I feel like deep cleaning should be covered as preventative care at 100% along with crowns.
@AshSC17
@AshSC17 2 жыл бұрын
A deep cleaning is not preventative care - disease process (periodontitis) has already occurred that needs to be stopped with Scaling & Root Planing (SRP). It is NOT gingivitis. A preventative cleaning (Prophylaxis) has 1-4mm pockets, no bone loss. Also dental providers do not make the rules with dental insurance; you or your HR department does. The more expensive procedures require more extensive care due to disease progression. This applies to all things health care.

Had my first deep cleaning today and it was absolutely painless. My dentist even me several times to raise my hand if I need a short break.. but there’s literally no pain. Turning 27 this year and had no bone loss which I was most worried about. But everyone - stay on top of your teeth! Just after the one side getting done, the difference feels night and day.

@@daniella8400hello there, that might be true now but it wasn’t when I was at an age where dental care was essential! The equal care act wasn’t established in my state until 2012 (I was 9), and even then there were still things the insurance foster care offered didn’t cover until I was much older; they’ve added more to that act and now anyone who has that insurance (or plain state coverage) can receive the care they need without having to worry about affordability. @@ghostlyghoulie dental care is essential once you start growing teeth. Again, children in custody get full medical care for any and everything even braces if needed. @@daniella8400 you must not have read my initial comment. ‘I didn’t have dental insurance UNTIL I got it through FOSTER CARE’. I never said i didn’t receive any care quite the opposite actually; I had foster insurance through foster adoption up until I turned 21- I know how it works, and I’ve read the addendums. I was well cared for, so if you have a problem (Because I don’t) you should take it up with the government for not covering necessary medical care sooner. Also; I said ‘foster care insurance’ because that’s what I had through foster adoption even though I was placed with family so I never got medicaid I got medical in 2010 when pediatric dental coverage was included in the equal care act.

I was definitely sore for a few days, but I also had some pretty significant buildup above the gumline (thanks depression!) and they had to clean my mouth in four sessions. Most people probably won't be that bad. They also did laser treatment on my gums when they were finished to make sure all the bacteria was gone, which was just a little tickly/itchy.

I'm still wondering about why I see the pressurized spray used with biofilm dye on ppl with severe build-up but I have yet to find a dentist that will use it. Maybe it's more $$for them to subject patients to the scraping and needles, but seems a little antiquated. If something can be done more efficiently & still as effectively (or better) why not? Just sad it seems more about the $$than the patient's overall health (including mental). It's like it's not acknowledged that better methods exist and since we're lay people we'll just take what's given without question.😔

@ignightroad
@ignightroad Жыл бұрын
Have had this done several times, my most recent being yesterday (and another in two weeks). If you get the numbing gel you WILL feel it on the problem teeth, where gums are inflammed or big pockets. However, for half the mouth it takes about an hour and other than the drill sound of the water spray, there's really no pain. There might be some uncomfortable feelings from the scraping pick but it's nothing. Your teeth MAY be wiggly for a few days so be sure to stick to soft food diets on that side while it heals. procedure sounds scary but it's really no big deal, I promise. Take deep breaths and give your dentist a signal if you need a break. Try and relax with some music.

I had a deep cleaning done on Friday and they didn’t do a lot of the things you mentioned. I think my dentist needs to watch your video lol. First, it was supposed to be a periodontal cleaning and then she said you're bleeding too much, you need a deep cleaning. So they decided to change it. I didn’t get my gums measured or anything. She just look at my file and said that I haven't had a deep cleaning in two years and I was do for one. Then they didn't want to use anesthesia even after I ask. The person doing it said that he was very gentle and it wasn't going to hurt, but if it started hurting then he'll use it. And of course, the moment he poke me it hurt. So he end it up using anesthesia in my whole mouth. I had it done in both sides. My mouth was numb for about 3 hours and since it was early I didn’t have breakfast 🥲 after the procedure was done I didn’t get a polished nor did I get an appointment for it. It wasn't offered. I wasn't measured after either. I was just told to come back in 3 months for a clean up. I asked if I could use the waterpik and he said yes. So later at night whe I used it, I was bleeding like crazy. So I used salt water after. But I wasn't given instructions of what to do after, I had to ask.

They should have def measured your gums but as far as polishing, polishing is not recommended to be done after a deep cleaning as the pumice can get underneath the gums and cause more inflammation. If your gum health improves by your 3 month periodontal maintenance, then they can polish then.

There was a time, depending on dental office, the hygienist would include scaling as part of general routine exam. Scaling as part of routine cleaning should prevent ever having to need a deep clean. In all my 60 years, I have never been told that I need a deep clean, until I moved to Houston. Unless you just want a deep clean, I say get a second opinion before dishing out hundreds of dollars.

When she looked in my mouth I got the impression that she wasn't really seeing much. Seemed like a pretty standard cleaning to me, in fact not the most thorough I have ever had. I was out of the chair in less than 30 minutes, including cleaning of my upper teeth and polishing of all teeth. I expressed my confusion and concern about what treatment I actually needed and that I was being overcharged, $260 for a "deep cleaning".

The only part you got wrong is bone can be regrown by a periodontist. How they do it is they draw blood and separate it in a machine and then they put it into the bone and regrow the bone around the teeth to make it strong again. I can’t remember exactly how it’s done but it’s something along those lines. The pockets will heal up once the bone is restored.

This is why a lot of us fear going to the dentist as adults because we had painful experiences as children. Last year I broke a tooth and had to have an emergency root canal and crown implanted. The dentist made me feel safe and he numbed me up. I didn’t feel a thing. I’ve been going back to that office regularly for the past year. I’m finally getting me teeth together. Thankfully, they weren’t too messed up but I’m going in for a deep cleaning in a week because prior to breaking that tooth, I hadn’t been to a dentist in over a decade. Some of it was fear and some of it was the financial strain but I can definitely say doing preventive/maintenance work is much cheaper than having to replace a tooth for $1000 which is what I paid out of pocket for root canal and crown AFTER insurance.

@@ariesspring2161 I have no idea. I'm no expert on these things. All I have are questions. Here's what I suspect : the calculus removal which gave way to newly formed small pockets and bit of bone loss (just the tip of bone, due to periodontitis, not the deep cleaning) made way for my teeth to shift out of place even slightly. That slight shift messed with my bite, and I can't get braces now because I have to tend to my gums so much.
