Queue every Pixar movie ever. From Finding Nemo to Cars to WALL-E there's a basic understanding that can be grasped by people of all ages but there are constantly references that only certain people will get. It's one of the things that keeps me coming back bc each time I watch it I find new jokes I never understood 5+ years ago. The writers that work at Pixar know how to craft a script that the whole family can enjoy for many years. (Lion King 1 1/2 was also this way but not a lot of people know it even exists. :c )

Starfeather136 Not to mention that it added dimensions to Percy’s understanding of his and others’ experiences as Demigods. When Percy got there, the only cabins there were dedicated to the big twelve gods in the Greek Pantheon, with all the minor gods kind of shoved into the Hermes cabin because he’s the patron god of lost travelers. While he appreciated the camaraderie that being in such close vicinity to a bunch of misfits could provide, (something he thoroughly missed when he got stuck in the lonely and cold Poseidon cabin) he knew how demeaning it was to be considered as lesser and shoved in a corner. So after the events of the fifth book, Percy helped renovate the camp to make sure it accommodates as many Greek gods as possible.

It's really weird considering that by today's values, Hades probably the nicest of the Greek gods. I mean, yes, he did kidnap Persephone and force her to marry him, but compared to what his brothers, sister, nephews, and nieces have done, that's a pretty light crime. Considering there's no myth to my knowledge mentioning him having any offspring, it's likely that he didn't force himself onto her at any point either. It's like he just wedded her because his brothers kept bullying him for being single.

Why don't we talk about how butchered up my favorite character ever, Annabeth Chase. They movies took my tough, smart, prideful, badass, but at the same time vulnerable and deep character into a lame, flirty, unemotional, dumb BRUNETTE. They can't even get her hair right. One thing is that annabeth constanly is underestimated because of her blond hair. And with that capture the flag scene, if Annabeth and Percy were to have sparred, Percy would have had his ass whooped. Touching water does not equal instant sword fighting powers. The movies also portray Annabeth as a flirty, lovesick person. Annabeth just plain out hated him at the beginning, so she definitely "had strong feelings for you" but they couldn't be more negative. Not including the zoo truck scene was honestly one of many, many the movies greatest mistakes. That's where we see Annabeth open up about her past and then they finally chose to become friends. Also, we don't see her wisdom, wits, and cleverness. Annabeth proves even in the first book that she is the smartest girl percy has ever met. Her knowledge saves Grover and percy time and time again. We also didn't see her pride. Annabeth is a person who has goals. The reason that they go to medusa's lair is for food, and they stay because of annabeth pride since medusa flatters her enough to get a "photo" when she then shows her true colors. I'm sorry for this unorganized rant comment, but I hate the repsrentation of one to the strongest characters in the entire two book series. I would like to say something else though. THE MUSICAL IS FLIPPING GREAT!!! All the character's stories and personalities are accurately shown. If you want to find out who annabeth actually is, listen to my grand plan.

Exactly, the books are really popular and the whole idea is great for a movie. Honestly I can see all ages coming to this movie if the movie was actually made according to the books. Not to mention with the amount of books/follow-up series the fans would get many movies and the filmmakers could get a lot of money (which seems to be their goal) So if they had just followed the books this could have indeed been the next harry potter...

There's a slight chance that I missed it, but I believe you forgot to mention the biggest thing that was left out for me. The entire sequence between Percy vaporizing his teacher and them going to camp half-blood was cut completely in the movie. Percy thinking it was all in his head, the conflict with his stepfather, the really great character building between him and his mother, the dramatic moment of Grover bursting in during a rainstorm. Plus, the significance of the color blue was ignored as well as probably the darkest moment in the book where it was strongly implied that percy's mother was getting beaten by his stepfather, the big motivation for Percy letting his mother kill his stepfather.

I was 13 when I read Percy Jackson. 13 year old me was a huge mythology fan, yet never did I see any fictional media getting it right. 13 year old me was really upset. The most common mistake was when movies and shows and stuff always kept on calling Heracles Hercules, it’s a small thing but in a Greek setting they kept on calling Heracles for his roman name. Percy Jackson was the first piece of media that did not do this that I ever came across. And it’s such a small thing, but for me that was a tiny proof off how much Rick Riordan cared about actually educating in Greek mythology while at the same time doing a modern and interesting incarnation off the famous characters. One off the first lines in the movies is using the name Hercules. It’s such a small thing, but it just proves they don’t care.

One notable change that did irritate me was the dilemma involving only three pearls are four people (Percy, his mother, Annabeth and Grover). In the book, it was a very big deal because Percy ends up deciding to leave her mother in the Underworld, proving to be a hero who lets go of his personal desires in order to save the world. In the movie it's just glossed over with Grover staying just for that awkward sex innuendo joke.

What i loved so much about Riordan's books were how he cleverly avoided exposition, for example by: - Raising questions like (I'm not sure if this is actually a thing in the books, just needed an example) "Wouldn't Luke/Kronos only be able to do/know that if they were aware of the prophecy?" But never explicitly saying they don't know the prophecy, leaving the assumption that they did as your only logical conclusion - When a character had a plan, Rick would often write something like "Percy told them the plan" without actually telling us. This way the characters know, but it's still a secret for us and that always made me exited to keep reeding

I posted this as a reply to another comment, but wanted to share how ridiculous the plot of the movie is: Book: A war between Zeus and Poseidon would cause the Trojan War to look like a water balloon fight. This is being set up by the King of the Titans, Kronos, who is so evil he ate his own children. He’s setting the gods against each other so they tear Olympus apart by themselves so Kronos can just take over after the gods. destroyed themselves. He can even manipulate gods and demigods into doing his bidding, despite being trapped in Tartarus. He is an incredibly dangerous villain who will doom us all if he ever regains a personal form. Movie: Luke has daddy issues, so he’s decided to personally cause the end of world. Because he didn’t get enough hugs as a child, he decided to kill off the entire human race. Oopsies! Maybe we should do something about that, but why don’t we just let the demigods deal with it. I’m sure it will be fine!

@@WolfRider2002 I know, but that wasn’t the only reason he resented the gods and joined Kronos’ side. He also blamed the gods for Thalia’s death, which is one of the main reasons he hated the gods. Not only does he fight the Chimera there, but falling into the Mississippi River is where he learns a lot of his powers, including talking to under sea life, staying dry despite being surrounded by water, and the fact he has a limitless amount of oxygen under the water. What does the film give us instead of this important scene? An opening joke where he is shown holding his breath under water. This doesn't work, but they use the confusion to get away. The only other time it's made a plot point is with Luke's sword Backbiter, which is both steel and bronze so it can hurt both mortals and monsters (sidenote: the first time Percy sees it he recognizes it as normal steel because it cuts through straw dummies, implying celestial bronze also can't damage the environment. Which is stupid and I'm pretty sure contradicted by every book including this one). After that it's kinda never brought up again, maybe because Rick recognized it's kinda a stupid idea in general.

If you take a closer look at the film and have read all the books, you notice that some of the stuff they put in this movie they actually took from later novels... and completely botched up. 1. Persephone actually does appear in the Underworld during summer in the books, but that doesn't happen until the final novel, The Last Olympian. And that was because Hades had brought her there(and her mother Demeter) to keep them out of the war with the Titans as he believed that it wasn't his fight. 2. Percy does sneak out of camp to go on a quest in the books, but this takes place in The Titan's Curse under a set of completely different circumstances. 3. Campers actually can play video games in camp, as shown in The Lost Hero when Beckendorf's bed is described as having a new gaming system. 4. There are demigod/greek creatures relationships. The musical added a bit where Beckendorf also had a relationship with a nymph, and the books introduced Lavinia Asimov, a Roman demigod in a relationship with a dryad, in the Trials of Apollo series. But yeah, I think a series like this would work way better as a television series, maybe even as an animated tv series. Update: Gods, pleaaaase let the Disney+ series be good...

I find it weird that among the few that didn't portray Hades as a villain was Hercules & Xena. While he didn't appear much, he was actually usually on the heroes' side. There were just certain rules about death he had to follow (e.g. a warrior who had a last minute redemption in a previous episode still ended up in Tartarus due to years of killing).

actualy the Underworld is divided in three: Elysium, which is the rewarding place for the exceedingly good souls, Asphodeus which was the equivalent of Limbo, and the fields of Punishment. Hades's judges such as Minos could also grant you reincarnation. The "LSD Flower Cakes" are in my opinion a nice addition. The Lotus Casino was meant to be a reference to the island of the Lotus-Eaters in the Oddessy, in which Odysseus and his crew happen across an island full of people who eat the fictional lotus fruit, which makes them want to stay there for their life and eat the fruit more. Odysseus ends up losing two of his crew members and personally goes to find them and rescue them, finding them having eaten the lotus fruit. Yeah, their age affected the book quite a bit. First off, being 12/13 they were mostly just getting out of the boys/girls are icky stage. Annabeth and Percy couldn't stand each other and were slowly getting along and becoming friends. FRIENDS. Now I didn't read the whole series yet, I'm near the end of the third book, but even then there are small hints that MAYBE they'll be more than friends (IDK maybe they do get together in the end, don't spoil it for me), but HERE they're already checking each other out, staring into each other's eyes and all that teen angst 'wanna jump in each others pants' crap. Their age also lead to them having to catch buses, hitch rides, hike, find maps etc cause they weren't old enough to drive. The movie glosses over that by having them drive everywhere. The Lotus casino was also full of arcades and kids games, again, to impress them so much they'd never want to leave. It didn't have the typical gambling and dancing showgirls cuz they weren't old enough to care. They also left out that the pen/sword was called RIPTIDE!!!! Friggin Riptide!!! How can you leave out the name of the main character's weapon???? That's like making a movie about Goku and having him fire off a beam of light and noone ever calling it the KameHame Ha throughout the whole thing. I also have doubts in how much faith the producers had into making this into a franchise. If you watch the movie by itself ignoring that it's based on the first of a SERIES of books.... you'd figure it was a one in done. It ends so perfectly and Percy can just ride off into the sunset with Annabeth. NO. In the book the heroes part ways, Luke announces his betrayal and escapes promising to return.... And Kronos is still out there. He's the series' 'final boss' that they only had a glimpse of. Percy is basically left knowing that someday, eventually he will have to face Kronos, and there's also a prophecy that hints that whenever Percy turns 18 he will either help save or destroy the world. So no it does NOT end all wrapped up in a little bow. It leaves the reader knowing that there is more to come and this is just the beginning. While the movie ends kinda like.... well, it didn't really NEED a sequel, it can just end here.

You could tell though that the second film had to have been the final one. Had to have been. They completely botched the final villain and pretty much every part of the prophecy that there is no way they could actually do anything with it, despite what stingers they have at the end. And even if they do think they can try, I don't want them to because I don't want them to go near my favourite characters of the di'anglios

You know the thing that pisses me off the most about this movie is the stuff about Hades but not just the Satan stuff but the way he's characterized and his relationship with Persephone. In the book Hades is shown to the be arguably the most levelheaded and calm of the Big Three as he actually stuck to the arrangement of not having any more children and got royally pissed off at Zeus when said guy tried to straight up murder his children. He was a busy and gloomy kind of guy but you could clearly tell he took his job seriously and cared about his children. More importantly and I can't stress this enough Persephone LIKED BEING MARRIED TO HADES! Seriously in the book Persephone's love for Hades was 100% genuine, yes she didn't like it when she was kidnapped originally but after Hades failed to bribe her they spent time talking and fell in love naturally. Heck she actually looked forward to her time with Hades because it got her away from her overbearing mother Demeter. Heck she even didn't have a problem with him occasionally seeking comfort from other women, because she knew he was lonely when she had to leave. Sure she wasn't fond of the children her might father, but she was still extremely reasonable about it. Here she's a whinny premadonna who sleeps with freaking Grove. F THIS MOVIE!

Katelyn Taylor I'm pretty sure that The Dom was incorrect when he said there were no anti-intervention laws. The gods were allowed to VISIT their kids every so often, and could even give them presents every once and a while (Annabeth's Cap, Luke's Flying Shoes, and to some extent Percy's Riptide, though for that one it was indirectly and several years beforehand), but they weren't aloud to help their own kids with much else; no directly aiding you own offspring, which was more to prevent favouritism than to prevent gods from meddling with mortals. That, and the fact that they are gods, and thus BUSY with their duties as such, is the primary reason for all of that - other than the gods just being jerks, of course.

I was really angry when they reduced Hades to a wife abusing, power-hungry dick. In Greek mythology, he was actually seen as a fair god. The common people didn't really worship him in the same way as the other gods (fearful of death they were) but they did respect him. He was seen as rather noble. Even his stealing of Persephone shouldn't be looked at through the lens of the modern age. Women were given to marriage by their fathers. Zeus gave such permission to Hades but Demeter didn't agree. He took her anyway, he had her father's permission. Demeter freaked out and eventually got her way for half the year. Whether Persephone wanted to go or not is unclear, so painting him as an abuser can be stylistic but seems disingenuous to the mythology. In the Percy Jackson books, Hades was fair again; he returned Percy's mother when it became clear Percy was not the lightning thief. He then goes on to be rather nice and fair in the subsequent books. I like Hades, a lot. He's one of my favorite gods in many and various incarnations and artist interpretations. I even liked the Disney version despite it being inaccurate. (It was him who helped lock up the Titans with Zeus, he'd be the first they'd kill if they got out.) That said I hate this portrayal. I don't like to think Persephone is forever some damsel in distress, or worse abused. Hecate and her are tight, but Hecate is friends with her mother. Do you think a badass Goddess like Hecate (a literal titan and goddess of magic, a psychopomp who has the ability to travel to the underworld and back at will) would let Persephone stay there and be abused? Hercules the Legendary Journeys portray Persephone as rather autonomous, she chose to secretly eat the Pomegranate seeds because she wanted to stay (they were in love before she was "abducted".) She also wanted her mother happy so she agreed to the 50/50 split. This portrayal is lovely and shows her in a better light. It's also fair to note this mythos is viewed as a "love story." There are cult holidays celebrating Persephone's marriage. Persephone even turns a jealous "rival" for Hade's affection into a mint plant. I'm assuming that means she wants Hade's attention at least at the time of that occurring which is shortly after agreeing to stay. Demeter has always come across as the crazy one in the mythos to me, she didn't want her daughter to grow up and leave her, she was overly controlling, refused to let her marry, then when she was "abducted" went on strike and killed mortals because she wouldn't do her job and the land went barren and threatened to kill them all until she got her daughter back. ( I even found a side story where she built a safe haven to hide in while she cast a drought on the whole world. Premediated murder of thousands.) Hades also wasn't a monster. He let Persephone rule beside him as an equal, he created Elysium for her when she wished for a nicer place for the mortals to go in the Underworld. When a god gives you a literal heaven as a wedding gift that's kinda special.

Though not a major flaw i feel like this was an unneeded change that missed the point of the world. The reason the LSD cakes are not in the book is because though the Lotus casino is the same people it like most other greek establishments and beings has modernised itself so it replaced the LSD being the lure to the wonder of the casino. The film having the cakes missed the point of the casino wonder rendering it fairly unnecessary to the story as surely any site would do in the film if the lore was the drugs. Just feels like the film makers thinking ah we can do a better reference to mythology than the writer can and completely missing the writers vision and reference.

Also, click pens are much more common and the clicking probably looked more cinematic, so they also just adapted it to the audience and format. Then the makers of this movie flipped through the book, took some names and a few events and then tore up the book and said let's make a movie. I feel like my innocent childhood got massacred. Thank you Mr. The Dom for reviewing this. To me you are on par with the Nostalgia Critic and Angry Video Game Nerd.

A small nitpick, but the lotus eating is actually a thing in Greek myth. TL;DR version: An island is infested with lotus flowers, and the people who live on said island eat them as their primary source of food, and the lotuses are basically super-powerful narcotics that get you super high. They're referenced in The Odyssey, and Herodotus talks about them. It's still not in the book, but it's not a totally random thing the film crew threw in, although it doesn't have a place in the story.

true, but in the book the idea is that the casino is the lotus, it draws you in and keeps you for as long as possible, even warping your perception of time. actually true of real casinos. in the movie they totally miss that fact and decide that they need drugs to stay at a casino.

OKAY so i just realized a thing from rewatching this video (amazing video, btw, it sums up everything i loathe about this movie, even if it was what got me into the books 7 years ago). so the point you make about the movie saying that the gods are physically not allowed to go see/talk to their half blood children, no matter how much they want to, is *bullshit* in context to the rest of the series. It not only messes with the theme of absent parents and how kids may be affected by those absences, but it completely ruins the point of what Luke is fighting for! Now, i know that Luke is an antagonist. He is doing bad things, he hurts his old childhood friends and manipulates many halfbloods (namely Ethan Nakamura, who you apparently see in the second movie for no good reason) into taking his side. However, like any good villain, he believes he is right, and has a good reason to be like he is. He was one of the many heroes that are used by their godly parents to do menial tasks. Hermes gets him to do a thing, and he almost gets killed for it. After a lifetime where the only actual interaction he had with his father was a dangerous one, he decided that gods need more accountability in their actions with the kids. *that's* what Luke is fighting for, and the idea of it is ruined if Hermes can just say "oh, Luke, i meant well, but there was this rule that says that I can't interact with you." It's also what makes the ending of the series, when they manage to give the minor gods cabins as well as forcing them to claim their kids ASAP rather than never is so much more satisfying. Luke was correct, and the books recognize that. the movies, and that tiny detail, change that entire dynamic, making the struggle between Luke and the gods to be more black and white than it really is.
@HumbleCrow27
@HumbleCrow27 5 жыл бұрын
Good point but I think you are ignoring a large part of why Hermes treats Luke the way he does. He knew his eventually fate and that coupled with what happened to his mother destroyed what ever relationship there could have been between the two. The menial task was supposed to a great honor as he would be following in the footsteps of Heracles, perhaps the most famous of Greek heroes . Luke anger was because he never had a childhood and he felt that his father abandoned him. Side point, hurt I think you meant killed. A lot of half-bloods die before Luke is finally stopped.

8:10 the lotus flower were a nod to the story of King Odysseus's travels in The Odyssey. Odysseus and his men wer stranded on an island where they encounter the lotus-eaters. Hell may be thought of as a place filled with pain and torture, but you generally only end up there for being a truly nasty human being. It seemed to me that spirits in asphodel no longer have their human minds so it's basically like oblivion. According to christianity people can get sent to hell for not evil things **cough, suicide, cough, being gay, cough** While the gods disapproved of suicide, someone has to be really, really, REALLY evil or stupid to go to the fields of punishment. Listen, if somebody commits suicide it's because they want to not exist anymore. Depression is so bad that oblivion sounds better than any kind of existing. That is the worst feeling in the universe, and it does not deserve punishment. Also, for someone to go to elysium (I dunno how to spell it), they have to be really great. Basically that's Hades' way of raising the bar to improve humanity. I would love to have a rational debate about this if anyone is up for it.

The thing I hate most is another Chistianization of Greek Myth. RR had Hades as an additional victim of Luke’s plans, not another baddie. That was what made the ending so interesting! Everyone was pointing fingers at him because he went after Percy, thinking he was the mastermind. Then they find out he had been robbed as well, thus turning his attacks from “oh what a bad guy” to “oh he legit just wants his stuff too. Well crap.” The movie just has him being the Devil with a new name when he was far from it. Hades is fair in all things and was only retaliating on a slight he had thought Percy caused him. On top of that, IT IS FREAKING SUMMER! WHY IS PERSEPHONE IN HAIDES?!

Also, Hades' loves his wife to bits and is extremely faithful to her and protective. In mythology, when Theseus and his buddy Pirithious (I think that's his name, check OSP's video) tried to kidnap Persephone so Pirithous could marry her, Hades had stone snakes bind them to their chairs and left them there. Heracles later rescued Theseus but left the other guy there since he was the one who wanted to kidnap the Queen of the Underworld and Hades wasn't letting him go. There is no evidence of him being abusive to anyone, least of all his beloved wife and Queen. He even allowed Orpheus to take his beloved Eurydice out of the underworld but Orpheus failed to follow his instructions.

TDF9055 I was kind of the other way, I really hated The Lightning Thief film because it was just trying to be Harry Potter and it ruined Percy Jackssons chance of every becoming a successful franchise by ignoring all the things were good. Sea of Monsters wasn't a good film, but I feel like its worst elements were caused by The Lightning Thief's mistakes. It had to try and be a sequel to a film which didn't set up _any_ of the elements that were supposed to be plot points in the sequel. More than that, I really suspect with the way Lightning Thief failed, the writers weren't sure if Sea of Monsters would get a sequel or not, so they wrote it with two endings, one that ended the series completely with Kronos dead, and another if the studio decided to greenlight a sequel. I think that's why the ending of Sea of Monsters is so messed up
