I was born and raised in this town...went to the same high school as her but that was in the late 90s. Yorkton is small , not much to do and every young person's dream was to get out and experience something.. anything. That bus "depot" never had cameras and I recall taking the bus back to Yorkton where if your bus rolled in after midnight, the depot would be CLOSED! So you had to be prepared to have made arrangements for someone to pick you up or have change to call a cab from a payphone outside. I don't blame her for wanting to expand her horizons and see "what else is out there". Unfortunately, I think she encountered the wrong person and had a nefarious ending. Thanks for covering this case, Dr. G.

Excellent observation. I said the same above. He groomed her and coaxed into trying to get a hotel room to prove her sexual worthiness to him. But, he then just said, we'll go to my house and you can show me. And, he toyed with her a few days, and killed her when she didn't continue playing his game. Or that's how I would have done it. Sorry, of course, if I was a bad man.

I was thinking the same thing. A young girl with no positive male role model desiring male attention could easily be persuaded to join him for "a better life". There are very evil people in this world and unfortunately, the internet has provided the predators with more access to more victims.

I doubt that very much. If her abductor ordered her to do this, why did he wait several hours first? Why didn't he direct her to the bus station immediately? @@korneliusjansen542 She was waiting at the restaurant for a couple of hours texting and making phone calls. She appeared to be looking for someone to come pick her up. I'm sure the guy was full of excuses of why he wasn't there yet. He may have even been driving by the restaurant and decided that it was too risky to pick her up there, so he told her to go to the bus depot and take a bus to Regina. That could have been a ploy to lure her away from a business with security cameras. He may or may not have known the bus schedule. It wouldn't have mattered either way because if she did catch a bus to Regina he could have followed it back to that city and abducted her there instead. I'm guessing that he abducted her somewhere near the bus depot. I don't know how Mollie knows what the abductor knew or didn't know (no security cameras at the bus depot?) but he may have known that or just lured her away from it instead. So far he's gotten away with her murder. That was almost 7 years ago. He's probably a serial killer and will eventually get caught and they may be able to connect him to this disappearance (they only suspect these types of other murders but unless they confess - very few do - they have no proof in most of these cases).

Isn't it more likely that she met some random guy (maybe a very young fellow) online and made all these plans that kept falling through because he was, in fact, too young to accomplish them? She kept waiting and watching, and even checked on a bus ticket but, ultimately, when he couldn't get to her as "planned" (maybe more wishful thinking on her part than actual intention on his), she decided to hitchhike to him. THEN she encountered a bad actor. This hypothetical "man" derives only from a friend's statement that Mekayla claimed "a man" was coming to meet her (which simply doesn't sound like the way girls talk. "A guy" would have been more natural) and Dr. Grande's rather tenuous suggestion of her "lack of a reliable male figure in her life."
@Broskibrother

I had a friend who got "romantically" involved with a man online when she was 12 or 13. She went for a "date" with him and was abducted. It was a guy in his late twenties and his friend, I think they may have been meth heads. She went to a couple of different areas and at some point they saw a car on the shoulder of the interstate and they stopped to steal the sound system from that car which didn't fit in the trunk or something like that so she had to ride in the trunk and they saw the man walking down from the nearest exit with a gas can yelling at them so they piled in and I guess the angry guy threw something that broke a window or something like that then they stopped somewhere and before they left the cops intercepted them and they found her. She was like 3 states away. I met her the next year and she never told me about it until 15 years later. Crazy stuff. The sad part is she said on Snapchat (and maybe on some other chat rooms or something) she doesn’t have any friends in real life, and that can really help predators manipulate her and make her a good target. She clearly wanted a boyfriend or friends in general and may have cost her own safety. She is young , trusting and I’m sure wanted to get away for a little. But maybe now forever. I really do hope she is alive, but it’s probably a low chance of that.

In my opinion, she's dead. I thought that from the get-go. What gave me the indiction, is that she was trying to obtain some extra money and asking for assistance in getting a hotel room. I think that she was lied to and told that $5k was going to be deposited in her account, and when she realized it was a not real she then started making strange decisions and doing things that were “out of character”….I just can’t understand what made her feel like she couldn’t just go back home and move on with her life. So that makes me feel like she was possibly very embarrassed to go back home and face her peers after she made those claims of having all that money and running away for a life of riches and luxury, etc. She probably felt so embarrassed because she didn’t really have any true friends to begin with, and would only be seen as even more of a “weirdo” for lying about the money. So that tells me she was most likely catfished and truly thought she was running off and starting a new life with this handsome and rich mystery man, only to be let down when the mystery man turned out to be some old and creepy loser with no money. That’s my theory. I’m probably wrong, but it’s what I think played out. It’s just a sad case all around.

I have a theory about this case: she met a man online and sent them photos that were “compromising”. They blackmailed her that they would publish the photos online unless she agreed to meet them at a specific time and place- essentially running away from home. And they would likely have convinced her that her life would be in no immediate danger but she likely understood that this was incredibly risky. They would also most likely promise to take care of her. Either that, or they threatened to harm her family and/or friends if she didn’t agree to run away. And now, she is either not alive or has been trafficked.

This story is so heart breaking! I think why "the guy" couldn't pick her up is because he isn't who she thinks he is. She wouldn't get in the car with some dumpy crazy man because she thinks he's a good looking young man. He lured her step by step right into his lair only to unalive her. I can't imagine the horror of walking through a door and realizing you were so deceived. It makes me feel sick to my stomach! If some guy told me to take my phone apart so NOBODY can trace me I'd say "kiss my a**" and "goodbye." I wish she had noticed the red flag but being sweet, young and naive she trusted what he told her. I hope I'm wrong wrong wrong and she is living happily somewhere.

Your probably right, as this guy seemed paranoid about protecting his identity, and also likely used a fake profile and pics to attract her, and didn't reveal himself until it was too late for her, then likely raped her, and killed her. Not that these guys plan to kill, but they do so, so their not reported to the Cops. If this guy did this all the time, there would be a lot more killings in the area. Probably some man between 45 and 55 yrs old, I would think.

Crazy! Just discovered your channel and was pleasantly surprised to see you cover this!! I work with mekaylas mom and was talking with her when she got word mekayla was not at school when her grandmother went to pick her up. Her mother immediately left work as this was not normal for her. There was word she had two phones. Your assessment is the same as most people around here, she at times had a low self esteem and most believe she was groomed by some creep. I personally think this guy was making her run all over town to make sure no one was watching her. I believe he or they were directing her on what to say and do all day to throw people off. There was a large sum of cash in her home in case of emergency and that was untouched. She left everything behind. Her dad is a deadbeat who came out of the woodworks to cause her mother more pain and issues. Mekayla played piano and was a good big sister. The family has never been the same (obviously) and we don't feel the police are even looking anymore. I can't imagine having no answers and I see mekaylas mom daily. I don't know how she keeps trucking along. Thank you so much for bringing attention to this. Mekayla would be 23 today and still no answers. April 12th will be 7 years. 😢. Her mother is a lovely lady and so is her grandmother and siblings. This was a horrible err in judgement for mekayla that did not end well. She didn't even like going for sleepovers. She would not have left on her own for this long. Also, Regina rhymes with vagina fyi 😂

When I saw that guy on the footage it sent chills up my spine. He turns to a group of guys having breakfast and asks then something and at that moment in the video, she looks up at him like she recognized his voice or something. They had sex and then he held her hostage and branded her for trafficking. He also tried to get rid of her tattoo. She said that was the most painful. Anyways, somehow she got a hold of a phone, called her mom, told her mom to call the police if she doesn’t come back, stole the man’s wallet, bought a plane ticket back to NY with his money. If Mekayla is still alive she would be over 18 years old now. If her relatonship with her mum was bad at the time there could be a good reason for her, as a minor, to just disappear from the radar for some time, but now she would be an adult making her own decisions. Still there’s nothing to be heard from her. I agree with Dr. Grande’s “bad actor” conclusion. Why all this running around, sending a message to a friend that she needs help, then asking a lady to book a hotelroom for her, then going to school telling some friends that she is leaving, the large amount of money she would be having in the bank. It’s very probable this girl was instructed by sb to set up a smoke screen, which would finally lead to her own demise.

Actual Police hat tried already everything to potential come in posession of protocols but unfortunately the apps back in the days only saved protocols for this and this time and some dont even save anything and when the police finally hat offical permission to force the protocols they were already gone. Another thing is, that on the CCTV-Footage she appears to phone to someone but these calls were never noticed in the protocols regarding her phone. When she is not pretending to talk to someone, it is very likely she posessed a secret second phone (propably an advise from the person she talked to) that the police can't track without knowing the number. The case is defacto cold since then, because all hints, that were given since are dead ends.

Nobody dealt realistically with what was going on. I am grateful she lived thru her adolecense and into adulthood. The main problem was lack of parental supervision. It is a grave mistake to supervise kids from the point of view that they need their privacy. Awesome Dr. Grande, another Canadian analysis. Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan, though it is one of more sparse population. The name of the Queen, our Monarch, ( now deceased ) was the Regina (Latin for King, or Queen, but not despot) that we have on our coins. Sometimes deep pain is disguised in deep efforts to get somewhere, or achieve something, and it is the difficult passage which creates character. But like the Monarch Butterfly ( a Regina in its own right ) we must come to death to achieve life. As you said, her struggles started in her Christian class, so too as humans we struggle to die to our “ego” - Old Life. Thanks !!✅🥺💚🥺💚🥺

It has nothing to do with personality. Rent and home prices are ridiculously high. I moved over 3 thousand miles from home because there was no hope of me ever owning a home in my state and I am a professional person with a degree that typically makes >70k.

The fact that Mekayla’s bank account hasn’t been used for nearly 7 years. Since the day that she disappeared on Tuesday 12th April 2016 that what worries me the most. If someone is alive they would be spending money. You need money to survive. So I don’t think she’s still alive. But I still have some hope. The police have confirmed that Mekayla hasn’t used her bank account/bank card since her disappeared so I’m sure that a concern that the police have as well.

@@SirenaSpades I doubt that. She wasn't that attractive to traffic off for sex imo. Likely she met an older man online ( maybe married) who wanted to have sex with a young girl, and maybe raped her. He obviously didn't want to get caught, so he then killed her to make sure he wouldn't. I think this happens in a lot of these cases. I don't think a lot of these men plan to kill, but after what they've done, they realize there's only 1 way to make sure. If there was a serial killer loose, he would have kept on killing. I also think she's likely dead, but you don't know for sure ?

How sad for her family not knowing. Although your "bad actor" theory is the most likely scenario there was a case of teen runaway girl here (Australia) that went 'missing' for over ten years but she was living with her boyfriend all along. Her family made appeals to the public in the press and were devastated. When she eventually got in touch If I recall correctly her reasoning for waiting so long was she felt like once she committed to leaving she felt like she couldn't return. Which is totally selfish. But I think the man she was with did have a level of control over her mind. However according to her he didn't physically harm or mistreat her. So maybe there is hope yet for Makayla. I know that it is only a very small percentage of ppl that go missing for years and then return.

I also agree that she was probably catfished by someone pretending to have a romantic interest but actually trying to harm her. But I'm basing that mainly on what typically happens in such cases, not on her behaviour that day. In fact, I don't agree at all that her behaviour that day appears to have been directed by someone who wanted to harm her. Why would this person send her around for hours instead of simply telling her to go to a secluded area? Why would he order her to talk to strangers to get money? Why did he tell her to ask an old lady for help? Why would he tell her to go back to her school? All these things don't make much sense in the context of the "foul play" scenario. I don't really have an answer to reconcile these observations, but I think we should be careful not to squeeze everything into a single scenario. It seems that several unlikely factors came together that day to cause her strange behaviour.

Dude... The person/he didn't order her to do all of that stuff. They/he didn't tell her to ask the elderly woman for money. Or to go back to school. She decided to do all that. She was faffing about trying to fulfil a bigger order or goal. Like - get money in general. She faffed about because the plans were being concoted by a homicidal cat fish and a teenager trying to leave town/acquire money/ be adult for the first time on her own. That's all. She was likely trying impress the person she met by showing she had some form of capability on her own to get somewhere by herself, too.

He was moving her around to make sure she was alone. Any undercover police sting would never let their "bait" keep moving from location to location, it would be too dangerous. This person had bad intentions, and sadly it seems like they have done this before.

@friencheetah She was definitely not moved around to make sure she was alone. Anyone with bad intentions could have just waited outside the school to see that she was indeed alone. Besides, moving her the way she did would be the clumsiest way to do it. As for an undercover police investigation, I have no idea what that means. It certainly wasn't one.

this case is so interesting to me especially because right before the pandemic i was drinking in this street filled with bars and clubs where i went to almost every weekend. people would approach me and compliment me on my buzzcut and i talked to so many people, and one day this drunk girl complimented my hair and i complimented her red curly hair and her friends/roommates later joined our conversation and the red haired girl disappeared and they called her kayl and kaylee and only she spoke with a british accent. months later i thought of that moment again and i brushed it off because i was drunk that evening and i see a lot of faces. but she has a really particular face, one that stayed in my mind, and maybe my brain is playing games with me but i might have seen her. haarlem, netherlands. im not convinced though but it will always stay on my mind

She may have been trafficked. This lines up the most. From what I understand trafficking is an issue in sparser regions of the US and Canada. I think this is actually more likely than homicide and explains why the bad actor did not give her money and wanted her to come to a different city. Sightings are not usually reliable but if she has been trafficked it is possible. She likely woukd look different. So I think there is a good chance she is alive though its unlikely she is in Canada.

She sounds like she was so very vulnerable. It’s really unfair that small decisions or an extension of just a little trust can have such dire consequences to young people. Also, small thing and the other Canadians may have already said it but your pronunciation of Regina is adorable and very smooth. We say Rehj-eye-nah. As Deadpool says, it’s the city that rhymes with fun. ^_^

She got in over her head. Has happenned to young girls forever. Social media makes girls her age sitting ducks. Parents need to get brutally honest with their daughters about how low a male will go for even a single sex act. Men murder for less than nothing. This young woman was looking for trouble and found it.

Taking her phone apart putting it back together he knows how to hide where cameras were and I'm not sure that any jewelry or anything like that. He wanted to meet her somewhere else wouldn't tell her and maybe that's all she could afford to take out a day from her ATM. So lots of red flags that poor family

What if the odd behaviour was a result of the onset of some type of psychosis or delusional behaviour that can show up at that vulnerable teenage time? There might be something in the religious background that might encourage a willingness to trust the delusions as that of a higher power, like Andrea Yates.
