Vamsee Juluri, Professor of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco, draws important lessons from Jonathan Haidt’s recent book, ‘The Anxious Generation,’ in which the author warns us of the direct negative impact of smartphone use by teenagers on the mental health of American teens. Vamsee Juluri explains how India is likely to follow a similar trajectory unless we go back to the basics and put into practice the deep wisdom of our ancestors.

Amazing...Why can't we pressurize the tech companies to dish out age appropriate content with a push from governments across the globe? Why can't we arrive at a standard norm for any app? It's indeed an anxious generation and we as parents too end up taking a big chunk of that anxiety on us impacting of our well-being too!

How would you do that when you can't agree on what is age appropriate? When every taboo is seen as another milepost to be broken?

I’m in agreement with most of what you say here. In my view, it’s unfortunate, though, that you used a reasonably principled stance of many young people-their stance against Israel’s brutal “defense” against the Palestinian people-as an example of their phone-driven mental health issues. Yes, young people definitely have these issues. So do most previous generations of Westerners. I’m three times the age of the oldest teenager today and didn’t grow up with cell phones. I mostly read books-and mostly on eastern spirituality. By my late teens, I was living in a yoga ashram. So I am quite different from today’s youth. But I still have mental health issues because they are rampant in our way of life. It’s not just from phones, although phones do make it even worse. But my main point is that mental health issues do not explain everything about us. Young people-and older people like me-with mental health issues can still make reasonable judgments about, and can oppose what we see as, immoral behavior-even if other reasonable people disagree with our judgments. Many of us also oppose what Nazis did to Jews and what the British did to India. Would you say that this is also only because of our mental health issues? I doubt it. Yes, the way the Palestinians conducted their Oct 6 attack was horribly wrong, but it is a sad fact of human nature that we sometimes lash out at innocent people when we are forced into a hopeless and horrendous situation with no way out. The Israelis created such a situation by turning Gaza into a prison-like environment. And it is a reasonable judgement to say that the Israeli response of killing so many civilians is worse than the Oct 6 attack. You obviously have a different opinion, but both opinions can be held by well-meaning, morally inclined people-which I have no doubt that you are. So all I am saying is that I would not use this particular example to illustrate the mental health issues of young people. It seriously undermines your overall argument, which is a good and important one.

Upword just cherry picked the wrong side of America Who won most medals at Olympics? Who is the top exporter of technology? Where do Indians always dreams to settle? Who has the greatest cultural influence all over the world? America influences India but India doesn't even have any influence on it's neighbouring countries even Nepalese feel closer to China than India At 0:30 only one point of view is showed, if you surf social media, an Anti-Dalit post is far more easier to find than an Anti-Brahman one

1. That's bcoz US allows its athletes to cheat by allowing to take banned performance enhancing drugs. This is accepted even by WADA. 2. This is due to Capitalism and Brain Drain from countries like India. 3. This is due to the cancer called Socialism which has plagued India since its independence. 4. What "greatest"?? As in the most hegemonic. Look its all vague. Bcoz much of it is European and not American. Secondly India too has great influence over entire SE and East Asia. Third let the US empire collapse(doesn't appear that it will anytime soon in near future) and all this "greatest" influence will vanish in an twinkling of an eye. Soft power is nothing without hard power. 5. Who told u?? Hippie movement, yoga culture all these influence is of course alien influence to u it seems. India doesn't have much control over its neighbours is a problem created by the nehruvian state. After 1971 the nehruvian state's financial condition so horrible that it had to shut down RAW operations in BD. Result is widespread Anti India sentiment in BD now. Similarly it directly conspired to put a anti Hindu anti India communist regime in Nepal in favour of the Hindu monarchy. Is there anything more needed to prove that we have been ruler by traitors since 1947 barring a few years of Atalji until 2014?? Anyways Bhutan is completely under Indian control. Maldives too is in too much need of Indian money that to afford anti India stance. Recent statements by Muizzu confirm it. So no issue there. No need to speak of Pak or BD. Afghanistan is pro India so much so that ex CiA agent even claimed(which is likely true) that RAW gives money to Mullah Yakub of Taliban to carry out assassinations in Pakistan against anti India elements. Sri Lanka's case is unclear. US and India might collaborate to do a regime a change there given Pro China guy is in power right now. 6. That's your personal fantasy. Show me any empirical evidence that it is the case. Infact contrary seems to be the case given how anti Hindu the academia and media is in India.

But this video wasn't concerned about all that, was it? That wasn't the topic of discussion. They acknowledged that America has the greatest cultural influence over the contemporary world as it was relavent and in line with the topic. Also, anti-brahmanism is more prevalent, especially amongst the left than anti-dalit sentiment.
