I won’t lie, when the Tales of the TMNT was announced, I was actually pretty curious as to what an animated series would do with the new status quo the movie had set up. The Turtles, previously outcasts, now going to be part of society. How would they cope with being mutants in a human world? How would humans cope with them being mutants in a human world? How would they balance their ninja adventures with regular school, classes and homework? Yeah, this could be interesting! I was kinda psyched to see what the series would do with this... ...annnnd it turns out it didn't do a whole lot with it. You got Bishop and the anti-mutant squad, and some casual human encounters, but really this show doesn't do anything we haven't already seen in previous incarnations. You could have told almost the exact same stories if the Turtles were still outcasts and only known to a few people. Now… there IS a lot to love about this series. The visuals are AWESOME. They took the grungy “street art” look of the CGI movie and translated it to 2D animation, and it looks SO GOOD. The backgrounds are stunning and the character animation, while often choppy, is livelier and more expressive than anything I’ve seen in TNT cartoons before. The action scenes are fast-paced and fluid, and this New York feels LIVED IN. It’s not just a background for the Turtles to run around, it feels like a distinct place with a distinct character. The dialogue is hit-and-miss. There’s some genuinely funny bits here… as well as some absolutely awful “who could possibly think this was remotely funny” bits. The bird poop jokes DEFINITELY got old very quickly. Also, I HATED the Splinter voice thing. Guys, just recast him! We understand that you can't get Jackie Chan to do a series! We'd have been fine with a different voice!
@8ball1802 ай бұрын
Agree on wishing the show did more with the status quo like what does the city think of them beyond taking selfies or maybe instead of costume party they were going to a gala hosted by the mayor which could have given us more insight to what people thought of the superfly incident or mutants in general. Kitsune also mentioned mutants getting sold on the black market so I wish more was done with that also

Another this i didn't like about the dialogue is how poorly differentiated the turtles are. Now, obviously, they'll here and there say stuff specific to each turtle, but there is SO MUCH dialogue from them in this series that just kinda feels like anyone could have said the exact same sentence, and if you're lucky they tack on a little joke at the end that reminds you who's talking. Compared to other incarnations where each turtle's voice (in a dialogue sense, not talking about the acting) is VERY strong and unique, these kinda feel extremely samey in their lines.

I normally have Mikey as my fav or second fav for each iteration, but I do agree with you that his personality in Tales is kinda foggy. Raph is my fav of this iteration because I like how they've written him and ESPECIALLY "Raph vs water" ep resonated with me. The show constantly reminding you nothing ever happened was easily the worst part of the show. Just commit to these stories being real, it doesn't matter if the sequels make it not canon. Just do your own thing because it's good enough, don't feel the need to justify its "canon" with those scenes. Especially since none of the stories were written like Leo and Raph wrote them the turtles act 100% in character with zero bias from Leo or Raph, which would have been added if they really told the stories (as shown in the Turtle Rashomon sequences of episodes 1-6) so it doesn't even take that into consideration. Remove that and the show is way better.

Mikey in tales is reminding me of early IDW Mikey (with hints of an inferiority complex similar to rise Leo) so I actually think he has potential but they just haven’t fully taped into yet so I have high hopes but he’ll still probably won’t be treated worse by the story than 2012 Mikey. Also I think IDW Mikey kind of has bits of all of the different Mikeys (even though it came out before 2012 and rise) like he loves parties(like 87), he’s a slightly annoying jokester who wants to be a super hero(like 03), he’s a lovable “idiot” who’s very trusting and kind (like 2012), he’s the most emotional intelligent and open out his bothers as well as being super optimistic (like rise) and then he has a couple (somewhat) unique traits like him disliking violence, his being the most opposed to being in the foot clan once splinter is leading it, him being able to speak up for himself and some other things I forgot just know oof (if you couldn’t tell IDW Mikey is my favorite Mikey and my favorite IDW turtle)

Before sharing thoughts on the series I wanted to give my two cents about Bishop: Now, I understand 2003 Bishop is cool because of how ruthless yet sarcastic he can be during the fights, but I wouldn't call him entirely evil and it's sad you ignored his arc in Fast Forward. To me, 2003 Bishop is a man who lost his way after realizing he's superior than every human on Earth and as Splinter mentioned he decided to play God. Despite his ego he never was after fame or power, he just was doing his job the way he considered best. And Fast Forward makes it clear that he's a man with noble intentions, he realized his mistake and tried everything to redeem himself. And Baxter Stockman was the living example of his mistakes. I just love how he rushed to save him despite all the torture. In a way, I feel like Stockman became Bishop's closest and best friend for the first time in his life. And I guess you can say Bishop kinda adopted Cody in the last episode?! It just felt like John became his guardian after Darius revealed his hatred for Cody. Now, I understand 2012 Bishop is the most bland one, but still I liked the twist joke of him being an actual alien. His rivarly with Kraang Subprime was cool and he also had some hilarious moments with roasting Fugitoid's new body or hesitating to give high three. 2012 show kinda gave me an idea of potential Raph/Bishop bickering that can be used in future incarnations. Still, while not my favorite Tales Bishop was also quite an interesting take. It may be just me, but I felt like her mechanic arm was kinda a reference to disabled IDW Bishop who had to be basically an Utrom in a body of an adult. Too bad we didn't actually get to see Bishop's relative like in IDW with his crazy father. P.S You know, with all that debates about modern TMNT being woke and fights about black April it feels like Bishop is the perfect character for disability representation. Think about it, it's the second version now where that character has a body anomaly yet he/she prevails and becomes the leader for his/her skills. I think it would've been cool to see once weak person everyone would consider a garbage become one of the strongest, smartest and most efficient characters in TMNT.
@torisaursky2 ай бұрын
Very well said! I did enjoy 2003 Bishop’s story during Fast Forward, but it’s something we don’t see built up during the main series and is completely isolated to that season (which isn’t a bad thing, I mean a lot can change in 100 years so good for him haha). During the main 2003 story, he’s just a villain with a deep hatred and goal that makes him a bit sadistic which is the main appeal for him as an antagonist for me :P

I also loved the little insights into the Mutanimals when we got them. I want them to exist! Someone else commented that they were hoping to get insights on what the Turtles' lives are like now that they're integrated into human society and were disappointed that it never happened. I share the sentiment. I would have loved to see them going to school and dealing with teachers and trying to fit in and all of that. Why can't high school be seen as an adventure by the turtles? They have a brand new world to explore, and we don't get to see them partake in any of it. Are there people that are still afraid of the Turtles because they're different? Are there people who want to exploit there celebrity? Are there kids in their year that have crushes on them? Such a wasted opportunity. I suppose AO3 will have to fill in the gaps.

Where fans were still trying to campaign for it's main animated series to get greenlit again for a season 3. Or another movie. I was an avid watcher and fan of 2012, and felt it's story came to a conclusion when it was fully completed. Despite it ending in 2017 with ROTTMNT airing in 2018. Both shows were drastically different from each other in both how it presented the characters and the stories they told. But ROTTMNT and Tales feel too similar to me in how it portrays the characters and it's story narratives. Legit, Tales feels like ROTTMNT but younger to me instead of a completely different iteration. And honestly, despite the hard work and effort the shows team put into it, even when it's movie was in theaters and the series was announced. Again, fans were still campaigning for Rise to come back. The best substitute for Jackie Chan as Splinter would have been the actor James Sie. Sie played Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan Adventures. Sie also starred in the various Kung Fu Panda shows and video games as Monkey (voiced by Chan on the big screen) He also has a long voice acting career in cartoons and video games. He's also worked on Nickelodeon shows including the Avatar as the Cabbage Merchant (legend), Kwan on Danny Phantom and the first Kung Fu Panda show. He is the best option for a canon Splinter voice

Honestly, the network isn't going to let the show bring in its own big story unless its still up and running when they get however many movies they wanna make. If its still running by then? I genuinely think if this continues after the movies then they could do something big with everything they have available. Personally looking forward to the implications of a single dad seahorse with hundreds of children to take care of. That would be insane to see.

I also didn't get the 'Mikey vibe' from this version of Mikey, which was really disappointing as Mikey is my favourite character. Now I will say, that the fight scenes were amazing! I thought they were fantastic, however, for that they were kinda the only thing i enjoyed. To be fair i came into tales after not really enjoying the movie, but hoped that tales would engage me more, however I just didn't connect with this version, which has rather bummed me out, as i really wanted to enjoy the newest TMNT revamp. I did not enjoy Scumbug AT ALL, or wing nut, and the 1000 references that I didn't care about, it just made enjoying the episodes really hard. And the whole 'vermin speak' thing....clever way of working around the JC voice issue, but guys, just replace him, there are plenty of good VAs out there who could have nailed a Splinter voice, and it felt unnecessary. Also, the bird poop stuff with PP? Ew, just...No guys, no. Pulling fart and poop gags is something that was meant to have died a LONG time ago for a solid reason. I'm going to give the next season a chance to win me over, but for now i'm afraid that Tales doesn't have my vote.

Such a shame they were worried about canonicity and Jackie Chan's voice, the writting is really strong and cohesive with the movie, the new character designs on point. Tales is very hit-or-miss for me. When it’s good it’s really good, but when it’s bad it’s almost unbearable to watch for me. Starting with the characters, I personally don’t like this version of April. I think she’s really annoying and doesn’t really add much to the series overall. Leo from Mutant Mayhem is my least favorite iteration of the character. He’s lame and dorky which is fine, but him having a thing for April is just unnecessary and really bogs down the character. I’m glad he isn’t simping for her the whole time like in the movie. For some reason they lobotomized Ray Fillet in between the show and the movie so he can only say like 3 phrases, and the whole Splinter voice thing is incredibly distracting. The rest of the characters are either I like or a just whatever. My main problems with the show is the dialogue and the episode length. The constant references to pop culture were unbearable to sit through. It’s not like in 2012 where there was at least some effort to incorporate the reference either visually or in dialogue without it being distracting. They just mention shows or movies for the sake of referencing them. It just feels like “Hey we know this thing”. As for the episode length, some episodes really drag on, like the writers were just artificially stretching the story to fit the runtime. This is especially prevalent in the second half of the season. So often will two characters be fighting and just randomly stop for no reason. Like it episode 8, Lee will just stop fighting and dive back into the water for seemingly no reason. Characters will also just stand around sometimes and will often retread information already seen in the episode. This is why episode 10 is so hard to watch for me. The constant references and the fact that Donnie and Wingnut ultimately achieve nothing and don’t progress the narrative in a meaningful way makes it a drag to watch. It’s hard to describe exactly what I mean, but if you go back and watch you really feel the moments when they’re wasting time to reach the 22 minute runtime. The show really could have benefitted from a shorter episode length. It should have been like Rottmnt where important episodes are 22 minutes while the rest of the episodes are 11 minutes. There are some things I liked about it. I like the style, the animation is great and sometimes downright breathtaking, and I liked a majority of the characters. For the type of character Rod was, he could have been really annoying so I’m they didn’t go that route, while I think Bishop’s backstory is kind of weak(it really just seems like she’s mad they broke her toy) she was a good villain, and the East River Three were great overall. I was willing to give this a shot even though I didn’t really like Mutant Mayhem that much(it really fell apart in the third act for me) and they did improve some of the problems I had with the movie. Overall I think it’s worth a watch, but it doesn’t really hold a candle to the other series. It’s pitfalls are just too much for me to overlook

I think the show is kinda decent. It has callbacks to several characters from other iterations which was pretty cool (lookin' at you Pigeon Pete, Mutagen Man and of course Metalhead). The animation style while not stellar, is unique in it's own vibe and the voices for the boys are done well. I also thought it was clever how they handled Splinter's lack of voice since obviously Jackie couldn't be there....but what kills it for me are all those damned modern cultural references!! I get it, this is a 2024 baby, I dont need to be slapped over the head every second with them knowing who Beyonce, or BTS is (and as a proud Army, that's saying something). Overall, I do think they should give this series a chance on tv and maybe two or three more well paced seasons. It's not that bad. Later edit: what the heck happended to my man Bishop?! When can we actuall get a badass version of one of the coolest villains in TMNT and it be a man like in 2003?!

Even then shes still shown to be evil only reluctantly helping the turtles and when given the choice to build robots against mutants she immediately goes for it despite the fact that without the help of the turtles the city would've been destroyed.
