I went through a traumatic dental emergency that has left me feeling extremely fearful with a lot of difficulty looking at myself. Laughing gas helped me so much to forget what was going on. At first I did have a bad “dream” as it was just the incident replaying in my head while I was super sleepy from the gas. After I relaxed further it was the only way I got through my first of what may be quite a few visits to fix the trauma. I’m very grateful for it

I’ve used nitrous for about 15ish years, maybe a bit more. Without it, the numbing doesn’t work properly. My dentist said I might be so anxious the numbing isnt able to work properly, but I’m not sure about that science haha. I’m autistic, and I’ve recently learned that in your brain, where you process sound is directly over where you process pain. It makes sense why noise is so painful. My guess is the sound of the drill is just so high pitched that once it hit my tooth, it messed my brain up and I thought I was in pain when I wasn’t. At least from the drilling. My dentist is awesome. They turn the nitrous up, let me wear my headphones so I only hear what I want to hear, and I get sunglasses. My last appointment I think I actually fell asleep! Normally I remember the pressure from the poking and prodding after the drilling, but I remember absolutely nothing. Nitrous for the win!

Yesterday I had my first laughing gas experience. I was TRIPPING HARD. I was tingling all over, moved like I was SUPER out of balance. I was listening to Kids Bop, of course, I am a child, and I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ANIMATION. The way I was tripping made it seem like EVERYTHING WAS HUGE. The dentist's face looked unreal, and I was closing my eyes because of how relaxed I was. Don't be afraid of laughing gas. I honestly think you trip the hardest during your first experience. The procedure I was having was getting a cap on my tooth. Teeth Talk Girl, why do they take a plastic thing that has a powder mixed with water and put it in your mouth to get a mold of your teeth? I only got one cap, but they molded both top AND bottom.
@Fuzzysea6933 ай бұрын
They take a mould of both top and bottom so they can get an accurate bite for your cap. If the cap was too high you wouldn’t be able to close your mouth all the way; too low and you would have a gap between your top and bottom teeth.

I was given NO2 at my last visit to get a root canal, and I discovered at its highest setting combined with the lowest O2 setting (and my completely breathing as deep and as fast as I could because I was freaking out they were drilling a long time, but it didn’t hurt) is the perfect level to feel NOTHING. One moment I was with it, then I lost my sense of hearing except for what was going on right next to me. Music? Gone. Voices were muffled. Tunnel vision and it was getting narrower with every deep breath. Then I couldn’t feel my body at all, super muscle relaxation and my vision was wavy and focus severely diminishing. I realized I was about ready to lose consciousness (of which I didn’t care and actually enjoyed) then my hearing came back and I could start to hear the O2 sensor on my finger beeping. The dentist was calling my name and asking me questions, which slowly came into hearing focus as well. This happened twice during a 2 hour root canal. I can say I didn’t feel any pain at all and my anxiety was self made. The nitrous totally helped, but I will say do not hyperventilate…..it’ll be cool for a moment then you are off to another planet. lol

My experience with Nitrous Oxide is very different than what I have read from others. Mine was just complete amnesia. One moment they put the mask on me, the next moment we're done with the procedure. I was in disbelief when they were telling me they were done. It felt like I had jumped in time, but they told me I was fully alert the whole time and was even talking to them (which I had no memory of). One thing I am worried about is how agreeable you become under it. Like, what if the hygenist or dentists asks me a personal question I don't want to answer?
@L1ttlef0ot Жыл бұрын
If they are a respectable practice, the hygienist/dentist/other staff on premises won’t ask you particularly personal questions that aren’t directly related to your dental care. The most they are permitted to do is small talk (such as: “do you have any pets?” Or “how did work/school go today?” Etc.) They’re supposed to keep things on a professional level with you. If they don’t, immediately look into switching to a different provider if possible. (Source: I work in a dentist office, clerical and dental assisting). You can also have a friend or loved one come back into the exam room with you so they can recount anything that happened while you’re affected by nitrous, since you have a very unusual side effect.

Nitrous oxide does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy or take the edge off for me. I feel like I’m suffocating sometimes. Went to the dentist today for my final appointment for some dental work and felt my eyes roll back in my head as he was talking to me and like I was going under like when they put you under for some major surgery. I knew I was on my way to fainting and that was not the intended effect. I pulled the mask off my face half conscious out of instinct and he noticed something was wrong and had me put it on and began to pump full oxygen through the mask and I felt better.

I’m gonna get my wisdom teeth out by the end of the month. They don’t hurt but they have cavities in them and need to come out. I asked if they could supply me with laughing gas instead of knocking me out. I already had a dose of that when I had my root canal treatment. I hadn’t felt that way since I was a kid. Still aware of everything going on around me but didn’t care and felt so carefree. I’m not scared of the blood or pain. I’m scared of the overall experience I’m going to have.

I tried requesting Nitrous Oxide when I was about to have my wisdom teeth pulled and was promptly mocked for asking. They basically told me its for kids only and to suck it up or leave. So I opted to only have the 1 tooth that was in pain pulled that day. I'm going back for the last 3 at a different office soon(its been 6 years) and I'm worried ill get the same treatment if I ask, which sucks because this sounds perfect for me.

I feel ya with this. I'm afraid of pain, and I am also afraid of being mocked. I can't say for sure, but it may have happened to me when I was younger, asking for laughing gas at an appointment. Pretty messed up. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the surgeon provided both IV propofol and a nitrous mask. Also a demerol script for later, no questions asked. He was so kind. They had to dig the top two out, so that's prob why. Face swelled up like a chipmunk.

My mother said when a dentist tried to use laughing gas on me when I was about 11 years old, she said I stopped breathing and turned blue. She demanded that the dentist take the mask off me immediately. He then wanted her to sign a release form. She told him where to shove that. I'm going in for gum surgery tomorrow. I'm thinking about passing on the laughing gas because a hygienist said it doesn't work if you are highly anxious. I'm anxious about the laughing gas now because I stopped breathing when I was a kid. @sallyshort725510 ай бұрын
I’ve had it twice. The first time, I was in a comfortable haze right above sleep. I knew it could create a floating sensation. I thought that meant just floating slightly off the chair like in a rocking boat. Oh, no lol! I floated through walls and then a mile up the road and back before going 8 feet up in the air wondering how the tiny dental assistant could reach me way up there. Then I realized I never moved and went back to relaxing. She told me I was at the highest setting, so I made mental note. The second time I had it, I was relaxed but not in the hazy area. I asked for the highest setting, and then after a minute or two, I don’t remember anything till he was done. As far as I’m concerned, I was out 😴. I'm pretty sure my dentist knew it too because of the way he explained things afterwards like I had no idea what had happened. I’m normally terrified of sedation (horrible experience) although hazy relaxation isn’t bad, but I trust my dentist enough that it didn’t scare me when I was waking up and realizing I had more than expected.

Even when the procedure was over, I was still screaming and crying. A few years later, I was suggested by another dentist to receive laughing gas and it was a definite no. I have never had it since and still, 10 years later, look away at the medical practice that did this procedure. I have yet to be proven on myself that laughing gas can make me laugh.
