Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MEGA CHARACTER TIER LIST!

2012 Leo is definitely the best Leonardo for me. We see 1987 Leo, 2003 Leo and the movie variants of Leo struggle with being a good leader, they have already become who they were meant to be. But 2012, Rise and I hope what Mutant Mayhem is trying to do with Leo is that they've shown us a Leonardo still learning what it means to be a Leader, still trying to become that Leader In Blue. 2012 did it perfectly, we watched Leo grow up and become more responsible, believe in himself more, him being a fan of Space heroes and his favourite character being the captain also added to his want to become a leader. He wanted to be a Leader just like the Captain in his series but he never expected the amount of pressure and responsibility that would come with it and it got to him at some points, the fear of failure and letting his family and friends down. But it was around Season 3 and 4 when he really peaked, with Splinter gone, he had to grow up and take care of his family. And he was the one destined to defeat the Shredder. Around Season 1, none of the Turtles really respected Leo as their Leader, not even April! But in Season 3 to 5, Leo has gained their respect and learned what it meant to be a Leader. The episode where he gives up being a Leader and gives the role of Leader to Raph is also very interesting. I love how much love the 2012 series gave 2012 Leo and how well written he was. I like how 2012 Leo isn't just a boring version of Leo, he can also be charming, goofy and funny since he is still a teenager and a big geek. He's definitely the best for me. I'd say Rise Leo did a fine job too but it was too abrupt, like out of nowhere, he became Leader! I know it's Nickelodeon's fault and not the writers of the show and movie but regardless, he was amazing in the movie. And Mutant Mayhem Leo is the funniest Leo we have so far and I really like him, hope Seth Rogen knows what he's doing with him. Anyways yeah, I'm not sure if I explained it properly why I love 2012 Leo so much but he's such an amazing character.

2012 Leo is great - fantastic character - but best Leo goes to 2003 for me. Not only does he go through many of the same arcs as 2012 Leo, but we get this great arc in season 4 where he actually has a complete breakdown and quits as leader. The emotion is done so well, and his VA just nails it as he deals with depression, anger, apathy. His story is so consistent and persistent, like how during a major fight with Shredder where he "fails" his shell is actually shattered and a large segment broken off, and they draw him that way for the rest of the series. A consistent reminder that he's scarred. Eventually Leo gets the help he needs and it actually ends up elevating his maturity and his training to a whole new tier. By the end of the series, he's not just one of the ninja turtles, he's a full ninja master, on the level even of splinter. I mentioned in a similar conversation some time ago that by the end of the 2012 series we see Leo grow up, but by the end of the 2003 series we see Leo grow wise. Both are great takes on the character, and very well written, but I give it to 2003 personally, even if it's pretty close.

I literally love this list the only thing I would change is Donnie from 2012 because outside of the love triangle he is an excellent character, funny, intelligent, etc. Other than that I loved excellent work 😁

7:20 I like how you mention this cause tales of the teenage mutant ninja turtles focuses on them individually a lot, so I think that is something the creators noticed as well from the movie.

A huge draw to TMNT for me are the characters & how they differentiate between iterations, it was super fun seeing your opinions on them considering I definitely have different feelings about many of them but agree on other things. I'm not very far in IDW so I muted during the parts when covering it because I want to continue reading with as little spoilers as possible but I don't have enough time in the day to read, I tend to spend a lot of my free time writing. I was watching this in between working on editing one of my chapters these last few days. It's nice hearing little blurbs of what someone likes about the different characters considering a massive writing project I've been taking on, it's still in draft phase & honestly will probably be there for a long time since there's so much I've been trying to cover in it but I've essentially been writing out my own iteration as a fic where I use elements I like from the different iterations, mash it together, & throw in my own twists here & there. I prefer when April & Casey are teens so I set them as 17 years old, still a little older than the turtles but also teens. I even included Vernon as a teen where a woman Casey's dad is dating wants to set Casey up with a boy from her church (my Casey is trans, ftm & not out) so she invites Vern over for dinner & he's just this little kiss up that says whatever he thinks Casey's dad & his girlfriend wants to hear in order to be on their good side. A place where we differ is that I'm cool with 2012 Bishop, like I don't hate him & I find it interesting that they took him in a different direction but I do like 2003 Bishop a lot. When I did some outlining for this fic, looking over it, I could not tell what I wanted to do with my Bishop, I was like, "why are you so dang vague past me?" I mean, I know why, it's because I wanted to have the readers guessing on the direction I was going to take my Bishop but I want to slap past me silly for not noting what I needed to know about him so I ended up going morally gray. He presents as a good guy & hires Mikey to work at the EPF... I know, Donnie was shocked too when he found out about this. Bishop essentially takes steps where he believes it will get the job done most efficiently, not caring on the ramifications of his actions. For example, I gave my Mikey a fear of needles, suppose I remembered that bit about Ronin Mikey without realizing I remembered it, he needed to undergo some stuff before officially coming on as a new hire for the EPF which did include drawing blood so Bishop gives him something to calm his nerves which is essentially an alien drug just because he needs Mikey to hold still. That's one of his more tame actions, his more questionable bits needs a lot of backstory to explain such as allowing April to get captured by the Purple Dragons, that's a whole big mess that requires going into detail on. He's done enough to where all the turtles & Splinter hates his guts but they know they need to work with him because they have common goals. Dunno why but when you were doing the one off 2012 characters, I kind of thought maybe you'd cover Kurtzman but the more I thought about it, he barely had much of a presence like he provided some small importance but as a character, I'm drawing at little to nothing there. I ended up putting him in my story because I wanted a solid detective character that Donnie works alongside. My Donnie tends to be fearful of a lot of things & timid but working with Kurtzman, he's learning a lot about being able to understand people better & deduce various situations, & all together, he's been building up his confidence through out. I ended up having my Kurtzman act as like a fatherly mentor to Donnie which actually wasn't entirely intended. His inclusion in this story is partially because I wanted him to help Donnie gain more of a keen eye for detail but I needed him inserted because I laid out some mysteries that's important to the plot & Kurtzman sees something is going on, isn't entirely sure what to make of it, & wants to utilize the evidence he gathers in order to figure out what is going on. Near the beginning of the story, he notices a strange young individual covered up in a trench coat, scarf, fedora, & sunglasses not hooked onto a set of ears sitting in a laundromat close to 2am so many things about this were striking him as weird so he engages in conversation with Donnie who was nervous at every moment of the whole exchange but he had a feeling this odd kid would lead him to solving a strange case he found himself wrapped up in & that's how the two ended up working with one another. As I was working on my story, I find that I like a lot of things from 2012 like at first, my Leo felt almost like a copy & paste of 2012 Leo, he's even got his own obsession with a scifi show, Astrodoor AD-1 & obsesses over Colonel Jacob McNiff like how 2012 Leo adores Captain Ryan from Space Heroes but I found that he can deliver some cheesy lines like 87 Leonardo. Something unique to him is that he regularly replaces swears with food items which is the funnest like when I hit one of those spots where Leo would cuss, I just put in whatever is the first food that comes to mind. One of the more recent ones I used is, "slice of pecan pie!" My Mikey has a lot of inspiration off of 2012 Mikey but they've got some of Batman Mikey & 2003 Mikey in there too. Oh yeah & will lean more into the creative side like Rise Mikey but also has a love for improv like MM Mikey. They actually get inspired by the game Scenes From a Hat to put the names of their brothers into Raph's fedora (different turtles get their turns with it at various points, his fedora even ends up with the Foot Clan for a short amount of time) & drew out Donnie's name to find out who to tell that they got a job working with the EPF which was supposed to be secret but like, uh yeah, no, they weren't gonna keep that under wraps. One difference I added in is that mine tends to talk with their imaginary friend, an anthropomorphic orange tabby that dresses up all nice & wears a top hat named Sir Klunk who can only feed them information inside their own mind but Sir Klunk tends to point out the things Mikey fails to take in such as a chapter on Raph's perspective when they're sitting around with Mona Lisa, discussing the whole clothes situation since her mutation was still fairly recent as well as the possibility of Donnie making a retromutagen so she'd eventually be reverted back & um, Mikey comments on stuff Sir Klunk needed to point out to them that maybe it's not entirely appropriate. I can give you that paragraph but it's just from the draft plus a detail I left out is that my Mikey is gender fluid, they're currently more neutral here so this is why they're referred to by a different name & gender neutral pronouns. Also, Jase is Mondo Gecko for clarification, kinda combined Mondo from 2012 with Jase from Rise since they're both named Jason, mine worked with the Purple Dragons before mutating & befriending Ange (Mikey). Here's the paragraph: "You'd miss the tail over that awesome tongue of yours? Between Jase and you having wicked long tongues that can strike like a whip, I'm like super duper jealous! I'd love to eat my food like that!" Ange gives a moan then looks behind them, they speak to the air with a loud whisper, "whaddya mean I shouldn't talk about Mona's tongue whipping action in front of Raph?" There's a pause then, "oh.... you have a point there." Their attention snaps back to the group, "so uh, clothes?" Like I mentioned, from the rough draft so there's kinks but a little bit of Ange communicating with Sir Klunk to give an idea the sort of purpose their imaginary friend serves. Yeah, sorry, so much rambling on how I've taken & utilized characters but it's just so dang fun, combining different characters & concepts from across everything & turning it into something new. Love it. Big fan of the characters wrapped up in this franchise in general. In terms of which turtles top my favorites list of each iteration, each makes it to the top of the list at least once with the somewhat exception of Leonardo like Donatellos & Raphaels dominate the favorites spots with some Michelangelos slipping in as well but Leo is an odd one. He's a stand in favorite for Mutant Mayhem but I get the impression that in Tales, Donnie might slide into my favorites slot, don't know for sure though. One place Leo does hit my favorites for sure is We Wish You a Turtle Christmas & that's not exactly a good thing, I love hearing him deliver the cheesy 90's slang & while I haven't seen the sequel yet, I heard he can't swim? Seriously? A turtle that can't swim, even more reason to like Turtle Christmas Leo. Yes, I watched We Wish You a Turtle Christmas & somehow found enjoyment in it. Had to since I wrote a Last Ronin crossover fic with it but that was before I read Lost Years (got started on reading it after the fic was posted) so there's some inconsistencies but it was on Ronin Mikey's perspective so can chalk it up to him getting a little confused on events & locations. It's apart of a massive series I'm working on where the goal is to stuff as many turtles as possible into the 1987 lair with Ronin Mikey being the first added in so I'll have chances to correct the inconsistencies in the future.
