool. This is someone who has mad respect for Danny as a drummer... though John still does a phenomenal job covering Danny's drum tracks. He mixes his covers extremely well with the master of each song but I tell you what... to see up close the raw talent that has come from Tool, especially Danny's drumming... it's a sight to see. Yes, I know it isn't Danny... but it's still worth checking out. Of course my favorite is Vicarious, but he does several others. Maybe consider Right in Two (kzbin.info/www/bejne/enSQqZKsrb55p8k) or any of his other ones you might be more interested in.
@CampSiteVlogs5 жыл бұрын
I have seen all of JohnKews Drum Covers. Im a drummer myself. The only criticism I have of his videos are his camera angles. He tries to switch them up a lot and be fancy when all you really need is just a camera over his right and left shoulder. You don't miss a motion with those angles. But yeah John is still a talented drummer. No doubt.

I think this is Maynards response to people judging him for being a bad influence. His frustration over being judged for expressing his dark side honestly by people who don't even realize they are just as bad, they just get their fix from a government approved clean and holesome source. This is the NEWS! It's importaint information, not entertainment. Yeah right.

I think an interesting interpretation of this song is that Maynard is narrating from the point of view of God. "Hands to the sky crying "why oh why?"" Then God answers why. "Cause I need to watch things die, from a distance. Vicariously I live while the whole world dies." Not likeley Maynard's intent but very interesting none the less.
