You can't really place blame on someone who wasn't trained or informed on how to completely use the autopilot or know that you can still operate functions of the airplane while the autopilot was operating. This is the fault Aeroflot or even Airbus depending on if Airbus informed Aeroflot of this function or if it was Aeroflot not training their pilots in the simulator on this function. I don't blame him for wanting to show his kids what he does so they can get a thrill! I might have done the same I mean I doubt I'd let my daughter sit in the seat and manipulate the console but I understand why he did it! It's just sad. You can see even the copilot doesn't know how to handle the issue either so it's universal! God bless them all

@@RedRoses199 technically it was just the son that actually turned the plane. The daughter merely rested her hands on the controls and the son was the one who turned the way he did. It would probably happen at some point that the pilots of another flight maybe would discover by accident the autopilot disconnects if you push it for 30 seconds but in that case the pilot would've been in his seat and taken precautions and leveled the plane! It wasn't such a fault that would cost lives if it wasn't for the kid sitting in the chair but on the other hand it's not like the pilot said here you go son, you fly the plane for real and let's see where you can get it! He thought of fooling the kids a bit for fun and for inspiration! He shouldn't have done it of course! At the end of the day this is one of the ways society learns and advances since prehistoric times the guy who ate the poisoned mushroom or fruit and died showed the others what to avoid eating! It's unbelievable how easily people could just go into the cockpit and hijack a plane before 9/11. Twin towers had to come down for people to finally take measures!

Agreed, he held in a position long enough to where the ailerons disconnected with barely any warning, and when the pilots first spotted the problem, it was turning sharply to the point where an arc showed up on one of the systems, which caused confusion. Although he allowed this to happen, it is totally not his fault as he didn’t know either the autopilot could partially disconnect nor that letting go would solve the problem

It's not just a lesson for the aviation industry, it's a lesson for all of us. If the health and well being is a responsibility of yours, no matter how exceptional you are, no matter how many people you have beaten to earn your powers, it is not your choice to jeopardize on your responsibility by believing on your knowledge. There will always be things unknown and out of our hands. And sometimes, improbable events like this would eventually take shape if done so.

Nope. Even if it happened today. Some prison sentence and paroled in 4-5 years. I wouldn't be surprised, if they would be allowed to go back to fly planes. There was a mid-air collision in USSR. 1979. The whole famous football squad "Pakhtakor" got killed among 178 people on both planes. The strongest football team in Central Asia at that time. A national tragedy. It was an air traffic controller's mistake. He was sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony (! not a prison), but served only 6. The chief controller on duty that day, was not prosecuted. And that was the USSR strict society that had a death penalty and the list one could get it -- is endless ! He killed 178 people and ... got 6 years ???

if there's kids in the cockpit they should keep hands in pockets or arms crossed. especially as the boy was tired, it's more likely that they would knock something. As a pilot having anyone else touch the controls would make me panic so hard. I don't know if their life in Russia had relaxed rules allowing this sort of thing in their past, but to me allowing anyone else in the cockpit seems like a steep risk to me.

That's one reason I favor Boeing over Airbus. Boeing's philosophy is for the computers to make as much information available to the pilot as possible, to minimize human error. Airbus prefers to give the autopilot as much authority as they can, because it won't make human errors. Airbus underestimates the ability of humans and computers alike to make errors.
