The dentist matters greatly. From my experience its always better to find an actual dental office, not one of those places that send flyers in the mail. Those places just want volume and even tried to rush numbing my wife before she got a filling. I lost it on those people lol. We're going back to our actual dentist now since we moved closer. When its harder to get appointments you know they are good. If you have a bad dentist you are better off skipping cleanings until you find a good dentist cause once they touch your mouth you'll keep having problems. And of course, keep coconut oil pulling!!!!

There is a retired dentist influencer who is advocating people not to floss and not to get teeth cleanings. Much of what she says is true but then she takes it too far with a one solution system for everyone to fix everything. I use a good floss each evening. Xylitol and changing my diet has made the biggest improvement. It's true that many dentist recommend unnecessary cleanings. I'd like to find a functional dentist but they are hard to find in most states.

My entire life I religiously got my teeth cleaned every six months except when Covid hit and then I didn’t go for three years and my teeth were totally fine so I think the twice a year cleaning is more about enriching the dental practice than patient need. For me, personally, with a history of no cavities or gum problems I think a check up every three years is probably sufficient and I don’t know that cleanings are ever needed if you take care of your teeth well. I mean after three years with no professional cleaning my teeth did not need a cleaning.
@runae73687 ай бұрын
Once a year is fine for me. I found out what was causing my teeth staining so now I can avoid that. Most people don't take care of their teeth but I agree it can be done to avoid tarter build up. Xylitol re-mineralized a tiny cavity I had so that is gone now too.

Also I think it hurts less at the dentist when they're using the ultrasonic scaler. Particularly if one is interdental cleaning at home (interdental brushes/flossing). The gums will be less inflamed, but also I think they just toughen up... maybe. Probably the same for the regular scaler, but I don't recall my dentist using a scaler for an extended period of time. Or at all. Just a bit of the exploratory hook one poking around for a bit beforehand... then after the ultrasonic scaler, then there's the electric toothbrush-like instrument. Will pay attention next time. Also never ONCE have I had my teeth flossed at a dentist. I don't know how normal that is. I googled it for 3 seconds just now, and it seems the flossing in this situation is apparently more just used as a way to check for missed tartar, which is interesting.

I will share my own experience. When I go to the dentist, it’s been over 20 years since I had a cavity. I have had different hygienists and was told “you don’t have plaque or tartar” and didn’t need scaling at all and was told my teeth were nice and white. I HAD a cavity in my wisdom tooth and felt it each time I drank something cold. The tooth REMINERALIZED and no longer see the brown hole in it and NO MORE PAIN even drinking cold beverages. I USED TO have sensitive teeth and the start of gingivitis 30 years ago. That reversed as my gums are a healthy pink and no bleeding whatsoever. Here is what I do at home … a one minute rinse with Closys ultra sensitive (flavorless). Then two minutes brushing with just plain Crest anti-cavity toothpaste. Then 30 seconds with the gold colored bottle of Listerine. Then a one minute rinse of ACT mint flavor. I do the entire routine once in the morning and again at night. I do not store my toothbrush in the bathroom (because of germs from the toilet). I have one toothbrush for the morning and another at night. This way each toothbrush has 24 hours to dry completely. I DO NOT floss and have EXCELLENT checkups.

Yes for a short time to heal some level 4 pockets I was using her system. Turned out I became allergic to the paste (it has a high abrasive RDA) with hives and mouth swelling. I use the Closys, Listerine and in place of ACT due to its teeth staining I use a fluoride rinse without the green dye and cetypyridinium chloride (CPC). The xylitol re-mineralized a small cavity I had too. Her idea of brushing the gums with a firm toothbrush was a disaster for me. I use a rubber gum massager now instead. Eating better and being aware of what causes plaque and gum disease is important. I too have improvement and don't need the deep cleaning that was recommended to me initially.

And what about consistently like every three months removing all the protective bio film which a dental cleaning does? Some dentists find this detrimental to oral health. You’re probably going to say it’s greedy dentists who just don’t want to pay hygienists, but maybe hygienists are not needed. I think the more recent science is starting to bear this out.

Exactly. One time the dentist I went to did something that wasn't covered by my dental insurance and everything that's done to my teeth, I expect it to be covered by my insurance. So then at the end of the appointment, they told me, "Ok, so out of all the cleanings we did today, there was one that wasn't covered by your insurance which cost $30." ME: "What? If something is not covered by my insurance, then you need to inform me 1st before you proceed with anything. You can't just do whatever you want to my teeth that's not covered by my insurance and expect me to pay for it. Show me the proof. Now give me a pen/paper to write down the name of this so that I can report it to my dental insurance and see if it truly isn't covered." Dentist: "O, we can't do that, it's private dental information. See it says right here on this paper that it's not covered" ME: "WTF are you talking about? It's MY Personal Dental Information and I don't care what it says on a piece of paper as anything can be put on there indicating that it's not covered. By you telling me this, you're indicating to me that it IS covered and therefore you know you will be in BIG trouble if I report this to my insurance. So I'll pay this one time, but the next time you do anything that's not covered by my insurance, then I won't be paying"

@shyrahgail7 ай бұрын
Well, it’s not harmful to your enamel if the cleaning is done by a professional. also the polish used is a fine abrasive that is designed to remove surface stains from the teeth, it is not abrasive enough to remove or damage the enamel when used correctly. got these from a dental chatbot called kriss ai LOL
