I'm 39 and I got this game Christmas '89 if I recall. Raph is the worst turtle so he would always be the turtle I kept in reserve while I vacillated between Leo and Mike. I would use Don for boss fights. The technodrome for me was the hardest part of the game. I always had a knack for the water level and could usually knock it out with no damage taken. It took me a good solid year to get that good at the game.

I never had this one as a kid but I'm really glad I finally gave it a try. I think Raph was commonly used as a damage sponge in order to preserve the more valuable turtles, which is what I did in my first playthrough as well. Beating the water stage without taking damage is super impressive though. I don't think I've ever done that. The hitboxes are so strange in that area. Thanks for watching!

Congrats! I played this game as a kid in the 90’s but wasn’t able to beat it until 2010 when I finally realized you can load up on scrolls from the warehouse in stage 5. I would keep entering and exiting until each turtle had 99 scrolls, then cruise through the rest of the game without much trouble, lol. I never would’ve guessed you could beat Shredder without any scrolls or subweapons, but good job!

Thanks and congrats for finishing the game as well! That's exactly what I did when I beat the game for the first time...loaded up each turtle with scrolls and made full use of them. Just have to watch out for those pesky subweapon drops that will replace your scrolls if picked up!

Two things I liked about this run. 1. You actually took damage and at certain points looked like you might die. To me it is more fun watching someone make periodic mistakes and still succeed than watch someone who is like a robot and nearly perfect. 2. You got unlucky in stage 5 and had to do all 3 cave parts. That last one was an absolute doozy.

Thanks for sticking around for the whole run. This was like the millionth attempt and the only time I ever succeeded at this challenge so I was barely able to do it at some parts. I agree about the bad luck with the caves too. I was really glad that I got unlucky and got to showcase them all. I completed a Raph only, no subweapons challenge a couple of weeks later and that run gave me the Technodrome in the very first cave. As Raph though, there was a good chance I would have died if it didn't, especially if I had to visit the cave in the bottom left. That one is particularly nasty with Raph. Came up clutch in a very difficult spot in level 4, and then the end of level 5/beginning of 6 where 1 hit would end the run was epic impressive! & I appreciate the little things like firing the extra missile at the building he’s about to raid, or going all the way back to farm a pizza after getting hit by a bubble projectile that didn’t appear to cause any damage at all. Idk if I’d have the patience to pass through some of these sections at an Agent 47’s pace like this, but it’s really the only way. Great run!

Normally I wouldn't go into that third cave/sewer in the bottom left but there is a random element in this game that makes it to where the Technodrome appears in one of three possible areas, and it just so happened to appear in the bottom left which is the worst place for it to be. I was so lucky to make it to that pizza inside the Technodrome without taking another hit after getting beaten up so badly. It was a clutch moment indeed. I'm also glad someone noticed the fun missile being fired into the building! That was just me goofing around, which I tend to do a lot (sometimes to my detriment). About 2 weeks after completing this run I was able to finish a Raph only, no subweapons run as well and during that time I noticed that the bubbles don't actually seem to do any damage at all. In one of my failed runs I got hit like 4 times by a bubble and never lost any health so it may be that I didn't need to return to get that pizza after all, but at the time I was so concerned about my health that I had to since the life meter doesn't always reflect the actual damage you've taken. That stage has some awful hitboxes on the seaweed/coral and the time limit is pretty tight. I think it's probably the stage that stopped the most people in their tracks but it's certainly possible with some practice. That would be pretty hilarious if it was actually the final stage in the game though. Thanks for watching!

Oh yes! Many people were scarred for life by that part. The time limit is tight so you pretty much have to know which way to go and the hitboxes of the seaweed/coral are pretty awful. Out of all of the times I've played this game, I've never been able to get through the seaweed/coral part without getting hit. It's technically possible, but I've certainly never done it. One thing that's usually underestimated in this game is Michelangelo's reach. His 'chucks can hit enemies almost two Turtle-widths away, and we get ample opportunity to see it here in Area 4.

@@Deined Thanks! It definitely made me a bit nervous having to go through that third tunnel but ultimately I'm glad I got to showcase all three areas. You're right though...Mike's extended range is quite useful in parts and I'm glad I tried this playthrough before the Raphael only one. I still don't have a good strategy for that sewer in the bottom left corner that the Technodrome can be in if I'm playing as Raph but fortunately I got lucky in his playthrough and didn't have to go there. As someone who used to beat this game a lot as a kid and even as an adult on occasion I have to clap my hands to you at beating this with imo the worst turtle in the game. I think Ralph and Mike's range is about the same with forward attacks but Mike has far worse and almost no above attack and his damage is on the low end

Thanks and congrats for beating this game as well. It isn't an easy one! I had a harder time with the Raph only, no subweapons run mainly because of the whirly enemies inside the Technodrome. If Mike is down to half health or less then he can destroy them in one hit, whereas Raph always has to hit them twice. That coupled with his awful range forces you to be really precise with your movements in that final stretch. Raph was better at the actual fight against the Technodrome though because for some odd reason Mike's upward attack cannot hit the turrets but Raph's can. If you want to see it, there are two versions of the Raph only, no subweapons playthrough as well. One has commentary that explains some of what I'm doing and the other does not. Don't know if it's a glitch or not, but supposedly if Mikey's health is at half or lower, his attacks is suddenly as strong and Donny's, with the added advantage of a much faster attack speed. He makes for a good backup Donny if you can risk staying at half health

I speedrun this, and have learned some nice tech, including the fact that if you throw out a melee attack, then switch to your subweapon, your melee damage is calculated off the subweapon. So say you throw out an attack and switch on scrolls - That melee attack will do scroll damage. And if the turtle is under 50% health? That damage multiplier is applied to your subweapon damage, so you can get 1.5x strength scroll damage through melee! You can positively MELT bosses this way.

Great run! The dam level is so infamous, but a lot of people don't know it gets worse. 😵 I can't remember if I managed to beat it or not. I think I might have lost at the final gauntlet and just couldn't stand the idea of starting all over.

Thanks! The trick I use at Shredder always guarantees a victory. I have a video with commentary where I explain it but basically you just need to put your nose against the yellowish thing in the background exactly where I'm standing and he cannot hit you. Otherwise it can be tricky fighting him normally since his hitbox is rather strange. If you managed to get all the way to Shredder then you're definitely able to do it!

Shredder is really easy if your Donatello get on the top right knock shredder off and all he'll do is keep jumping at you and all you gotta do is hit him each time he jumps at you

@@subledger. If you do decide to take Battletoads on one day, make sure to play on a CRT so there's no input lag at all. Level 11 requires perfect timing, and there are 12 levels, so it is a horrible time to hit a wall because of your hardware. XD And I will definitely watch your Raph run too!

A lot of young players complain about the Dam and how hard it was, but honestly, I used to complete that as a kid while taking little to no damage. Even on that pink electric seaweed hallway. Have to admit though, I never beat the game with Mikey. Only Leo and Don.

I always heard how horrible the dam was too but that wasn't really the part that gave me the most trouble. For me it was that part with the moving spiked walls, the path to the Technodrome, or the Technodrome interior. Kind of reminds me of how the Turbo Tunnel is so notorious in Battletoads but the game gets so much harder than that. Nice work beating the game with Leo and Don though. I actually haven't done that yet. I've done Mike only and Raph only but I'll eventually do a Leo only and a Don only for fun. Thanks for watching!

I was almost certain that part was going to be the end. What surprised me is that those rolly guys don't just roll under the purple blocks. They oddly get stuck and just kind of hang out under them, making it hard to progress. Then there was the awful porcupine enemy that you can't really avoid...yeah that place is awful. I never found a good way through it and was never able to make it at all in my Raph only playthroughs. In those I just had to hope that the Technodrome wasn't in this particular area. I love the references to some of the older games and the attention to detail like when the foot soldier is writing something down in episode 1, the foot soldier rolling off of the bench in episode 4, and the cashiers in episode 6. Oh and the spray painting of the foot soldiers around the 1 hour, 16 minute mark. Anyways, great job with the playthrough. I think I'm going to have to pick that game up at some point. So I speedrun this game (23:13) and in the run, you almost exclusively lean on Donny with single shurikens or scrolls for a subweapon. So to see someone just run Shredder's pockets with Mikey and NO subweapons was a treat to see! Have you considered speedrunning this? It seems like you have a pretty good understanding of the game's tech. I'd love to see what you could do with it! I can even point you to a dank tutorial that's quite comprehensive!

Never tried speedrunning any game actually, but respect to those who do. You folks are on a whole other level. I've never watched any speedruns of this game but I just found your Twitch channel so I'll have to check it out. I would think some of the randomness like which enemy sets appear, subweapon drops, and the Technodrome location would be frustrating but perhaps there have been manipulations discovered for those things. I guess I'll have to look into it in order to find out! Oh and that clip from Mega Man 2 had me laughing. Maybe you're gonna die, maybe you're gonna live forever and ever...never mind 🙃

I actually did manage to pull it off with Raph about two weeks later. I didn't think it would be that much worse than Mike's run but it was! Raph's attack is stronger than Mikes as long as Mike has more than half health but it's not much stronger so those whirly enemies in the Technodrome still take two hits to kill with Raph. If Mike has less than half health then he can actually defeat them in one shot. Plus of course Mike's range is better. I have a video of the Raph run with commentary and another without if you wanted to see how it looked. April is a scammer! At around the 34:40 mark she tells Mike to "Find and help your friends in this stage" and then at around 35:05 she tells him that "Weapons and pizza are in the building". Both rescuing our friends and grabbing one of those weapons would invalidate this run so she is trying to trick us! We never had her support to begin with. 🤣 Thanks for watching!

When a turtle is at half health, they get a damage boost. Even works for the subweapons. Raph's main weapon doesn't get one, however.

So for whatever reason Raph never gets a boost (I knew that) and the boomerang also never gets a boost (didn't know that) but all other turtles and subweapons do. In this Mike only run I was able to destroy the whirly robot enemies in the Technodrome in one shot if I had low health (12 damage according to your list) but in my Raph playthrough they took two hits (9 damage according to your list). That makes me curious if when I try the Leo playthrough if his 10 damage will be enough to destroy them in one shot. They must have somewhere between 10 and 12 hit points unless the game changes the values for whatever reason. Fun stuff!

Yeah isn't that a strange glitch? I didn't show it in this video but if you pause during the battle and then unpause, the bandana color returns to normal. I can't say exactly why from a technical perspective (if someone reading this knows then please chime in) but depending on certain factors you will be given a different enemy set when you enter a new area. Sometimes you can just leave and come back in and that will be enough to switch it up, but I think certain areas also depend on the number of kills you have. I actually use this to my advantage in some locations to get enemies I'm more comfortable with by just leaving and returning. As for some enemies just not appearing at all, I would imagine it's due to a sprite limitation of the NES where only so many sprites/characters/objects can be on the screen at once so if you already have a screen full of things going on then the next enemy may not spawn. I'll be interested to see if anyone with a more solid understanding replies to this and tells us for sure. Thanks for watching!

Yeah so strange that the mask changes colors when Shredder appears like that. I speak about it a little bit in my video with the commentary but it would be interesting to hear someone who actually understands the code explain why this happens. @@babkaBkedax That's true. I'm actually not too familiar with the other passages so that could be fun. There may even be smarter/better ways to get through the game than the paths I took. Maybe a "full exploration" run or something would cover all of that. Only problem I can see with that would be with finding the Technodome since it's in one of three random locations. If I found the correct path before exploring the other two incorrect paths then that wouldn't be full exploration and I'd have to reset. I'd have to think about how to approach that one. Oh now that I think about it there's one more spot inside the Technodrome where the path splits and you can only take one of the two possible passages. Hmm. An "all pizzas eaten" challenge wouldn't be possible either since there's one pizza in the area with the spiked walls that close in that is not possible to get as far as I know, but it would still be "found" at least.

@@EdmanXERO Good point! That cartoon had quite a few instances of mistakes. I remember color errors as well as the wrong voice coming out of the wrong turtle at times. The box art for this game has each turtle wearing red and I know at least some of the comics do too so yeah let's just say the game developers did it on purpose as tribute. I like that :)

Not that I know of but maybe I never made the connection from one of the Contra games to this one. The company behind this game (Ultra Games) was closely related to the company behind Contra (Konami) so a lot of it sounds similar. I'm pretty sure the sound effect that the bombs make when the planes drop them in the overworld airport area in this game is the same noise as when the bridge explodes in the jungle stage of Contra, and when the dynamite explodes in the Snowy Field. If it isn't the same, it's close.

Mike's solo run was the first one I did, mainly because I only planned to do one playthrough using the worst turtle but once I found out that Raph was actually a harder playthrough then I ended up doing his, and then just had to finish it out with the other two. Such a challenging but fun game!

@@emmerson6170Mike's run can be harder in some spots. One example is that Mike cannot hit the turrets of the Technodrome boss by swinging his weapon upwards (44:37), and instead he has to jump. Raph can actually just stand and swing his sai upwards to hit them. The hardest part for Raph (at least for me) was those whirly enemies in the final level. Since his range is so limited, it's really hard for him to hit those enemies and not get hurt himself.

I have no idea but I've wondered that as well. Only thing I can figure is that maybe this was originally supposed to be its own original game and Ultra Games got the license to use the TMNT theme part of the way through and just left the original enemies in. That's a great question. If you're talking about the section at around 4:30 in the video then I'm not so sure it's possible. I tried the jump glitch in that spot so many times in previous attempts and was never able to pull it off. It looks like it's the same height as the other places that the trick works so I'd love to hear someone explain why it doesn't work here even though it works in those other places. Maybe it has something to do with the platform being different than the ones that work. Or maybe it does work here and I just never successfully pulled it off. If someone reading this knows the answer then please post it so we can learn. Thanks for watching!
